The earth filled dam stands 52 feet tall and stretches 1,600 feet across Jackson Creek. At normal pool elevation, the lake covers 299 acres and reaches depths of up to 60 feet near the dam.

Swimming at Hardy Lake

As your local swim expert, I can tell you that Hardy Lake offers some of the best swimming in Southern Indiana! Here are a few things to know:

The beach sits on the southeast side of the lake, providing a perfect spot to swim, fish, or relax in the sun. Lifeguards are on duty from 10am – 6pm during summer months.

In addition to the beach, designated swim areas marked by buoys are located near the beach and on the west side of the lake. These areas are free of boats from 10am – 6pm daily in summer.

The lake is tested regularly for E.coli and other contaminants to ensure safe swimming conditions. I recommend checking the water quality reports before heading out.

With 17 miles of winding shoreline, Hardy Lake is a boating paradise. Here‘s what you need to know:

Two boat ramps provide access to the lake. The main ramp is located near the dam and beach area.

Power boats with motors over 10 horsepower are restricted to the main lake area near the dam. Electric trolling motors are permitted elsewhere.

Canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, rowboats, and small electric motors are allowed in the shallow coves and inlets.

Pontoon boats, fishing boats, paddle boats and more are available to rent from the marina during summer months.

I recommend heading out early in the day to avoid congestion on busy summer weekends. Always boat responsibly and respect no wake zones.

Fishing at Hardy Lake

• Try nearshore areas early and late in the day to target bass and crappie. I like the pads and brush piles near the beach.

• For bluegill and perch, fish mid-lake humps and submerged structure during the day.

• Catfish bite well on cut bait like shad fished near the bottom in deeper spots.

• Spring and fall are great times to fish from shore as fish move to shallows to feed and spawn.

• Stocking occurs in May and June. Largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish are abundant.

The Lakeview Trail is perfect for families. At just 1 mile long, it offers terrific lake vistas and opportunities to rest at benches along the way.

Leashed pets are permitted on trails, just be sure to clean up after them. Hiking early in the day will allow you to beat the heat. Don‘t forget bug spray and plenty of drinking water.

Picnicking and Camping

Hardy Lake has a variety of picnic and camping options suitable for individuals, families, and groups.

Five picnic shelters with electricity and grills can be reserved for a daily fee. They accommodate 25-50 people.

The campground has modern restrooms, hot showers, and 138 campsites available on a first come, first served basis. Sites have electric and water hookups.

For a little more comfort, I suggest reserving one of the lake view cabins that sleep up to 6 people and include air conditioning, kitchenettes, and bedding.

RV camping is available at 50 sites with electric hookups. Primitive tent camping is also allowed.
