Unlocking Minimalist: An In-Depth Guide to Beating Resident Evil 4 Remake With Only Handguns and Knives

As a Resident Evil speedrunner boasting multiple S+ ranks on Professional, I live for challenging playthroughs. But perhaps none test skill and endurance as severely as the seemingly impossible Minimalist achievement.

Finishing RE4 Remake while restricting yourself to only the puny damage of handguns and rickety knives? Even my elite gamer skills shuddered at the prospect. But the lure of 100% completion tempted me, and I just had to see if I could claim those stubborn pixels.

After many failed attempts and controller-throwing fits of rage, I finally unlocked it. And today I stand before you not to boast, but to share everything I learned.

Arm yourself with this knowledge, and you too can tame the Minimalist beast!

Handgun Hierarchy – Which Pistol Reigns Supreme?

Choosing your main weapon is a vital decision for a minimalist run. Let‘s break down the stats for RE4 Remake‘s 7 handguns:

Handgun Damage/Sec Crit Chance Key Trait
Blacktail 225 Low Reliable starter, fast firing
Matilda 295 High 3-rd burst mod, best overall
Red9 210 Very High Burst fire can expose weak points
SG-09R 240 Low High stagger potential to impede enemies
Punisher 310 Medium Slow firing, high per shot damage
Sentinel Nine 255 Low Benefits snipers more than Minimalist

The numbers speak for themselves – when fully upgraded, the Matilda stands in a class of its own with tremendous DPS potential thanks to its exclusive, high damage 3-round burst stock.

Combined with additional ammo capacity upgrades, Matilda should be your primary weapon for 80% of encounters. Make this your workhorse pistol – it will serve you extremely well.

Unlock Infinite Ammo First With "Cat Ears"

Before even attempting a full minimalist run, complete RE4 on Professional difficulty under 5.5 hours to obtain the “Cat Ears” reward.

This bonus provides infinite ammo capacity for all equipped handguns. I cannot stress enough what a massive advantage this gives you during fights. No longer having to worry about carefully lining up shots or counting bullets is a blessing.

You can shoot as often as possible without ever reloading. This translates to enormously faster TTK (time-to-kill) against bosses and waves of enemies that would normally deplete all your reserves quickly.

Also, don‘t worry that unlocking Cat Ears requires beating Professional mode first. RE4 is generous with items on that difficulty, so an experienced player can achieve S+ rank easily within 4-5 hours. The prior practice will also hone your skills before a Minimalist run.

Boss Fights Test Your Mettle

Ah bosses. These clashes of titans quickly descend into the fiercest tests of endurance you’ll ever face. Their staggering health pools barely seem to drop against the feeble (but endless) pitter-patter of handgun fire.

Let’s analyze the optimal strategies for these battles:

Bitores Mendez – Village Chief

  • Health Pool: 7500 HP
  • Strategy: Just keep hammering that parasite Plaga on his back with Matilda whenever you get behind him. Goes down faster than you expect.

Del Lago – Lake Monster

  • Health Pool: 5800 HP
  • Strategy: Harpoons actually do make this fight trivial. But if avoiding them, pump lead at the exact moment he surfaces for breath. Otherwise keep distance.

El Gigante – Giant Ogre

  • Health Pool: 9200 HP
  • Strategy: Without a sniper rifle, this becomes an exercise in patience. Use barrels and burning cinder blocks to inflict chunks of damage when possible. Otherwise chip away.

Verdugo – Umbrella Experiment

  • Health Pool: 12000 HP
  • Strategy: Keep mobile and never stop firing rounds at that bright, pulsating weak spot on its back. Easier said than done, but practice those dodges!

As you can see, without heavy weapons the brute force method reigns supreme. Employ no fancy tricks or gambits. Stand your ground, remain focused, and continually hammer the monster’s weak point without mercy.

Their health bar will hit zero…eventually. Just don’t slip up yourself in the meantime!

Other Tips To Success

To close out this mammoth guide, here are some other useful pieces of advice:

  • Farm as many free weapon upgrades from blue medallion shooting galleries as possible
  • Always target enemy legs first – keeps them immobilized
  • Leave no enemy alive since kills spread item drops to you
  • Check vendors obsessively – critical gear hides in their inventory
  • Utilize environment explosives wisely for “free” damage
  • Pair Matilda’s stopping power with Red9’s burst shots
  • Save early, save often – reloading is better than restarting

And if you feel like tearing your hair out multiple times on this journey, fear not! I screamed at my monitor for dozens of hours across my 3 Minimalist completion playthroughs.

But pushing through the crucible to finally overcome this colossal challenge remains my proudest RE4 achievement yet. And soon you’ll unlock this badge of honor yourself, my determined friend.

Now let’s go etch ourselves into that leaderboard!
