Unlocking the Rarity Tiers in Murder Mystery 2

As an avid Roblox MM2 player and item trader, I‘ve become fascinated by the complex rarity classification system that determines weapon values in this iconic murder mystery game. With new players joining every day, I want to provide the definitive guide to MM2‘s tiers of rarity – from common starter weapons to near-unobtainable unique relics.

A Brief History of MM2

For context, here‘s a quick background on MM2 itself: initially created in 2014 by developer Nikilis as a successor to the original Murder Mystery on Roblox, MM2 has grown over the past 8 years into one of the most popular and well-loved games on the platform.

The premise is classic: in each round, one player is the Murderer, armed with knives, while the rest are Innocents scrambling to survive. One Innocent spawns with a gun to fight back. The Murderer must eliminate all Innocents without being killed themselves to win.

What sets MM2 apart is the staggering variety of cosmetic knives, guns, pets and effects unlockable through gameplay. Let‘s break down the rarity tier system that determines how coveted and valuable each item is…

Rarity Tier Overview

MM2 classifies all weapons and cosmetics into a strict rarity hierarchy. Rarer tiers obviously have lower chances of being obtained from the game‘s loot box crates. An item‘s tier also heavily influences its trading value and prestige. From most common to rarest, the rarity tiers are:

  • Common
  • Uncommon
  • Rare
  • Epic
  • Legendary
  • Godly
  • Ancient
  • Vintage
  • Unique

Below I‘ll profile each tier in detail with examples, stats and trading advice:

Common (Grey)

As the starter tier with infinite stock, Common items have a 100% chance to unbox from crates that contain them. Most players will acquire multiples of any given Common item over time. Tradable Commons like Shuriken and Plasmite are essentially worthless.

The only real use for duplicate Commons is crafting them into shards to slowly work towards creating Legendaries/Godlies. Some noteworthy Common weapons:

  • Default Knife – The plain knife first given for free
  • Snowflake – A basic throwing knife
  • Xbox Knife – Free gift for Xbox players

Commons are plentiful and have little trading value

Uncommon (Green)

Slightly better than Commons, Uncommons have roughly a 15% unbox rate from their crates. They can take a few tries to obtain. Izak Sniper Rifle, Green Pumpkin and Checkered are examples of Uncommons.

While still easy to get, Uncommons can at least be traded profitably for other Uncommons to complete sets. Traders usually exchange 2-3 Commons per Uncommon.

Rare (Blue)

The Rare tier items have approximately a 10% chance when unboxing crates. Rares like Fang, Splash, and Universe take noticeably more luck/credits to acquire compared to Uncommons.

Rares are the first tier considered worth trading up for. They can bring 2-3 Uncommons in trades, or even low-value Limiteds from smarter traders. All players should aim to collect top Rares like Prism, Vampire, Scratch and Skool.

Epic (Purple)

Epic rarity items have an estimated 5% unbox rate, making them tougher to obtain through crates. Epic cosmetics like the Purple Pumpkin effect or keyboard and phone pets are very cool flexes.

Notable knives in Epic tier are Prismatic, Webbed, Rune, and the gorgeous Epic Knife effect itself. Epics can fetch as much as 5-6 Rares in trades from collectors looking to upgrade their inventories.

Legendary (Red)

We‘re getting into prestige territory now. Legendaries have a slim 3% unbox chance, meaning it takes serious luck or persistence to land them from crates. Red items like Vampire Gun, Laser, Icebreaker and Battle Axe are extremely popular.

Their high demand results in Legendaries trading for multiple Epics or a pile of Rares totaling 10-12 smalls. I love showing off my Beggar‘s Legendary Dagger in rounds – it really impresses new players.

Godly (Magenta)

The Godly tier contains some of MM2‘s most iconic and powerful-looking weapons. With only a 0.15% chance to unbox, Godlies are costly to obtain just through crates alone. Trading up is the way to go.

