Tears of the Kingdom Review: The Skybound Legend Nintendo Needed

Link overlooking Hyrule

Six long years after the release of the instant classic Breath of the Wild, Nintendo has finally unveiled its hotly anticipated sequel. In Tears of the Kingdom (TotK), Link‘s adventures reach daring new heights as the land of Hyrule is torn from the earth and sent skyward.

As a professional gamer and creator, I‘ve eagerly followed this sequel through years of rumors and fan wishes. After pouring over 40 hours into exploring the clouds above Hyrule, I can firmly state that this new chapter retains everything fans loved about its predecessor while introducing exciting new features and mysteries to uncover.

Come soar alongside me into the clouds as we examine everything TotK has to offer across key categories:

Immersive Storytelling

An emotional narrative grounded in memorable characters that propels you forward | Score: 9.5/10

Without delving into heavy spoilers, TotK‘s story begins with Hyrule being physically torn from the ground by an unknown malevolent force. Entire regions are sent skyward, broken into islands hovering above the surface below.

As Link, you must journey between these hovering landmasses to uncover the mysteries behind this catastrophe and save your home once more.

Fans of Breath of the Wild will be happy to know many beloved characters reappear, including Princess Zelda, the four Champions, Impa, Purah and Robbie, and more. Their expanded roles add flavorful close companionship for Link rather than leaving our hero isolated and mute as in the past.

Over 25+ hours, I grew to appreciate each character deeply through side quests centered around their new settlements-turned-sky islands. Link may be the courageous Champion we embody, but the lives he touches shine as a core theme to drive the narrative forward.

Without spoiling events, the main threat also builds steadily through intriguing lore drops and grand, cinematic cutscenes straight out of a CGI film. TotK finds a balance between tugging at long-time fans‘ nostalgic heartstrings while introducing an exciting new saga with emotional weight and mystery of its own.

If I had one area of improvement, I would extend a few character quest lines to better resolve their personal arcs. But the poignant epilogue shows hope remains as Hyrule persists thanks to the unbreakable bonds Link forms.

Expanding the Scope

Massive sky islands rife with secrets beckon your urge to explore | Score: 10/10

While Breath of the Wild pioneered a fully connected open world, TotK opts to break Hyrule into separate landmasses hovering in a vast sky zone. This shattered kingdom raised speculation about stifled exploration, but that could not be further from reality.

Each region retains the intricate detail and personality as before while gaining more focused themes. Lush spiraling peaks at the Temple of Time, a desert wasteland at Gerudo Town, the haunted lost woods of Korok Forest – all are rendered with localized challenges to overcome and booty to discover.

Verticality also expands the playground exponentially. I found myself gliding off mile-high cliffs between islands, uncovering hidden grottos and bonuses rewarding inventive navigation with Link‘s versatile moveset. Updrafts send you soaring to majestic new heights!

But Nintendo games have always been about brains over brawn as well. Your Sheikah Slate of abilities upgrades to now give Link a magnetic bracelet of sorts, allowing him to adhere to and repel certain metal objects. Combining this magnetic polarity mechanic with classic Zelda-style block puzzles made each mini dungeon an enjoyable brain teaser.

The scope does narrow in the late game to focus back on core regions. Yet the freedom enabling memorable stories through gameplay remains TotK‘s crowning achievement.

Familiar Gameplay Perfected

Honed controls and balanced progression reward wandering journeys between sky islands | Score: 10/10

As the old saying goes, don‘t fix what isn‘t broken. And the expertly tuned gameplay loop from Breath of the Wild remains marvelous even six years later. For those just joining:

  • Exploration freedom rewards curiosity to wander at will, organically discovering puzzles, foes, and upgrades
  • Metroidvania-style progression means earnable tools let you access areas previously out of reach
  • Physics-driven interaction between elemental chemistry and environment breeds creative solutions
  • Geared RPG growth accumulates from defeated foes and treasures found to tailor your playstyle rather than abstract experience points

By maintaining this compelling loop but evolving Link‘s navigation, TotK‘s designers have crafted a masterclass in iteration upon great game mechanics. I often found myself utterly absorbed running between sky islands, following breadcrumbs of puzzles and using my tools in new ways. That special "just one more thing" sensation hit frequently even 40 hours in!

Late game does skew more linear to present ultimate challenges requiring your full repertoire. But the freedom enabling memorable journeys between these key events remains the shining core philosophy.

A Visual Masterpiece

Painterly art direction conveys unmatched atmospheric charm | Score: 9/10

Can beautiful worlds evoke emotions just as strongly as film or literature? TotK presents a visually resounding "yes!"

While raw polygons clearly show the age of Nintendo‘s six-year-old Switch hardware compared to bleeding edge platforms, artistic vision surpasses pure processing power. Every new scene invites me to pause and admire the composition – pointed mountains fading into silhouetted clouds, flickering particles in detailed volumetric light, golden temples suspended impossibly above shimmering lakes.

Each sky island marries style and substance as well. Drifting embers across ashen Gerudo Town rooftops hint at deeper mysteries afoot. Overgrown foliage covering broken Clock Town structures suggests poignant stories from a once vibrant city now lost to time and elevation.

If I must nitpick, cutscenes expose the Switch‘s limitations in moments. Jagged edges and mild texture anomalies creep in for brief scenes requiring lots of motion and effects rendering. But make no mistake – while not the most technically dazzling game around, TotK remains one of the most artistically inspired.

Heartstring Melodies

Iconic tunes dynamically sprinkled across kingdoms in the clouds | Score: 10/10

Legendary Zelda composer Koji Kondo joins protege Hajime Wakai once again for this skybound sequel. And like past games, TotK‘s orchestral score stands equal with story and world building to stoke feelings of grandeur, danger, and triumph.

I cannot state this strongly enough: dynamic music hugely magnifies key events. Somber piano notes as you glide over forgotten ruins. Stirring battle trumpets against a ruthless gatekeeper foe. Gentle fantasy choruses while cooking atop a remote mountain refuge.

These melodies intrinsically respond to your chosen path through Hyrule. Where rival AAA games rely on static or repeating atmospheric tones, Nintendo‘s masterful themes kick in to complement milestones on your personally paved odyssey rather than adhering to rigid programming.

This interactive approach keeps wondrous auditory surprises around every corner regardless of play order. Closing my eyes during isolated pan flute themes over lonely gardened courtyards ignited imagination nearly on par with the rich visuals themselves.

I am hard pressed to name any game soundtracks evoking adventure spirit as strongly as Legend of Zelda‘s atmospheric suites. And TotK‘s carefully adapted ballads rank among the best.

Worth the Wait

Tears of the Kingdom faced towering expectations – both as the sequel to an instant masterpiece and the marquee title concluding the Switch‘s lifecycle. While a six year development period caused some doubts, I‘m ecstatic to report Nintendo has once again delivered peerless polish.

This remains Breath of the Wild‘s world we fell in love with, now ascended skyward with new movement abilities to unlock and cloud-piercing kingdoms rich with mystery. An emotional story weaves familiar characters into an ancient struggle literally tearing Hyrule itself apart one floating island at a time. Signature musical notes ring true to this franchise‘s unparalleled lineage.

Make no mistake, with playtime easily cresting past 40 hours for moderate completionists, Tears of the Kingdom earns its naming among the grandest Zelda quests ever conceived by the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto and team. This sets a new high bar not just for the series, but sweeping open world adventure RPGs as a whole.

Overall: 9.5/10
