Should You Buy Luna Now in 2026? I Don‘t Recommend It
In my opinion as a cryptocurrency analyst, Luna is still far too risky to buy now after its spectacular crash in 2022. While prices are discounted, Terra needs to prove its rebranded ecosystem is stable and viable before most investors should consider Luna again. 2023 will be a pivotal year for LUNA to potentially start rebuilding trust – but the odds look long. Here‘s my in-depth analysis on Terra‘s outlook.
What Caused Luna‘s Downfall in 2022
Luna was designed to maintain the 1:1 dollar peg of TerraUSD (UST), the algorithmic stablecoin issued on Terra. It did this by expanding and contracting LUNA‘s circulating supply based on UST demand via minting and burning.
But when a massive "bank run" occurred on UST in May 2022, things spiralled out of control. As panicked UST holders dumped their tokens below $1, the system minted billions more LUNA tokens in a futile attempt to repeg UST‘s price.
UST‘s Circulating Supply During Depeg
| Date | Circulating Supply |
|---|---|
| May 7 | $18.6 billion |
| May 10 | $16.5 billion |
| May 11 | $13.8 billion |
| May 12 | $6.9 billion |

This exponentially increased LUNA‘s supply from only 350 million tokens to over 6.5 trillion in a matter of days, causing its price to crater from over $80 to practically zero.

Billions in value held by institutions and retail investors evaporated in one of crypto‘s most sudden crashes ever. The fallout also took down major crypto firms like Three Arrows Capital who held now-worthless LUNA.
This failure of Terra‘s stability mechanism was a stark warning about the risks of algorithmic stablecoins. It shattered faith in the project and stablecoins broadly across crypto markets.
Can Terra Recover After Breaking Trust So Badly?
Terraform Labs and its founder Do Kwon rebranded LUNA as Terra Classic (LUNC) and launched a new Terra chain with LUNA tokens in May 2022.
The new LUNA token airdropped to old users briefly rallied back over $30. However, it has trended down to trade under $2 now – not even close to its former ~$100 highs.
Terra is trying to rebuild its ecosystem and UST stablecoin on the revived network. But many developers and institutional partners abandoned the project after losing big on its crash.
Kwon also faces ongoing legal investigations in South Korea and elsewhere. Class action lawsuits by investors accuse him and Terraform of fraud over the failed repegging. These distractions make executing Terra‘s rehabilitation even harder.
Plus, faith in algorithmic stablecoins broadly is badly shaken. Even if UST regains its 1:1 dollar peg, many users likely won‘t trust it enough to return. Better-collateralized alternatives like USDC now dominate stablecoin rankings while UST has faded.
Stablecoin Market Capitalizations
| Rank | Asset | Market Cap |
|---|---|---|
| #1 | USDT (Tether) | $66.5 billion |
| #2 | USDC (USD Coin) | $44.5 billion |
| #10 | UST (TerraUSD) | $326 million |

