Top 10 Best Elden Ring Bosses: A Veteran‘s Perspective

As a gaming enthusiast with over 20 years of experience across RPGs and action-adventure titles, I was eagerly anticipating Elden Ring’s launch. And after spending 1000+ hours exploring the Lands Between, I can definitively say that Elden Ring delivers some of the most impressive and memorable boss encounters ever designed.

Combat is the highlight of any Soulsborne game, so having truly standout bosses was key. Drawing upon my expertise playing Demon Souls, Dark Souls (1-3), Bloodborne and Sekiro, I will countdown and analyze my picks for Elden Ring’s top 10 best boss fights, including key data around resistances/weaknesses and strategy tips from my experience.

I evaluated each boss across several criteria:

  • Visual/Art Design: Does the aesthetic design fit within Elden Ring’s world and enhance the scope of battle?
  • Moveset Complexity: How intricate and varied are the boss‘ attacks and abilities to keep players challenged?
  • Arena Utilization: Are environmental effects and spacial elements leveraged smartly?
  • Lore Integration: How well does the boss fight incorporate wider in-game lore and worldbuilding?
  • Music/Presentation: Does the musical score and arena introduction build anticipation and set expectations for an epic encounter?

Let’s dive in!

10. Astel, Naturalborn of the Void

Location: Grand Cloister, Ranni’s Questline
Stats: 11,170 HP / Susceptible To Physical Damage / Immune To Frostbite

I start this list with Astel for a reason – it remains one of Elden Ring‘s most unique and unforgettable visual designs. An ominous violet sky looms over a collapsed colosseum ruin, foreshadowing the aberrant horror to come. Astel itself oozes an otherworldly grace, almost like an alien sea creature.

Once the battle commences, Astel quickly demonstrates diverse magics like gravity projectiles, focus beams and my favorite – an impaling grab attack animation. Its smaller frame makes targeting tricky, demanding constant repositioning. Adding to the challenge is Astel‘s physical damage immunity – forcing melee users to perfectly time their strike windows.

Finally felling this Eldritch anomaly rewards the “Remembrance of the Naturalborn” for crafting some of Elden Ring’s most interesting sorceries/incantations like “Astel Wing” or “Stars of Ruin”. Everything from its visual presentation to rewarding lore plants Astel high up on this list.

9. Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree

Location: Consecrated Snowfield
Stats: 15,966 HP (NG+) / Susceptible To Strike & Fire Damage

Befitting her ancestry’s unicorn iconography, Loretta knight utilizes a very refined, almost regal moveset focusing on ranged attacks and graceful glaive slices.

As a spectral warrior imbued with unalloyed gold, Loretta rides a ghastly steed during phase 1 – evading aggression while bombarding Tarnished with arrows or icicle magic.

Once dismounted, her luminous wings spread unveiling new karate-esque kick flurries and frost vortexes. I found baiting Loretta’s frost magic before punishing with fiery incantations the optimal strategy. Her heavenly design combined with elegant combat flow earns this mysterious spirit warrior a top spot.

8. Godskin Apostle

Location: Divine Tower of Caelid / Windmill Village
Stats: 8,322 HP / Weak To Sleep & Standard Damage Type

Donning possibly Elden Ring’s most disturbing garb, the Godskins immediately captivated me through their enigmatic backstory. And the Apostle variant brings the perfect moveset to match its macabre cloth woven from human flesh.

Wielding a flaming cepter, the Apostle unleashes hellfire through transforming attacks – spin strikes, area eruptions and even a rolling blaze wheel assault. Its delayed incantations caught me off-guard repeatedly even after multiple attempts.

Once weakened, the Apostle resorts to an ultimate sacrificial firestorm finale – coating itself in flames before chasing Tarnished down for one final explosive hug. That flavor text alone should convince you this disturbing zealot deserves a spot.

7. Starscourge Radahn

Location: Redmane Castle, Caelid
Stats: 59,726+ HP / Weak To Scarlet Rot / Resistant To Physical Damage

Like many gamers, I had seen Elden Ring’s marketing hype up Radahn pre-release as an oversized legendary hero turned mindless beast – setting lofty expectations. Yet the actual intro sequence of anxious warriors awaiting Radahn’s arrival at Redmane Castle immediately hooked me. And when the towering monster landed from orbit, it became clear the hype was warranted.

As an archer build I kept distance, peppering him with Scarlet Rot arrows between gravital projectile dodges. The joy of watching Radahn physically wither from my decays while his armor crumbles really sold his tragic lore. Eventually scoring the final hit on this titan felt like felling a mountain. An all-timer boss fight through sheer scale and spectacle!

6. Morgott, The Omen King

Location: Leyndell Royal Capital
Stats: 16,369 HP / Weak To Strike Damage / Multiple Status Resistances

Having faced Margit back in Limgrave, I thought I knew what to expect from returning ruler Morgott. Yet walking into the royal capital’s chambers only for Morgott’s cursed horns to sprout amidst fanfare drove home his tortured role. This stark contrast between regality and revulsion defines the Omen King.

As an agile sword wielder mixing delayed strikes, fiery knives and relentless chains, Morgott echoes the gameplay philosophy that made Isshin Sword Saint such a climatic challenge in Sekiro. Once you shatter Morgott’s holy cloak in phase 2, his attacks grow even quicker with smoldering aggression. Beating the legitimate but reviled king took every ounce of concentration – a war of attrition requiring perfect reactions.

