The Rarity and Value of Flying Pikachu V – A Detailed Guide
With odds of just 1 in 144 packs, Flying Pikachu V is one of the rarest and most valuable cards in the Celebrations set. This guide has everything you need to know about this iconic ultra rare!
What Makes Flying Pikachu V So Rare?
As part of the Celebrations classic collection, Flying Pikachu V has an official rarity of Ultra Rare. This means approximately 1 in every 144 Celebrations packs contains a Flying Pikachu V card. To put that into perspective, here are the odds for other Celebrations hits:
| Card Rarity | Odds of Pulling |
|---|---|
| Common | 1 in 5 packs |
| Uncommon | 1 in 3 packs |
| Rare | 1 in 12 packs |
| Ultra Rare (Flying Pikachu V) | 1 in 144 packs |
That makes Flying Pikachu V over 10 times rarer than regular Rare cards from Celebrations like Groudon and Tapu Lele!
According to collector opening data aggregated by PokeGuardian, the pull rate for Flying Pikachu V shakes out to approximately 1 in 156 packs, or 0.64% of packs. So the real world odds may be even tougher than the official 1 in 144 estimate.
How Does It Compare to Other Rare Pikachus?
Flying Pikachu V is considerably more rare than most other Pikachu cards. For example:
- Flying Pikachu VMAX (Main): 1 in 108 packs
- Surfing Pikachu V: 1 in 256 packs
- Pikachu V (Vivid Voltage): 1 in 95 packs
- Pikachu VMAX (Vivid): 1 in 273 packs
So among rare Pikachu variants, Flying Pikachu V stands out with its incredibly limited supply and coveted status as part of the Celebrations 25th Anniversary collection.
Just How Many Exist?
Based on production information, the population of PSA graded Flying Pikachu V cards is believed to be under 300 copies. And a very small number of those will be pristine PSA 10s. Experts estimate no more than 75-100 PSA 10 Flying Pikachu Vs exist.
For comparison, the Flying Pikachu VMAX has an estimated PSA 10 population of around 500. So Flying Pikachu V is in very limited supply indeed!
What is Flying Pikachu V Worth?
As one of the most sought-after cards from Celebrations, Flying Pikachu V carries a hefty price tag on the secondary market. Here‘s a look at recorded sales data:
| PSA Grade | Recent Sale Prices |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 Gem Mint | $350 – $750 |
| PSA 9 Mint | $225 – $400 |
| PSA 8 Near Mint+ | $100 – $250 |
| Raw NM/M | $75 – $175 |
Gem mint PSA 10s in particular fetch massive premiums thanks to their flawless condition and extreme rarity. Just one PSA 10 example sold for $750 in October 2022!
Why So Valuable?
There are a few key factors driving Flying Pikachu V‘s incredible value:
- Extremely limited – Believed to be under 300 PSA graded copies
- Iconic and nostalgic art – Pikachu is the mascot
- Part of Celebrations 25th Anniversary set
- High demand from investors and collectors
Scarcity combined with strong nostalgic appeal makes this card a grail for many Pokemon collectors.
Will Prices Keep Rising?
As more collectors enter the hobby and supplies dwindle further, Flying Pikachu V still has room to rise in the coming years. However, near-term volatility is expected. Overall, this card remains an exceptional investment due to its iconic status and tiny population.
Flying Pikachu V Gameplay
Beyond collecting, Flying Pikachu V does see some niche competitive play thanks to its ability to avoid damage.
In the Pokemon TCG, Flying Pikachu V has 90HP and a single Energy attack – Fly. The text reads:
"Flip a coin. If tails, this attack does nothing. If heads, during your opponent‘s next turn, prevent all damage from attacks to this Pokemon."
So if you flip heads, Flying Pikachu V cannot be damaged for one turn. This stalls for time and forces your opponent to alter their game plan.
While not the most competitive card, Flying Pikachu V fits nicely into certain rogue decks as a tech attacker. It combines nicely with cards like Chaotic Swell that also prevent damage. The main downside is the 50% chance of failing the coin flip.
Top Flying Pokemon Cards for Play
While Flying Pikachu V is fun, here are some more powerful flying type Pokemon cards for competitive play:
- Tornadus V (Chilling Reign) – Strong attack disruption
- Moltres V (Chilling Reign) – Knocks out damaged Pokemon
- Rayquaza VMAX (Evolving Skies) – Devastating VSTAR Power
- Dragonite V (Evolving Skies) – Hits for 240 damage!
Spotting Fake Flying Pikachu Cards
Due to Flying Pikachu V‘s high value, counterfeits abound online and at flee markets. Here‘s what to look for when inspecting cards:
- Miscut edges and corners
- Poor color saturation
- Wrong card texture and thickness
- Spelling/wording errors
- Pixelated or blurry image when magnified
Always compare to images of authentic versions and study the fine details closely. Reputable grading companies like PSA and BGS are best for guaranteeing legitimacy.
The Bottom Line – An Iconic Card and Investment
Boasting insanely low pull rates of 1 in 144 packs and a minuscule PSA 10 population under 100, Flying Pikachu V rightfully earns its place as the most valuable and coveted card from Celebrations. This iconic ultra rare showcases Pikachu‘s worldwide appeal and nostalgia perfectly. Prices fluctuate but expect to invest at least $225 for PSA 9 copies and over $500 for elusive PSA 10s. But for collectors looking to add a true trophy card to their portfolio, Flying Pikachu V is about as good as it gets!