So in summary, Terra faces immense challenges to rebuild given:
- Loss of community trust and developer/institutional support
- Reputational damage from UST‘s failed repegging
- Distractions of lawsuits and legal investigations
- Users shifting to better-backed stablecoins
Without a vibrant ecosystem of DeFi apps, stablecoin usage, and staking activity like before, LUNA seems unlikely to revisit triple-digit prices anytime soon.
What Could Rekindle Interest in Luna in 2024?
Terra isn‘t dead yet though. Here are some potential catalysts that could reignite interest in LUNA during 2023 if they materialize:
1. UST Regains Its Peg and Adoption
This is the single most important driver for LUNA. If the UST stablecoin can demonstrably hold its 1:1 dollar peg again long-term, and grow usage back towards its former $18 billion+ market cap, it would require LUNA to be burned supporting that expansion.
Even getting halfway back to UST‘s old supply would likely propel LUNA prices much higher from current lows. It would restore credibility to some degree in the stability mechanism.
2. Launch of Collateralized UST
Kwon has hinted at plans to introduce some level of collateral reserves to algorithmically control UST‘s minting/burning. This hybrid model could prevent the hyperinflationary "death spiral" by having real asset backing like USDC.
If executed sucessfully, collateralized UST could attract back more conservative institutional stablecoin users uneasy about purely algorithmic coins. This would benefit LUNA too.
3. Renewed Crypto and NFT Demand in 2024
LUNA would obviously rise with the broader crypto market if macro conditions improve. Factors like a mild economic recession and subsiding inflation could prompt renewed bullish betting on digital assets in late 2023.
Plus, gaming/metaverse tokens like LUNA could get a further boost if the NFT market sees a resurgence. For now NFT sales volumes remain depressed post-crash. But recovery would bring speculators back to cryptos like LUNA with gaming utility.
4. LUNA Benefits as a DAO Governance Token
More decentralized governance could strengthen LUNA‘s investment case. If power shifts away from Kwon and Terraform to community stakeholders through a DAO, LUNA may start being valued more as a Web3 governance token.
Most other top DeFi governance tokens like UNI and AAVE held up far better than LUNA in the crypto downturn. Clarifying LUNA‘s utility as a governance token could make its valuation less dependent on UST.
5. Technical Rebound Off Capitulation Lows
Markets tend to overreact during panics as weak hands capitulate, creating potential mispricings on the low side. LUNA now trades nearly 99% below its all-time high – it may have overshot to the downside excessively.
This could prompt a technical rebound at some point as bargain hunters buy LUNA off its capitulation lows. Of course, sustained upside would require reconsidering LUNA‘s fundamental valuation too. But extreme pessimism often sets up short-term countertrend rallies.
However, all this upside potential currently appears discounted by ongoing distrust in Terra. Until tangible progress emerges on factors like UST adoption or legal developments, LUNA seems likely to continue languishing under $5.
What Downside Risks Could Further Pressure Luna?
Luna faces powerful headwinds that could result in even lower prices if its attempted turnaround stalls out. Here are the major downside risks to monitor with LUNA:
1. Protracted Bear Market Across Crypto
LUNA would likely retest its lows around 10 cents again if the broader crypto downturn drags on. Disappointing macroeconomic data or events prolonging the "crypto winter" would hurt speculative assets like LUNA most.
There are signs the bear market could run into 2024 as central banks keep hiking rates. That would stifle the risk-on sentiment needed for a LUNA recovery.
2. Developers Continue Abandoning Terra
Loss of developer talent to competing blockchains would be a huge blow. Platforms like Solana and Avalanche seem poised to benefit from Terra‘s developer diaspora.
Without enoughcoders/entrepreneurs building new DeFi apps on Terra, LUNA loses a key use case as the network‘s gas token. User activity and demand to hold LUNA may keep declining if Terra isn‘t reinvigorated with fresh projects.
3. Ongoing Sell Pressure from Angry Investors
Many LUNA investors suffered huge losses as the token crashed from triple-digit prices to nearly zero. Understandably, they want nothing to do with Terra any longer after losing big on its failure.
This creates persistent selling pressure hanging over LUNA from disgruntled former token holders. Until their negative sentiment shifts, rally attempts face strong resistance.
4. Class Action Lawsuits Succeed
If any of the lawsuits brought by LUNA investors prevail, it could be very damaging for Terra‘s hopes of rebuilding. Major fraud verdicts or charges against Do Kwon would likely crush community and investor confidence for years.
At best, the legal actions create unwelcome distractions. At worst, they impose financial penalties and cast blame that permanently stains LUNA‘s reputation in investors‘ eyes.
5. UST Adoption Keeps Shrinking
The nightmare scenario is UST failing to regain its former peg and users, pushing its market cap lower. This existential threat would remove the primary utility for LUNA‘s existence.
If developers and institutions opt for alternatives like USDC that cement their lead over UST, LUNA could slowly fade into obscurity. Without upside catalysts like stablecoin demand, its price outlook looks bleak.
In my view as a market analyst, the downside risks decisively outweigh potential bullish catalysts currently. Until that changes, I suggest avoiding LUNA or waiting for much lower entry prices under $1.
Terra Luna Price Predictions for 2024
How down or up could LUNA go next year according to expert forecasts? Here‘s a summary of 2024 Luna price predictions:
| Forecast | 2023 Price Prediction |
|---|---|
| TradingBeasts | $2.36 average, $2.17-$2.51 range |
| WalletInvestor | $3-5 by Dec. 2023 |
| PricePrediction.net | $15 by Dec. 2023 |
| CoinPriceForecast | $5 by Dec. 2023 |
The most bullish outlooks see LUNA potentially retesting its initial relaunch range of $15-30 next year. But even the highest prediction of $15 would only represent a 500% gain from around $3 currently.
More conservative analysts expect LUNA to end 2023 between $2-5 – only a double or triple from today‘s prices. Reaching triple digits again seems highly improbable barring an unexpected miracle turnaround.
In my view, LUNA returning to its former peak above $100 should be treated as impossible after its reputational damage. Traders looking to profit from upside should consider taking partial profits between $10-20 if LUNA manages to rally that high.
Better Crypto Investments Than Terra for 2024
Rather than betting on a LUNA rebound, I recommend considering alternative cryptos with stronger fundamentals:
Ethereum (ETH)
The second largest blockchain is scaling through its Merge to proof-of-stake. This could provide a bull catalyst in 2024. ETH also powers most NFT/DeFi activity, giving it far broader utility than LUNA currently.
Solana (SOL)
As a fast Layer 1 blockchain rivaling Ethereum in speed/fees, Solana seems well-positioned to siphon developers from Terra. Its ecosystem is rapidly expanding with over 400 projects built on SOL.
Polygon (MATIC)
MATIC helps scale Ethereum through rollups while offering a wide array of DeFi/gaming apps on its sidechain. Its dual token model avoids the flaws exposed in LUNA‘s design.
Metacade (MCADE)
This new but fast-growing crypto hub for GameFi and Web3 could generate huge returns in 2024. MCADE lets players earn income through play-to-earn games, staking, and community initiatives. Its finite token supply ensures scarcity value as adoption grows.
For investors with higher risk tolerance, a small LUNA position may make sense anticipating a potential trend reversal. But limit exposure given ongoing uncertainties about its viability after UST‘s breakdown. Most crypto portfolios should emphasize safer blockchain investments until Terra can rebuild greater trust and usage.
Conclusion
Based on my analysis as a market analyst, I don‘t recommend buying LUNA currently while its outlook remains so tarnished. Although its price is heavily discounted, the risks still decisively outweigh potential rewards.
Terra faces immense challenges ahead rebuilding developer and user adoption after its algorithmic stablecoin UST failed its peg so spectacularly. While a technical rebound could occur off capitulation lows, sustained upside seems unlikely without major progress restoring LUNA‘s utility.
Patient investors may potentially reap huge gains buying Luna if its revival succeeds in the coming years. But we need clear evidence first that Terra can reestablish stability and growth in fundamentals. Until then, other cryptos like ETH and MCADE offer better risk-adjusted upside potential over a 12-month horizon in my view.