5. Dragonlord Placidusax

Location: Farum Azula
Stats: 23,508 HP / Weak To Both Types of Lightning Damage

Hidden away as an optional secret boss in secluded ruins, Placidusax instantly earned the #5 spot once his weathered dragon visage emerged from beyond time amidst a raging storm. Just a harrowing silhouette at first, lightning suddenly reveals his mottled winged splendor – an ancient mythic beast.

With four heads to track and massive coverage attacks like lightning projectile breaths or dive-bombs, survival demands awareness. In phase 2 he channels crimson lightning through sublime practiced motions – contrasting earthy aggression against vibrant glows streaking the dreary skies. The dynamic backdrop polarizing Placidusax’s grounded attacks with aerial diving assaults stays unforgettable.

4. Maliketh, The Black Blade

Location: Crumbling Farum Azula
Stats: 15,844 HP / Weak To Strike Damage / 50% Physical Damage Negation

Destined Death incarnate, the lithe wolfish assassin Malekith flows between phases wielding a murderous dagger and acrobatic aggression. Even avoiding his initial diving grapple attack proves challenging given the arena’s verticality and Malekith’s deceptive speed.

Once enough health depletes, Malekith envelops said dagger in Death cursed flames – granting lifesteal properties equal to the challenge spike. Here he becomes a blurred tempest, effortlessly catching panic dodges with delayed dagger combos mingled with dark magic explosions. This enhanced moveset pushed my reflexes to their limits requiring flawless reactions.

The synergy between Maliketh’s feral moveset with Destined Death buffs forced absolute focus – making each narrow victory all the more adrenaline-fueled and rewarding.

3. Malenia Blade of Miquella

Location: Haligtree Plaza, Elphael
Stats: 28,729 HP / Multiple Damage Resistances / Passively Heals from Landed Attacks

Regardless of skill level, anyone who has played Elden Ring knows Lady Malenia’s infamy. As blade of cursed lord Miquella, Malenia wields flowing speed, unmatched aggression and healing abilities forcing sharp reactions – relishing trading damage received to regain vitality.

Her Waterfowl Dance holds particular notoriety for instantly slaying under-leveled or complacent challengers via a series of teleporting slashes. In fact, merely surviving this whirling blade flurry demands equal parts luck and skill from even veterans on early attempts.

Once her scarlet flower blooms in phase 2, Malenia ups tempo even further – chaining lengthier combos with Scarlet Rot explosions ensuring constant pressure. Toppling this goddess of the accursed after countless attempts proved one of my proudest Soulsborne achievements.

2. Godfrey/Hoarah Loux

Location: Leyndell, Royal Capital
Stats: 30,049 HP / Parryable Moveset / High Damage Reduction

Featuring perhaps Elden Ring’s most visually spectacular phase transition, the Erdtree’s first Elden Lord Godfrey dominates with raw strength through his axe before becoming warrior chieftan Hoarah Loux.

Initially Godfrey pressures Tarnished with charging axe slams to force errors he can capitalize through delayed stomp quakes and vertical leaping smashes. His lumbering tells bait impatience.

Once health bars deplete, Godfrey dramatically discards his armaments to draw on warrior spirit for a riveting cutscene – worthy of a Game of Thrones character evolution. Bursting with primordial aggression, Hoarah Loux pursues opponents for brutal fist flurries, charging tackles and jumping piledrivers.

This multi-phase contrast between armed regal ruler and vicious unarmed veteran stuck with me long after finally conquering both phases without using flasks on my paladin build. Well-earned victory.

1. Radagon of the Golden Order/Elden Beast

Location: Elden Throne
Stats:

  • Radagon: 15,780 HP / Multiple Damage Resistances
  • Elden Beast: 52,551 HP / Resists Standard Damage / Vulnerable to Physical

Beyond acting as gateway encountering prerequisite for the game’s ultimate ending, Radagon and Elden Beast together represent the crowning achievement of Elden Ring’s ambitious boss design ideals. Radagon himself evokes echoes of Dragonslayer Ornstein through his fiery hammer and lightning spear moveset – rewarding fundamentals like spacing and timing deflections.

Yet the real star emerges once Radagon disperses into flickeringRunes, coalescing into a resplendent humanoid amalgamation unveiling the Elden Beast. This stellar creature almost resembles a hybrid angel mermaid fish, twisting elegantly through aqua projectiles before interspersing holy dive bombs and melee attacks.

The sheer stark atmospheric contrast moving from Radagon’s terranean sanctum into a night sky domain chasing the glowing Elden Beast stole my breath away on first sight. And the multi-stage marathon battle tested every skill learned across my Lands Between sojourn – ultimately crowning my Tarnished’ Elden Lord upon victory.

From visual magnificence to dense lore implications, Radagon and Elden Beast combined to deliver an unforgettable capstone encounter befitting FromSoftware’s magnum opus.

Across criteria emphasizing compelling presentation, intense challenge and worldbuilding ties, Elden Ring’s legacy contains not just one or two but at least ten supreme tier boss encounters. My ranked list focused primarily on replay value judging how often fond memories of these battles still linger.

Of course difficulty perception remains subjective based on chosen build, summon usage and more. But anyone who has toppled the above bosses likely agrees on their dense depth compelling mastery. And for the few I may have overlooked or underrated – please convince me otherwise in the comments!
