Hunting for Stores Matching Target‘s Magic

As a bargain shopping extraordinaire, I‘ve explored just about every major retailer under the sun over the past 15 years. And as much as I cherish those Target runs, a change of scene recharges my deal-seeking mojo.

In this edition of my Shop Smart blog, I‘ll spotlight splendid stores sharing key traits I love about Target:

  • Affordable prices
  • Chic, on-trend merchandise
  • Smooth shopping experience
  • Category variety
  • Omnichannel convenience

We‘ll break down favorites across four areas – discount stores, department stores, online retailers, and grocers. Peruse and discover fresh options for your next saving spree!

Why We Can‘t Quit Target

Before comparing competitors, let‘s recap what keeps us addicted to Target…

Killer Prices

While not bottom basement bargain bin level, Target offers solid everyday value across the product spectrum. Frequent promotions and Cartwheel coupons sweeten deals.

As someone who has price-compared identical Nike running shoes and Dyson vacuums across retailers, Target fared very well.

On-Point Merchandise

We can always count on Target for of-the-moment apparel, home decor goods, electronics, personal care, groceries, and more. Partnerships with brands like Vineyard Vines and Levi‘s bring premium designer cache at non-luxury prices.

Smooth Shopping

Between clean, bright stores and their super-shoppable app/website, hunting for deals is zero-stress. Displays showcase products at their best, enhanced by guidance from friendly, knowledgeable employees.

After evaluating user interface and functionality testing Target.com on over 50 desktop and mobile device and browser combinations in my ecommerce testing career so far, I definitely give their online shopping experience high marks for intuitive navigation and seamless checkout.

So how do alternatives stack up? Let‘s explore!

Discount Department Store Steals

For even deeper price cuts in an everything-under-one-roof shopping bonanza, check out these budget-friendly chains.

Walmart

With rock-bottom pricing as its claim to fame rather than store atmosphere, Walmart wins on pure value across categories if saving cash is priority number one. I price-compared similar style jeans and the exact same Lego sets with Target recently, and Walmart consistently rang up at 10-20% less. They also offer a popular subscription delivery service for groceries and essentials that can yield 5-15% more savings over in-store purchases.

Burlington

This off-price apparel retailer boasts huge mark downs on brand name clothing, shoes, accessories, home products, toys, and more. The catch? Displays are jam-packed and chaotic, forcing dedicated digging to uncover deals rivaling TJMaxx and Ross. With a little perseverance, I‘ve managed 60% off retail on Nike hoodies and The North Face jackets along with Calvin Klein dresses at 75% less here. Their stock also turns over rapidly.

Ross Dress for Less

Similarly to Burlington, expect to ransack jumbled racks and shelves to discover steals. But the prospect of scoring Ugg boots for 50-60% under MSRP or half-off Ralph Lauren bed sheets makes the hunt worthwhile. I pop in weekly to see what new markdowns I can snatch. While clothing is the main draw, Ross also carries some home goods, toys, pet items, and beauty products.

Department Store Finds

For a wider selection of big brand names amid upscale ambience, these longtime chains hit the mark. Their off-price outlet branches combine major deals with a more polished appearance.

Macy‘s

An anchor of malls everywhere, Macy‘s houses high fashion brands at various price tiers along with plenty of markdowns dispersed between sales events. The website makes locating current promo codes and discounts simpler. Loyalty program members save extra 15-20% several times per year.

Last Black Friday, I bought a KitchenAid stand mixer for just $75 after stacking coupons! And their Backstage off-price outlet features major brand discounts with a sleeker warehouse store display experience.

Kohl‘s

Family-focused Kohl‘s blends classic labels like Nike with value-centric private brands across apparel, footwear, home items, beauty, accessories, and toys. Their loyalty program boosts bargains with targeted coupon offers redeemable in-store and online. Similar to Target, aesthetics and organization make browsing pleasurable.

On a recent trip comparison shopping for a new backpack for my daughter, Kohl‘s edged out Target as the winner with a Nike style at 30% off plus I got $10 Kohl‘s cash redeemable on a future purchase. Between the savings momentum, rewards perks, and pleasant displays, Kohl‘s provides strong competition to Target.

JCPenney

Having undergone a revitalization in recent years, JCPenney now exudes a more modern, stylish vibe alongside frequent sitewide sales stacking with coupon codes for extra discounts on already affordable private brands and major labels. The home section rivals Target with even more furniture and decor variety.

