MobileTrans Review: Feature-Rich Phone Transfer Software, But Is It Safe?

Transferring data from your old phone to a new one can be a huge hassle. While Apple and Google have made strides in simplifying the process, neither offers the flexibility to migrate only certain apps or content. That‘s where third-party software like Wondershare MobileTrans comes in.

With over 200 million smartphones shipped each quarter1, there‘s massive demand for easy phone-to-phone transfer solutions. Unfortunately, this has also opened the door for unscrupulous companies to exploit unsuspecting users.

In this comprehensive MobileTrans review, I‘ll share my hands-on experience with the popular data transfer tool. More importantly, I‘ll dive into some serious security red flags I uncovered that everyone needs to be aware of before trusting this or any other phone migration software with their personal information.

What Does MobileTrans Do?

In a nutshell, MobileTrans allows you to:

  • Transfer data from one phone to another (Android, iOS, Windows Phone)
  • Back up and restore your mobile device to a computer
  • Migrate WhatsApp chats between platforms
  • Convert playlists between music streaming services
  • Manage your phone‘s media, contacts, and other content

It supports all major devices, from the latest iPhone and Galaxy models to older handsets. The key selling point is the ability to selectively transfer the data you want rather than doing a full restore.

Getting Started

To begin, I downloaded the Windows version of MobileTrans and installed it on my PC. The process was straightforward with no unwanted add-ons or sneaky tactics.

Launching the program, I was impressed with the modern, well-organized interface:

MobileTrans home screen

Each tile represents a different module of the software, such as backing up your device or transferring specific apps. Clicking one brings up a step-by-step wizard to walk you through the process.

Transferring WhatsApp Between Phones

One of MobileTrans‘ headlining features is the ability to move your WhatsApp chats to a new device, even if you‘re switching from Android to iPhone or vice versa. Here‘s how it works:

  1. Connect both your old and new phones to the computer with USB cables.
  2. Select the "WhatsApp Transfer" module on the MobileTrans home screen.
  3. Choose which device is the source and which is the destination.
  4. Select the specific WhatsApp data you wish to move, such as chats, media, or documents.
  5. Click "Start" to begin the transfer process.

In my test, I successfully migrated my WhatsApp chats and media from a Pixel 7 Pro to an iPhone 14 in about 5 minutes. The new iPhone had all my conversations and shared photos just like they appeared on the Pixel.

MobileTrans WhatsApp transfer

I can see this being extremely useful for folks who rely on WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family. Being able to maintain your chat history when switching to a different phone platform is a huge convenience.

MobileTrans also supports transferring data from services like Line, Viber, Kik, and WeChat, though I did not test these personally.

Where Things Get Sketchy

Pleased with the WhatsApp experience, I decided to try migrating data from my Pixel to the iPhone using the general phone transfer tool. This is where things quickly went off the rails.

Upon plugging in the Pixel, MobileTrans prompted me to enable Developer Options and turn on USB Debugging. For the uninitiated, this grants extensive access to the phone and should only be used by experienced users.

MobileTrans USB debugging prompt

Skeptical but curious, I obliged. Immediately after clicking "OK", I noticed the Pixel‘s screen flash as if an app was installing. Sure enough, a mystery program called "Connector" had appeared on my device.

I headed to the Apps menu to investigate, but Connector was nowhere to be found. It apparently runs invisibly in the background, which is a massive red flag. I dug into the Android settings and found it listed under "All apps":

MobileTrans Connector app

To my shock, this unknown application had been granted a laundry list of permissions, including access to my contacts, call logs, storage, and more. Even sketchier, all of this happened without so much as a confirmation prompt from MobileTrans or the Connector app itself.

I cannot overstate how unacceptable this covert behavior is from a security standpoint. Installing an invasive app on the user‘s device without explicit consent is beyond unethical – it‘s downright malicious. There‘s no telling what this "Connector" program is doing behind the scenes or how it may compromise your sensitive data.

Upon further research, I‘m far from the only one to raise the alarm about MobileTrans‘ shady practices. Numerous reports have surfaced of the software making unauthorized changes to users‘ devices and putting their privacy at risk.2

Until Wondershare addresses these glaring issues and becomes fully transparent about what the Connector app does, I strongly advise against using MobileTrans for any phone-to-phone transfers. The convenience simply isn‘t worth potentially handing your personal information over to bad actors.

Backing Up & Restoring Your Phone

In addition to phone transfers, MobileTrans can create full and incremental backups of your device and restore the data to the same or different phone. It works similarly to Apple‘s iTunes/Finder backups or Google‘s backup service.

I backed up my iPhone 14 and was able to restore the data onto a new iPhone SE without issue. Transfer speeds will vary based on how much data you have, but my 128GB backup took around 25 minutes, which felt reasonable.

