Was Cal Kestis a Sith?

Hey there fellow Star Wars fan! My name‘s Terry and I‘m a huge geek when it comes to all things gaming, streaming, and of course, Star Wars lore. Today I wanted to dive deep into an intriguing question surrounding one of the franchise‘s newest Jedi heroes – could Cal Kestis eventually succumb to the dark side and become a Sith? There‘s been lots of speculation amongst the fan community, so follow me below as I try to get to the bottom of this debate.

Who is Cal Kestis?

For those who might not be familiar, Cal Kestis made his debut as the main protagonist of the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. He‘s a pretty awesome character – a former Padawan who managed to escape the initial execution of Order 66 as a young teen. The game picks up 5 years later, with Cal hiding from the Empire while trying to complete his Jedi training and reconnect with the Force.

Throughout the game, we get to see Cal evolve from survivor to the last hope of restoring the Jedi Order. And thanks to some superb voice acting and mo-cap work, Cal also shows a ton of personality with a blend of wit, empathy and bottled-up trauma that makes him instantly likeable. He‘s a complex character dealing with some heavy stuff from his past, which is partly why fans have latched on to debating his potential future – specifically whether Cal‘s destiny ends with him turning to the dark side.

Now I won‘t rehash Cal‘s entire backstory here, but let‘s quickly recap some key facts about his past:

  • Born on Bracca, inducted into the Jedi Order as an infant
  • Assigned to Master Jaro Tapal once the Clone Wars broke out
  • Managed to escape Order 66 at 13 years old thanks to Master Tapal‘s sacrifice
  • Spent the next 5 years hiding his Force abilities while working as a scrapper
  • Events of the game force Cal to reawaken his powers and complete his training

So with that quick profile out of the way, let‘s dive into the core question at hand:

Does Cal Exhibit Any Sith-Like Tendencies?

When analyzing Cal‘s personality and actions throughout Fallen Order, he mostly adheres to the tenets of the light side and Jedi Code fairly consistently. For example:

  • Cal puts himself at great risk to help others in need, showing compassion.
  • He rejects killing defenseless foes, showing mercy – something forbidden by the Sith.
  • He resists temptation when exploring dark side nexus points like Dathomir and an ancient tomb.

However, some counterpoints suggest Cal could still be seduced based on:

  • His trauma and isolation wearing down his spirit over time
  • Lingering anger/grief over his Master‘s death that he fails to properly process
  • A subtle arrogance and recklessness emerging as he gains more power

But overall, Cal makes choices and exhibits behavior aligned with the light side in Fallen Order. He doesn‘t display any clear tendencies of the typical Sith traits like cruelty, domination or manipulation.

Ominous Visions of a Dark Side Future

One of the more interesting plot points surrounding Cal‘s potential fate comes on Dathomir, when he‘s exposed to an eerie vision showcasing one possible dark side path:

  • In this vision, Cal has taken on a role similar to the Empire‘s Inquisitors
  • He‘s shown training acolytes in the ways of the Sith and dark side
  • The vision represents a version of Cal that embraced the darkness and perverted his Jedi training

This unnerving sequence seems to suggest that while Cal ultimately rejects this future so far, it‘s still a very real threat he could succumb to one day. Maybe not even willingly, but corrupted over time by trauma and isolation. It‘s definitely an effective storytelling device to sow some compelling doubts in the player‘s mind regarding Cal‘s destiny.

The Mysterious, Ominous Facial Tattoo

Cal sports a pretty intense facial tattoo that has led some fans to speculate about a hidden connection to the Sith:

Tattoo Location Associated Group
Face Sith or Dark Force Users

But based on current information, this ink seems to be just standard branding from when Cal was indentured as a scrapper on Bracca. A practical tattoo required for his dangerous line of work. Though some interesting food for thought on whether this brand could take on more symbolic meaning down the line. Or, does merely having the tattoo destine Cal towards the darkness in some self-fulfilling way? Lots to ponder!

Falling to the Dark Side Despite Training

While Cal finishing Fallen Order firmly on the light side, the broader Star Wars lore provides many examples of Jedi faltering even after years of experience and training:

  • Count Dooku – Jedi Master turned Sith Lord
  • Anakin Skywalker – The prophesied Chosen One turned Darth Vader
  • Atris – Jedi historian of the Mandalorian Wars pulled toward the dark side through bitterness/arrogance

Point being, the dark side often tempts and ensnares even the most disciplined masters. It‘s a constant, no matter how skilled one becomes. So while unlikely, Cal falling prey to it‘s lure many years later in some moment of vulnerability is definitely not off the table yet.

The Developer Perspective

While the story group at Lucasfilm plays things close the chest, the team behind Jedi: Fallen Order at Respawn Entertainment have provided some useful insight into their approach with Cal:

  • They want to develop Cal across multiple games, showing his evolution over years.
  • The dark side temptation is meant to always be there as a theme, to maintain drama and tension.
  • But they have no current plans for Cal to actually become a Sith.
  • That said, they aren‘t ruling anything out yet either for future games.

So in summary, it sounds like they purposefully left Cal‘s destiny ambiguous moving forward. The temptation will always loom large regardless, but becoming a Sith is not inevitable.

My Takeaway

Looking at all the available information both in canon and from the developers, I don‘t see anything conclusive yet that says Cal Kestis is fated to become a Sith down the road. By the events of Fallen Order, he seems firmly entrenched in the light side despite some close brushes with darkness.

For me, I always prefer characters who maintain agency and carve their own path, rather than a predetermined destiny. So I‘m hopeful Cal continues resisting the dark urges as he moves forward with restoring the Jedi Order. But the again, if done right, it would also be pretty darn compelling to watch this optimistic, good-natured hero fall inch-by-inch into shadow. Either way, I can‘t wait to see where the storytellers take Cal next!
