What Arma Means?
Hey friend! Let me introduce you to Arma – a groundbreaking series of tactical military shooter games for PC that has earned a passionate following of millions over the past 20 years. This in-depth simulation experience is like no other FPS out there. Let me break it all down for you…
History of the Series
It all started in 2001 when an independent studio called Bohemia Interactive launched Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis. This revolutionary war game delivered expansive open world battlefields and ultra-realistic gameplay to PC. It garnered critical praise and kicked off a new genre of tactical military simulators.
After losing the rights to Operation Flashpoint, Bohemia brought out the official successor in 2006 – Arma: Armed Assault. Arma 2 arrived in 2009, further evolving the platform with a new engine and weapons/vehicles from modern day. 2010 saw the release of Arma 2‘s massive Operation Arrowhead expansion.
In 2013 they reached a new pinnacle with Arma 3, set in the near future across 300km2 of stunning Greek islands. Most recently, Arma Reforger launched in Early Access in May 2022 as a precursor to the upcoming Arma 4.
Across 15+ years, the Arma series has sold over 15 million copies and cemented itself as the premier combined arms war simulator on PC.
Meaning Behind the Name
As mentioned earlier, "Arma" comes from the Latin word for weapons or arms. It was chosen after they lost the naming rights to Operation Flashpoint.
Interestingly, Arma was originally going to be called Armed Assault, according to Arma 3‘s lead designer Ivan Buchta:
"There was also a game called Armored Assault out there at the time, hence we went with ArmA instead to avoid trademark conflict."
So they abbreviated to the fitting Latin term Arma – keeping the military vibe while differentiating themselves in the market. The name sums up the hardcore weapon and vehicle combat at the heart of the gameplay.
Arma‘s Realism Is Unmatched
What really sets Arma apart from other military shooters is the unparalleled realism and attention to detail across every aspect of the platform. Bohemia Interactive worked closely with real military advisors to authentically recreate hundreds of weapons, vehicles, gadgets and gear.
The ballistics modeling accounts for bullet drop and penetration over long distances. Firefights play out slowly and tactically. You have to carefully lead targets to account for bullet travel time. Casual run-and-gunning is a quick path to defeat.
Controlling the diverse array of air, land and sea vehicles adds tremendous depth. As pilot you have to consider weight, fuel, velocity – stalled engines can get you killed. Tanks require calculating shot lead and weak points. The hyper-realistic physics immerse you in warfare.
Massive Open World Sandboxes
A signature of the series is the enormous open world environments that function as flexible sandboxes. The landscapes cover hundreds of square kilometers – most triple-A open world games clock in under 100 km2 in comparison!
For example, Arma 3 gives you over 300 km2 of terrain across the fictional Greek islands of Altis and Stratis. You‘re free to explore dense forests, towering mountains, seaside towns, urban centers, coastlines and more.
Drop AI squads anywhere, set up custom bases and outposts, populate the world with civilians – the possibilities are endless. The immense scale combined with realism makes for unparalleled battlefield experiences.
Highly Customizable Mission Editor
All Arma titles include a built-in mission editor enabling you to quickly generate custom scenarios. Just open up the editor and you can place down any units or objects like ammo crates, buildings. Add triggers and waypoints to define mission objectives and AI behavior.
In minutes you can script up a diverse range of missions – from small fireteam skirmishes to large-scale mechanized assaults. Then experience your scenario from any perspective, whether a soldier on the ground or commander in the sky coordinating the entire battle.
Massive Modding Community
On top of the mission editor, Arma is designed as a highly moddable platform. The games boast awesome communities with thousands of player-created mods available. These introduce new weapons, vehicles, gear, campaigns, gameplay modes and more.
Some of the most popular mods include ACE3, which massively expands realism adding medical systems, ballistics improvements and more. Then there‘s the Chernarus map portraying 225 km2 of fictional open world Eastern Europe. Mods like Wasteland, Battle Royale and Exile introduce radical gameplay innovations on top of the core Arma experience.
This huge modding scene has greatly extended the longevity and variety of things to do in Arma games.
Multiplayer Is Where It Shines
Solo play lets you experience the immense scope and realism that sets Arma apart. But where it really shines is multiplayer, which adds an entirely new dimension of teamwork, planning and coordination with other players.
In coop, you take on specific roles like sniper, demolitionist, pilot and work together to achieve objectives. The scale and complexity means no two battles play out the same. With friendly fire always a concern, discipline and tactics are paramount.
Arma 3‘s multiplayer shines with a revolutionary asymmetric game mode called Zeus. One player takes the role of game master, building out the mission in real-time by placing down units and scripting objectives to create a dynamic cinematic storyline.
Meanwhile other players on the ground react to events as they unfold for a customizable, sandbox experience. The possibilities span stealth raids to all-out war, always under the guidance of the Zeus overseer.
Arma for Military Training
Beyond gaming, the Arma series has become a platform used worldwide by actual militaries for cost-effective training. The ultra-realistic environments and sensor systems allow troops to rehearse various tactics, techniques and procedures.
Bohemia Interactive has worked directly with armed forces through their VBS platform – using Arma assets tailored specially for military training simulations. Trainee pilots can run flight drills in accurate helicopter models. Spec ops teams rehearse infiltrations on virtual recreations of real towns.
This broad use of Arma for military training really demonstrates the impressive authenticity and capabilities of the platform.
Excited for Arma Reforger and the Future
Most recently in May 2022, Bohemia launched Arma Reforger – which gives us our first glimpse at Arma‘s future. It acts as an Early Access precursor to the upcoming Arma 4.
Reforger provides a smaller playable area and limited assets to test out the new Enfusion engine. As a long-time Arma player, I‘m excited to see the graphical and performance upgrades Enfusion will bring to the series!
Over 20 years, Arma has pioneered its own genre of combined arms military simulators. The dedication to authenticity and scope is unparalleled. With the endless mission options and massive modding community, no two sessions play the same.
If you‘re looking for a tactical shooter that will challenge you like no other, I highly recommend giving Arma a try friend! Let me know if you have any other questions.