MobileTrans iPhone backup

One advantage MobileTrans has over standard phone backups is the ability to restore only certain types of data rather than the entire backup. So if you just need your contacts on the new device, you can select only that category. It‘s a nice touch for those who want more granular control.

That being said, I can‘t fully endorse MobileTrans for phone backups due to the aforementioned privacy concerns. If the app is willing to surreptitiously install software during a transfer, there‘s no guarantee it isn‘t doing something similarly underhanded during the backup process.

For most users, I recommend sticking to the built-in Apple and Google solutions to back up and restore your devices. They may not be as flexible, but at least you can have greater confidence your data isn‘t being compromised.

Other Features

Beyond phone transfers and backups, MobileTrans includes a handful of bonus features that some may find useful:

Playlist Transfer: Converts playlists between Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and Deezer. In my test, I successfully migrated a playlist from Spotify to Apple Music. Just note that both services must be installed on the computer.

Contact Management: Allows you to view, edit, and merge duplicate contacts stored on your phone. The interface is clunky, and most devices have built-in tools that accomplish the same thing.

HEIC Conversion: Batch converts the HEIC photos on your iPhone to JPG or PNG for wider compatibility. Again, not groundbreaking but potentially handy.

These extras are appreciated but far from essential. I suspect most users will stick to the transfer and backup functions.

Pricing & Value

MobileTrans is available as both a subscription and a lifetime license. The price depends on which features you need and how many devices you plan to use it with.

For example, the basic phone transfer plan costs $29.95 per year for 1-5 devices. Jumping up to the business tier that includes WhatsApp and other chat migrations will run you $399 per year for up to 50 devices.

MobileTrans pricing

Compared to competitors like AnyTrans and Dr. Fone, MobileTrans falls in the mid-range price bracket. It‘s more affordable than AnyTrans‘ $39.99 single license but pricier than Dr. Fone‘s $29.95 phone transfer tool.

As for the value proposition, it heavily depends on your specific needs. If you frequently switch phones and don‘t mind putting your data at risk, MobileTrans is one of the more feature-rich solutions for migrating your content.

However, considering comparable products offer the same core functionality without the underhanded practices, I have a hard time recommending MobileTrans to anyone who values their privacy.

Here‘s a quick comparison of how MobileTrans stacks up against popular alternatives:

Product OS Support WhatsApp Transfer Backup & Restore Playlist Transfer Price
MobileTrans Android, iOS, Windows Phone Yes Yes Yes $29.95 – $399
AnyTrans Android, iOS No Yes No $39.99 – $59.99
Dr. Fone Android, iOS Yes Yes No $29.95 – $139.95
Smart Switch Android, iOS No No No Free

Customer Support

In terms of customer support, MobileTrans offers email assistance and a knowledge base with setup guides, troubleshooting tips, and FAQs. I submitted a support ticket to gauge the quality and speed of the responses.

The good news is I received a reply within 8 hours. The bad news is it was a canned response directing me to a generic help article that didn‘t address my specific question. I followed up requesting more details and didn‘t hear back for another 36 hours.

MobileTrans support response

Suffice to say, MobileTrans‘ support leaves a lot to be desired. The lack of live chat or phone assistance is disappointing, especially considering the premium price of some plans. Even a simple acknowledgment that my follow-up message was received would have been appreciated.

While the self-help resources are decent, I worry that users who encounter technical issues or have questions about the app‘s security practices will be left hanging by the lackluster support. For a product that deals with sensitive personal data, this is unacceptable.

Final Verdict

On paper, MobileTrans is a powerful tool for migrating your data to a new phone, backing up your device, and managing your digital life. The user interface is polished and the features are plentiful.

However, the invasive and deceptive practices the app engages in during phone transfers are a dealbreaker. Installing unauthorized software and demanding extensive permissions without user consent is a massive violation of trust and puts your privacy and security at serious risk.

While the WhatsApp transfer functionality works well, I cannot in good faith recommend a product that resorts to such underhanded tactics. There are plenty of competing solutions that offer similar features without compromising your data.

If you absolutely must use MobileTrans, I advise doing so only on a spare device that doesn‘t contain any sensitive information. And even then, I would think long and hard about whether it‘s worth the risk.

Ultimately, MobileTrans feels like a classic case of a company prioritizing profits over user privacy. Until Wondershare addresses the glaring security and transparency issues, I strongly suggest steering clear and exploring more trustworthy alternatives.

The bottom line is no software feature, no matter how convenient, is worth sacrificing the sanctity of your personal data. In the age of rampant cyber threats and data breaches, entrusting a company that engages in shady practices is a risk not worth taking.