Godlies can bring insane value in trades – often 15+ decent Rares for mid-tier Godlies like Heat, Tides, Saw and Shark. While relatively cheaper than Ancient+ tiers, serious Godlies like Luger, Logchopper and Eternal still trade for dozens of small collectibles.

Ancient (Violet)

The magnificent Ancient rarity contains only 4 extremely rare weapons – Elderwood Scythe, Elderwood Revolver, Eternal IV knife, and Logchopper axe. Ancient items are preceded only by Unique in prestige.

To have a 0.035% chance of unboxing an Ancient weapon is practically lottery odds. Even the "cheapest" Ancient like Elderwood Revolver demands huge trades worth 60-100+ smaller Godlies and collectibles.

The Eternal IV, Elderwood Scythe, and Logchopper are serious endgame goals for diehard MM2 collectors willing to trade entire inventories to obtain one.

Vintage (Yellow)

Vintage items are no longer obtainable by any normal means. These were weapons and cosmetics that existed in the early days of MM2 but have since been retired from the loot pool by the developers.

Their limited quantity makes Vintage items quite valuable to modern collectors. Popular Vintages include Cowboy, Phaser, Ghost, and the haunting Vintage Laser.

Vintage values range based on age and demand. For example, Ghost Knife trades for around 25 smalls, while Cowboy can demand 45+ smalls from the right collector. Vintages are a prestigious flex.

Unique (Orange)

This fabled tier contains absurdly rare items handcrafted by Nikilis and awarded to select influencers or via private giveaways. There are only a handful of confirmed Unique weapons in existence.

The most iconic Unique is of course Nik‘s Scythe, the first Godly ever added to MM2 and Nikilis‘ personal scythe. Its power and rarity make it one of the most coveted items by top collectors.

Other largely unseen Uniques like Overseer Gun, Corrupt Knife, and Rune obtain such incredible offers that owning one essentially means you‘ve "won" at collecting MM2 items.

Analyzing the Rarity Market

Understanding item rarity tiers and relative values is crucial for traders looking to profit in MM2. When a new crate or seasonal event arrives, items from higher tiers naturally spike in demand and value.

Smart traders invest heavily in newly released Epics, Legendaries and Godlies during the initial hype period. These items can easily double in value within days of appearing, allowing for lucrative flipping opportunities.

Meanwhile, savvy collectors know to sit on Vintages and Ancients as their limited supplies and prestige make their values invulnerable to market crashes over time. Patience pays off tremendously when trading up to the rarest tiers.

Comparisons With Other Roblox Games

MM2‘s clearly defined rarity system stands out as more nuanced and detailed than many other popular Roblox titles. For example, Adopt Me pets have just 4 main tiers:

  • Common
  • Uncommon
  • Rare
  • Legendary

Likewise, Roblox Islands weapons utilize only:

  • Common
  • Uncommon
  • Rare
  • Epic

MM2 adding 5 more grades of rarity beyond Epic introduces granularity that keeps item values interesting and drives collecting further. I believe MM2‘s blueprint should serve as the model for rarity systems in future Roblox games.

The tiers are accessible enough that most new players can quickly obtain Uncommons and Rares to start trading up, while the near-unattainable Ancients/Uniques give top players aspirational goals to strive towards. It‘s a beautifully balanced scarcity system.

Investing in MM2‘s Future

As a long-time MM2 aficionado, I firmly believe demand and prices for rare items will continue rising over the coming years as more players get invested in collecting.

The developers continue releasing spectacularly-designed new Godlies, Ancients, Chromas, pets and effects that captivate the community. With each major update, hype spikes and veterans scramble to acquire the next hot limited.

My advice to fellow MM2 collectors is to stay selective when trading, build your inventory of small collectibles, and focus on buying into trending items as soon as they emerge while values are cheaper.

MM2 has retained its core playerbase for nearly a decade already. As long as Nikilis keeps the content and cosmetics exciting, I see no reason why the amazing Murder Mystery 2 won‘t continue thriving for years to come.
