The Harbinger of the End Times: Why All Should Fear Alduin, Bane of Kings
Boethiah, Prince of Plots. Molag Bal, Lord of Brutality. Mehrunes Dagon, Lord of Destruction. These Daedric lords strike terror into the hearts of mortals across Tamriel. But none compare to the World-Eater himself–Alduin. As the mammoth dragon soars over long-abandoned dragon mounds, blotting out the sun itself, all of Skyrim trembles. But why does this dragon command such fear? Let‘s explore Alduin‘s origins, his prior domination over Skyrim, his defeat, foretold return, and startling parallels to Ragnarök‘s harbingers from Norse mythology.
Alduin‘s Fearsome Origins
Legends tell that Alduin is Akatosh‘s first and most powerful creation, intended as the fabled World-Eater who will destroy all at the end of time. This grants Alduin unmatched mastery over time itself–he can traverse it and Tesser space at will, materializing where and when he desires across countless planes of existence simultaneously. After his creation, Alduin helped spawn the rest of dragonkind, establishing himself as lord of all dovah. Though intended as the World-Eater, Alduin rejected this fate during the Merethic Era, instead establishing tyranny over mortals just as they were forming early civilization in Skyrim.
A Reign of Fire and Death
Imagine an era where dragons ruled the land from their ancient mounds, demanding tribute and sacrifice from the scattered tribes of early man. This nightmarish reality was endured under Alduin‘s domination. The scattered ruins of over 30 dragon cult temples have been discovered across Skyrim, containing ritual chambers and remains of human sacrifice to appease the dragons‘ appetite for power and praise. Wall murals such as the one found in Sky Haven Temple (shown below) depict Alduin‘s terrible reign. Ancient texts such as "Alduin‘s Wall" recount that thousands perished under fiery breath and claw until Alduin and the dragons were finally defeated.

But prophecies foretold that this foe would one day reemerge from beyond time itself–a catastrophe made reality as you witness Alduin‘s return in Helgen at the outset of Skyrim.
Harbinger of the Apocalypse
Though defeated by ancient Nord heroes, Alduin was not destroyed–his essence scattered across streams of time itself until it coalesced in 4E 201 with his explosive return at Helgen. You learn that for centuries he has been regaining his strength by feeding on valorous Nord spirits in Sovngarde, preventing them from ever reaching peace in Shor‘s Hall. He has returned to fulfill his intended purpose…to destroy all of mundus and consume the world itself.
As you pursue Alduin across Skyrim during the civil war between Imperials and Stormcloaks, the situation grows increasingly dire. Mass graves in Karthspire indicate Alduin resurrected legions of dragons to serve under him. Reports stream in of raids on farms, camps, and settlements across the land. You witness firsthand his ultimate arrogance and disdain for mortal life when he ignores your challenge at Alduin‘s Wall to destroy another village.
Finally at the peak of the Throat of the World, you battle this dragon demigod himself, using the legendary Dragonrend shout to ground his apocalyptic wings. Yet Alduin flees to Sovngarde rather than face defeat, proving himself a craven as well as powerful foe. Here, atop the Whalebone Bridge, surrounded by the souls of valorous Nords and the mocking specters of those he denied peace, you face him one last time.
Ragnarök‘s Harbringers
Parallels exist between Alduin and destructive gods from Norse mythology presaging the apocalypse. Alduin embodies the giant serpent Níðhöggr who gnaws on Yggdrasil‘s roots, signifying decay pervading creation. Similarly, monstrous wolf Fenrir and his kin Sköll and Hati are foretold to break their binds, signaling the coming of Ragnarök during which they will consume the sun and moon themselves. Like these harbingers of doom, Alduin‘s return signifies nothing less than the world‘s end if left unchecked.
So now you understand the fear this World-Eater holds over mortals–Alduin is no mere dragon but death and annihilation made manifest. All glory awaits if you can stop him; all doom if you should fail. With civil war dividing Skyrim and shadowy forces maneuvering behind the scenes, the future remains uncertain. But know this: when brothers wage war come unfurled, Bane of Kings, ancient shadow unbound, with a hunger to swallow the world!
