Mastering Splatoon 3‘s Addictive Turf War Battles
As a dedicated Splatoon player since the original, I‘ve sunk countless hours perfecting the art of turf war domination. There‘s no better feeling than splatting foes and coating stages in your neon ink one match at a time.
Trust me when I say that turf war is the perfect introduction to Splatoon‘s chaotic brand of multiplayer mayhem. So whether you‘re a greenhorn or seasoned veteran, this comprehensive guide by a lifelong fan will teach you everything you need to know.
Why Turf War Reigns Supreme
Turf war is the quintessential Splatoon mode for good reason. Teams of four battle it out in creative arenas for 3 minute matches with one simple goal — cover more ground in your ink than the enemy.
It captures Splatoon‘s signatures of stylish movement, turf control tactics, and fierce but fun competition perfectly. Splat an opponent and you force them to respawn, opening an opportunity to coat their progress. Routes that were once safe passages now become enemy death traps.
Winning earns your team points towards catalog levels along with boosts to your leaderboard rating. Of course, you‘ll also gain standard experience from matches to unlock more gear and weapons too. We‘ll dive deeper into progression systems and rewards later on.
First, let‘s breakdown how this addictive mode actually works beyond its straight-forward premise…
Scoring System and Match Flow
- Teams of 4 Inklings/Octolings face off
- 3 minutes to ink as much turf as possible
- Floor, walls, and some objects count
- Team with the highest percentage inked wins
- Gain catalog XP/levels and leaderboard rating
I‘ve inked over 500 hours worth of turf across 3 titles in the series. That experience pays off when claiming vital chokepoints, planning coordinated special attacks, and holding the center ground as time trickles away.
Win or lose, you‘ll earn coins and experience too. So don‘t worry about being bombarded as a newcomer against hardened veterans! Now let‘s get into actually playing…
Joining Online Turf War Matches
Getting into the splat-filled fun with friends or rivals worldwide is an easy process. Off to Inkopolis!
With Random Players (Regular Battle)
From either Inkopolis Plaza or the main menu lobby, select Regular Battle.

This automatically begins matchmaking based on your skill level, searching for other players. Once 8 players are found, a random map is chosen by vote and teams assigned by the game.
Then the countdown begins…time to battle!
Note: You can press minus in lobbies to enable Rookie Battle Protection for beginners. This shelters you from experienced players for your first 20 levels.
Private Lobbies with Friends
For casual play or competitive training with friends, Private Battles are the way to go. These allow full customization and progress tracking across multiple sessions.
From any lobby, choose Private Battle then press L to open your friends list and invite allies to join. 4-8 players can battle it out!

The creator of the private room controls all settings like match time, maps, special rules, etc. Feel free to establish house rules among friends here too — no roller weapons, pistols only, anything goes!
Ideally build a core squad with voice chat for peak coordination. Schedule practice times to drill advanced tactics and roll right over random public matches!
Now you know how to access both social and league matches — let‘s get tactical.
Turf War Tips, Tricks, and Strategies
Ink responsibly out there! Beyond just coating the floor, make use of your full arsenal with these essential tips:
Secure Your Spawn ASAP
At the very start of a match, rush forward to ink spawn point walls and a launchpad back to center. This builds an ink source you can swiftly retreat and refill through. Never face off 1v4 with no escape!
- Caution: Don‘t just fire wildly at spawn. Be efficient in spreading ink across floors, walls, crates.
- Prime your base early so teammates can press forward faster into enemy territory.
- Leaving spawn exposed early on makes comebacks nearly impossible!
Master Your Main Weapon‘s Strengths
Splattershots spray rapidly but lack range. Splat rollers leave wide paths yet need to get close. Learn the recoil, fire rate, damage, and spread of whatever main weapon you wield:
Shooters – Splattershots, Blasters, Chargers, etc.
Rollers – Variants of the classic Splat Roller
Sloshers – Hurl ink in arched projectile waves
Sub weapons like toxic mist or burst bombs have strategic purposes too. Discover your playstyle!
Squid Surge Through Ink
Swim briskly through your team‘s ink in squid form to move faster and replenish ammo. But why stop there?
Squid Roll sideways or forward to swiftly evade attacks. Combine with swimming to be an elusive target.
Squid Surge up or across walls and tight spaces swiftly. Master the verticality and be unpredictable!
Control Key Territory
Charging straight at the enemy base is folly when you neglect vital ground first. Establish map control points early:
1. Dominate your team spawn
2. Secure the central area
3. Steal any elevated terrain
Once your ink is firmly set, cut off enemy retreat points and trap them! Now execute coordinated special attacks for a brutal surge forward.