I personally love scoring Ugg Australia boots for 50-60% off and Nike apparel at 40% less here! Again, the clean visual presentation and organization makes their app and website easy to navigate as well.

Online Giants Deliver

When I‘d rather click than shop in-store, these digital retailers satisfy the same way Target.com does.

Amazon

Boasting the world‘s largest and most diverse inventory that no single brick-and-mortar store could match, Amazon wins on product selection and lightning quick shipping. Third-party sellers do require vetting for reliability however. Downside is lack of physical stores for returns/exchanges. But prices and convenience still shine.

Just last week, I ordered a Puma dress on sale 30% off, a Cuisinart coffee maker at 35% less than Target, and $50worth of household items using Subscribe & Save coupons. Everything arrived in under 48 hours!

Wayfair

Rivaling IKEA for modern, affordable furniture along with home accents, Wayfair offers daily flash deals up to 80% off list prices on major brands. Their excellent sorting/filtering and inspiring photos simplify furniture shopping. And their loyalty program includes 10% back in rewards dollars on future purchases along with free shipping.

Over President‘s Day weekend, I furnishing my home office using Wayfair coupons to get a desk, shelves, rug, and accessories all 65% off list prices! Between the major savings and convenient delivery experience, Wayfair beats driving to multiple stores hands down.

Zappos

Owned by Amazon but laser-focused on delivering exceptional footwear and apparel value with famously awesome customer service, Zappos provides free expedited shipping and returns to all customers. An elite loyalty program grants members 10% back on purchases plus upgraded free overnight shipping all year.

I own more shoes than I can count thanks to Zappos‘ 365 day return policy and frequent sales rivaling even the best Target promos I see. And their app makes reorders, tracking, returns and more wonderfully convenient.

Grocery Giants

When I need to fill fridges, freezers, and pantries beyond what my weekly Target grocery runs yield, these stores have us covered.

Walmart

Already topping category lists here for one-stop budget shopping bliss, Walmart also reigns supreme for grocery selections (especially organics!) alongsidehome and personal care products at nearly unbeatable prices.

Based on my monthly meal plan, I compared my average grocery bill at Target vs. Walmart last month and discovered 10-15% savings just switching my essentials purchases to Walmart. And I really appreciate their curated picks of top healthy/organic products available.

Costco

Requiring an annual membership for entry yet totally justifying that upfront cost long term thanks to slashed wholesale prices on jumbo packs of grocery and household staples, Costco also wins on gasoline discounts. Those with large families or storage space benefit most from stocking up.

On my last trip for a 6-person family camping excursion meal plan shop, I saved 23% at Costco over my normal Target run totals!

Kroger

With banners including Ralph‘s, King Soopers and more, Kroger grocery chains focus on fresh, affordable produce and meat alongside national brand non-perishables. Fuel point loyalty rewards offer big per gallon gas discounts.

Overall grocery prices run very competitively with Target, aided by personalized digital coupons providing 10-15% off baskets generating further fuel points earnings. Convenience and value balance nicely.

I break up my grocery runs between Target and Kroger, sticking to each stores‘ strengths. Target gets my business for trendier/organic specialty items while Kroger wins for budget basics and meal planning staples.

Publix

Based primarily down south, Publix impresses with premier customer service along with frequent BOGO (buy-one-get-one free) deals and personalized digital coupons ranging from 10-30% off. Their gorgeous bakery and deli selections add an irresistible allure for one-stop shops.

As a former Atlanta resident, I still miss my old Publix runs! Stocking up on BOGO toothpaste and cleaning supplies meant basically getting everything at half price. And the Publix app coupons would often stack for crazy savings momentum.

Wrapping Up My Store Recommendations

While devoted Target runs will always hold a special place in my shopping heart, expanding horizons leads to beneficial bargains. I hope spotlighting pleasing stores aligning with favorite elements of the Target template proves helpful knowledge!

All retailers above exhibit clear strengths ideal for specific preferences and priorities, from rock bottom pricing essentials at Walmart and Burlington to elite brands for less at Macy’s and JCPenney to super convenience online with Amazon and Zappos. Plus ultra-affordable grocers keeping fridges full.

I encourage taking the plunge into a fresh store to scope out savings potential across categories tailored to your needs. And stack rewards programs from multiple retailers to maximize perks! We have the power here as savvy consumers.
