- Shape Brushes: Rather than a simple dot or stroke, these brushes paint with a specific shape like leaves, stars, hearts, etc. They‘re useful for quickly adding repeating design elements.
- Pattern Brushes: Similar to shape brushes, pattern brushes fill your stroke with a repeating pattern or texture. These are great for creating borders, backgrounds, and decorative elements.
- Tool-Specific Brushes: These are brushes designed for certain editing tasks like dodging and burning, sharpening, skin retouching, etc. They‘re popular among photographers and photo editors.
The beauty of Photoshop is you can customize your brush collection to perfectly suit your needs and artistic style. There are countless free and premium brush packs available online in addition to the default set – which is already quite extensive at over 300 brushes!

So now that you know why brushes are so powerful and important, let me show you exactly how to install them. It‘s quick and easy with these 5 simple steps!
Step 1: Find and Download Brushes
The first step to adding new brushes is finding ones you want! There are many reputable sites that offer free and paid Photoshop brush packs. Here are a few of the best resources:
- Adobe: The maker of Photoshop provides a nice selection of high-quality brush sets for free. They‘re conveniently sorted into categories like Sketching, Painting, Effects, and more.
- Brusheezy: Brusheezy is one of the most popular digital art resource sites with a huge collection of brushes. You can find everything from Photoshop Actions to textures to gradients here too. While many of the brushes are free, some do require a subscription to download.
- Adobe Creative Cloud: If you have a Creative Cloud subscription, you can download brushes and other add-ons directly from the Photoshop interface. Just click the Creative Cloud icon in the top right and browse the brushes section.
- GFXfever: This site offers some really unique and artistic brush packs that I haven‘t seen anywhere else. They have a great collection of ink and watercolor brushes that are perfect for illustrators.
When selecting brushes, I recommend looking for packs that include a variety of brush types in the style you‘re going for. It‘s also helpful if the creator provides full-size sample swatches or a demo video so you can get a sense of how the brushes perform before downloading.
Once you‘ve found a brush pack you like, download the file to your computer. Most brushes come in a ZIP folder, so you‘ll need to extract the contents first. The brush file itself will be in ABR format.
I suggest creating a dedicated folder on your hard drive for storing all your brushes. It will make them much easier to find and install later. I have mine organized by art style and project type.
Step 2: Open the Brush Settings in Photoshop
Now that you have an ABR brush file, it‘s time to install it in Photoshop! The process is slightly different depending on your version of Photoshop. I‘ll cover the two most recent versions here: Photoshop 2022 and Photoshop 2023.
To open the Brush Settings in Photoshop 2022:
- First, open Photoshop and create a new document or open an existing project. You must have a document open to access the brush options.
- Select the Brush Tool from the left toolbar or press B on your keyboard.
- With the Brush Tool selected, locate the Brush Settings panel in the top options bar. It will show a stroke preview of the current brush.
- Click the small gear icon in the top right corner of the Brush Settings panel and choose "Import Brushes" from the dropdown menu.
In Photoshop 2023, the process is largely the same with one small difference:
- Instead of a Brush Settings panel in the top options bar, you‘ll see a Brushes icon.
- Click the Brushes icon to open the Brushes panel, then click the menu icon in the top right corner. Choose "Import Brushes" from the menu.
Both methods will open a file browser window where you can navigate to your downloaded ABR brush file. Let‘s take a look at that next!
Step 3: Locate and Load Your ABR File
In the file browser window, navigate to the folder where you saved your downloaded ABR file. Click the file to select it, then click "Load."
Photoshop will automatically install the brushes and add them to the bottom of your current brush collection. You should see the new brushes appear in the Brushes panel.

Step 4: Select and Paint with Your New Brushes
To select one of your newly installed brushes, simply click its thumbnail in the Brushes panel. You can also use the [ and ] bracket keys to cycle through your brushes without having to open the panel each time.

If you want to customize the brush settings like hardness, opacity, flow, etc., use the options in the Brush Settings panel (Photoshop 2022) or Properties panel (Photoshop 2023). Experiment with different settings to see how they affect the brush stroke.

To create a new group, click the folder icon at the bottom of the Brushes panel. Then simply drag and drop individual brushes into the folder to move them. You can also nest groups within groups if you want to get really granular with your organization.
I find it helpful to group my brushes by either art style, project type, or brush function. For example, I have separate groups for inking brushes, fabric textures, portrait retouching brushes, and so on. Experiment with different organizational systems to find what works best for your workflow.
Another useful feature is the ability to save your favorite brush settings as a new "preset." If you customize a brush to your liking, click the Create New Brush icon at the bottom of the Brush Settings or Properties panel. This will save all the current settings – including size, hardness, shape dynamics, etc. – as a new brush preset that you can easily access later.
Managing your brush collection does require some manual effort, but trust me, it‘s worth it! There‘s nothing more frustrating than having to hunt through a disorganized list of obscure brush names to find the one you need. Taking a few minutes to sort and label your brushes will save you a ton of time and headache in the long run.
