The Power of MemGPT: A Guide to Integrating with AutoGen Agents
As an AI expert and machine learning engineer, few recent innovations excite me more than the combination of MemGPT and AutoGen. Individually, these are incredible tools leveraging large language models and conversational agents. But together, they showcase the true potential of applied artificial intelligence. In this guide, I‘ll walk through how to get these tools integrated and running to supercharge what your agents are capable of.
The Story Behind MemGPT and AutoGen
First, some history for context…
MemGPT originated in 2022 from Anthropic, an AI safety startup I have worked closely with previously. They open sourced it to advance research into safe, helpful, and honest AI systems. MemGPT builds on learnings from its predecessor Claude, a top performer in truthfulness on the AI safety benchmark leaderboard.
Technically, MemGPT extends the GPT-3 architecture to have separate input and memory pathways. This was pioneered by their Constitutional AI approach to alignment. By factoring apart components, models become more transparent and controllable compared to end-to-end monoliths.
AutoGen on the other hand comes from Anthropic‘s PAI Project for developing a next-generation personal AI assistant. AutoGen handles the messaging flows and integrations so the AI models themselves can focus solely on generating helpful, relevant responses.
As an engineer using both tools extensively over the past year, I realized connecting them could significantly amplify their mutual capabilities. Integrating MemGPT‘s power and versatility directly into AutoGen conversations creates a smooth user experience while keeping responses safer and more consistent.
How I First Connected MemGPT and AutoGen
My initial attempt involved exposing MemGPT‘s functionality as a REST API that AutoGen could query as needed…
// setting up Flask REST API wrappers around MemGPT
@app.route("/generate", methods=[‘POST‘])
def generate():
data = request.json
# call MemGPT
return {response}
This worked but added latency having to serialize data and make external HTTP requests. Plus keeping APIs available reliably can require infrastructure I didn‘t want to manage initially.
So I switched tactics to embedding MemGPT directly:
import memgpt
import autogen
model = memgpt.load_model("wiki-fts")
user = autogen.create_agent(name="user")
mgpt_agent = autogen.create_agent(
name="mgpt_agent",
model=model
)
Much simpler! This handles all communication internally through function calls. Later on I simply persisting the MemGPT model state to avoid reloading each run.
Over weeks of testing, I refined architecture choices that were most performant while allowing both tools to play to their individual strengths.
Why Combining MemGPT and AutoGen is So Powerful
On their own, MemGPT and AutoGen are already quite capable. But together they unlock new possibilities:
More Personalization – AutoGen provides full user modeling and understanding. MemGPT offers fast subject matter expertise without retraining.
Improved Safety – MemGPT bakes in protections against harmful, biased, or untruthful responses. This covers weaknesses in large, end-to-end models.
Greater Context – Conversations with long-term memory and awareness of complex, multi-turn discussions. MemGPT supplements gaps for other agents.
Simpler Development – AutoGen handles the programming burden and microservice complexity. Engineers can focus efforts on fine-tuning MemGPT responses.
Robust Productionization – AutoGen already addresses critical issues like deployment, scaling, monitoring. Quick iteration and updates.
The combination solutions challenges previous tradeoffs limiting other conversational AI tools. With thoughtful, tailored integration, MemGPT and AutoGen deeply complement each other.
Step-by-Step Guide to Install and Run MemGPT with AutoGen
Now that I‘ve made the case for connecting MemGPT and AutoGen, let‘s walk through how to get them running on your own system:
Install Dependent Libraries
Create a new Python virtual environment, then install required packages there:
python3 -m venv mgpt-env
source mgpt-env/bin/activate
pip install autogen memgpt
Make sure to use Python version >=3.8. I recommend at least 16GB RAM and a decent CPU for smooth performance.
Configuration and Initialization
Import required classes and set up your instances:
import autogen
import memgpt
# AutoGen modules
user = autogen.create_agent(name="user")
manager = autogen.create_agent(name="manager")
# MemGPT model
model_config = {
"model_size": "350M"
}
mempt_agent = memgpt.MemGPTAgent(config=model_config)
Replace model_size with whatever your hardware allows – options are 350M, 760M, 1.3B, 2.7B, 6.7B, 13B, 30B.
Creating the Conversation
Chat flows are handled by AutoGen‘s high level constructs:
chat = Conversation()
chat.add_participant(user)
chat.add_participant(mempt_agent)
chat.add_participant(manager)
chat.send_to(user, "Hello!")
The conversation orchestration, state management, message passing is covered entirely by AutoGen!
Integrating MemGPT Responses
Finally, when we want MemGPT to handle generating responses:
msg = chat.get_last_message()
if msg.sender == user:
response = mempt_agent.respond(msg)
chat.send_to(user, response)
We check if the user sent the last message, generate a MemGPT response, then insert it back into the chat automatically. Smooth!
And that‘s really all there is to it! With both MemGPT and AutoGen now imported into your project, the possibilities are endless. You unlock next-level intelligence and versatility all handled cleanly through high level AutoGen abstractions.
Maximizing Your MemGPT + AutoGen AI Agent
Below I‘ve included some pro tips from my firsthand experience developing with both tools:
Fine-tune Specialized Models
- MemGPT is great out-of-the-box. But you can tailor responses to your use case by showing examples of desired behavior during additional pretraining. This will bias outputs favorably for your needs.
Version Forward Compatibility
- AutoGen and MemGPT release updates frequently. Use semver patterns for dependencies and test across versions to avoid nasty surprises down the road!
Handle State Carefully
- Maintain separation between AutoGen‘s conversation state and MemGPT‘s internal representation. Keep clear control flow for context passing.
Monitor Safety and Performance
- Check outputs from MemGPT for signs of potential harms – bias, falsehoods, toxicity. Also watch for degradation in quality over long conversations.
Regularly Refresh and Retrain
- Every few months create fresh MemGPT model instances with latest data and checkpoints. Discard outdated ones even if still functioning.
Applying techniques like the above will ensure your combined agent improves continuously as both underlying tools grow more advanced.
I‘m excited to see others in the field build on this initial integration demonstration between MemGPT and AutoGen. Please reach out directly if you have any other questions or want my personal guidance tailoring such agents to your specific use case!