- Create locked down zones the enemy must commit just to cross into
- Use Toxic Mist and Walls to block off side routes and guard advances
Coordinate Your Squad
Stick with teammates instead of lone wolf ramblings. Call out enemy locations or vulnerable objectives.
Lure and flank opponents into pre-planned kill zones.
Ink vacant areas the frontline leaves behind.
Combine specials to devastate with cascading area attacks!
Establish calls for when the enemy is…
- Pushing left/right lanes
- Charging the center
- Making a base sneak attack
- Prepared to unleash specials
Counter appropriately and listen for instructions from squad leaders. Staying unified as a coordinated assault team is critical!
Use Support Items
Sub weapons like Splash Walls or Sprinklers provide immense tactical advantages:
- Sprinklers automatically ink designated zones for you
- Squid Beakons give your team preset super jumps to claimed areas
- Fizzy Bombs boost into tough-to-ink spots and higher ground
Don‘t just rely on your main shooter. Utilize support gear to distract, disrupt, and divide enemies across the battlefield. Now let‘s get into the oh-so-sweet rewards fueling these turf skirmishes!
Progression Systems and Rewards
Even if the fun of splendid chaos isn‘t enough, consider the luscious loot you‘ll unlock by persisting:
Catalog Levels
Earn 1000p of inked turf and your catalog raises by 1 level. There are 100s of levels to grind through with the bar constantly rising higher…
Each 10 levels unlocks a piece of gear or customization until the max S rank caps are met.

Once you reach the highest peaks, exclusive titles and banners will clearly identify you as an Inkopolis veteran across lobbies and matches!
Standard Experience
Turf wars assist with standard leveling as well. Winning earns substantially more raw experience for use in unlocking weapons and gear abilities.
Here are some average benchmarks:
- Under Level 10 – 1000-1500 XP per match
- Level 15-30 – 1600-2500 XP per match
- Level 30+ – 2500-4000+ XP per match
Leaderboard Supremacy
Think you have the ink skills to dominate worldwide? Shoot for the regional and global leaderboards!
X Rank – Top 5% of players
S+ Rank – Next 15% in skill
S Rank – Next 20%
Only the elite few ever touch the pinnacle of X ratings. Expect intense competition and evaluation as you rise through stringent thresholds.
Titles, Badges, and Style
Last but not least, show off your accomplishments and flair with titles, badges, emotes, and more!
Lobby Titles : Showcase career stats or recent achievements
Badges : Ink certain amounts, special accolades
Emotes : Taunt foes mid-match
Callouts : Spray signals for your team
Banners : Customize with badges and colors
I‘ll never forget the fear in an enemy‘s eyes when they see a [MAX Ranked LVL 99] charger wielder swimming right at them…
Final Tips for Ink Domination
Before you paint that roller and charge in, keep these last tips in mind:
- Use motion controls! This allows faster, more precise aiming across all weapons. Turn them on immediately and get a feel through the singleplayer mode first if needed.
- Pick the RIGHT weapon for maps. Chargers excel on long sightline stages. Short range maps favor rapid shooters and rollers.
- Play the objective ALWAYS. Even if you‘re racking up kills, neglecting the core goal of inking turf will make your team suffer!
- Review your match stats to see performance breakdowns on turf inked, accuracy, etc. Identify weak areas to improve.
As a lifelong Splatoon fan and content creator, I hope this guide serves you well in conquering turf war supremacy. Let me know if you have any other questions! Till next time…
Stay Fresh!
