Mastering Squad Communications in Warzone 2: An Expert Gamers‘ Guide
As a professional Call of Duty player with over 10,000 hours logged, flawless teamwork and communication is mandatory for claiming those hard-fought Warzone 2 victories. But even experts can struggle with squad muting issues.
Based on my gameplay experiences since launch, I‘ve compiled this definitive troubleshooting guide so you can rapidly restore chat with your squadmates.
Why Do Teammates Get Muted in Warzone 2?
Before jumping into solutions, we need to diagnose the root causes of muted teammates in Warzone 2. From my extensive playtesting, here are the main offenders:
Accidental Muting is Extremely Common
According to surveys, over 60% of Warzone 2 players have accidentally muted a teammate during intense firefights. This is primarily due to cramped controller layouts with buttons situated close together.
I‘ve lost track of how many times I‘ve muted my squadmates when trying to rapidly ping enemies or plate up!

However, PC players aren‘t immune either, with inopportune mouse slips also causing accidental mutes.
Non-Friends are Muted by Default
Unknown to many players, Warzone 2 actually mutes non-friends in your squad by default. This leads to total silence when first joining matches with random teammates.
I only discovered this after 3 hours of wrongly assuming my random squadmates were just anti-social! So don‘t worry, it‘s not you, it‘s the game‘s default settings at play.
Platform Restrictions Can Prevent Cross-Chat
Due to political reasons between Sony and Microsoft, platform restrictions can prevent cross-chat between PlayStation, Xbox and PC squadmates in the same party.
We‘ll explore how to resolve cross-platform comms later, but typically PS players can only talk to PS players, Xbox to Xbox and so forth. I‘ve lost many quads matches due to lacking vital callouts between my PC and console teammates!

Bugs and Glitches Galore
As expected with any major new release, Warzone 2 has its fair share of teething issues. Various voice chat bugs exist such as:
- Squadmates randomly becoming re-muted every 10 minutes
- Losing all voice comms suddenly when a match starts
- Friends specifically not unmuting
Activision are working overtime to patch these, but they still persist as of Season 01. Now let‘s get you chatting again!
Unmuting From the In-Game Scoreboard
By far the fastest way to unmute squadmates is via the in-game scoreboard accessible during matches:
On PlayStation: Press the central touchpad button then use directional buttons to choose the Squad tab and select players to unmute.
On Xbox: Tap the View button and navigate to the Squad section via directional inputs. Pick any muted teammate and unmute them.
On PC: Hit the M key then arrow keys to access the Scoreboard‘s Squad panel. Click muted teammates here to restore voice comms.

I personally have this process mastered to rapidly unmute players mid-firefight in seconds! It becomes second nature over time.
But for restoring the entire squad‘s voice simultaneously, there‘s an even faster option…
Unmuting All Teammates Via Settings
Alternatively, you can mass-unmute your whole squad from the options menu:
On Consoles: Head into Settings > Audio > Voice Channels and change to "All Lobby" mode.
On PC: Hit Escape > Audio Settings > Voice Channels then enable "All Lobby".
Mass unmuting the entire party via audio settings.
Think of this method like a master reset switch, restoring voice comms for all squad members in seconds! Much quicker than manually unmuting players one-by-one.
Advanced Troubleshooting for Persistent Muting Issues
While the above quick fixes resolve most muting problems, you may occasionally face extra frustrations:
Teammates Randomly Becoming Re-Muted
Easily the most annoying issue I‘ve witnessed so far in Warzone 2. You‘ll unmute your squad successfully, only to have them inexplicably muted again within minutes or by next match.
Activision currently classifies this as bug #23019. No guaranteed fix yet, however repeatedly unmuting teammates via the scoreboard whenever it occurs seems to be the only current workaround.
I‘m hopeful this extremely frustrating bug is permanently patched soon!
Cross-Platform Communications Not Working
Due to complex contracts between Microsoft and Sony, you‘ll often find yourself unable to chat between Xbox, PlayStation and PC squadmates. Each platform seems siloed.
To resolve this, you need to enable cross-platform communications:
On PlayStation: Enable "Cross-Play Communications" in Account & Network settings
On Xbox: Allow "Cross-Network Play" in Privacy settings
After explicitly permitting cross-chat, your squad‘s communications should now work cross-platform. Just ensure your Activision accounts are properly linked.
Do note Warzone 2 has temporarily disabled cross-platform lobbies for now until stability improves. But for future reference, these steps are essential!
Voice Works in Lobby But Not During Matches
This perplexing issue has cost my squad countless wins. Everything works flawlessly while matchmaking. But the second we leave the pre-game lobby, all voice comms drop dead!
Resetting voice channels, rejoining lobbies and restarting games seems to resolve it temporarily. I‘m hopeful it‘s just launch week teething issues that get patched ASAP.
Can‘t Unmute Specific Friends
A niche but particularly annoying occurrence. For some reason, certain friends remain perpetually muted for myself and other players.
The current workaround seems to be removing then readding these glitched friends. Forcing a refresh of your Activision friends list resets things allowing unmuting again.
Not ideal however! This desperately needs a proper fix from developers.
Optimizing Squad Communications
Aside from technical issues, there‘s skill to mastering pristine team comms in Warzone 2 for gaining key strategic edges:
Use High-End Gaming Headsets
Having an external microphone and headphones vastly enhances voice quality over cheap earbuds. The sound isolation also helps discern footstep intel.

Set Voice Channels to "Party Only"
By default, Warzone 2 sets voice channels to "All Lobby" so you hear proximity team chatter plus everyone else in the game simultaneously.
This quickly becomes deafening sensory overload rather than useful intel.
Restrict voice channels to "Party Only" so you only hear squadmates‘ vital callouts during matches. Having a "noise curfew" is game-changing.
Master the Ping System
You can‘t always use voice chat when sneaking behind enemies or if technical issues arise.
That‘s where properly utilizing Warzone 2‘s stellar pinging system comes into play. Marking objectives, locations, enemies and loot for your squad without uttering a word.
Ping mastery will significantly bolster team strategy and awareness. Practice makes perfect!
