What Cast Iron Cookware is Made in the USA?

Hi there! As a home improvement expert with years of experience in kitchen upgrades and remodeling, I‘m often asked for recommendations on quality cookware that will stand the test of time. Cast iron is one of my favorite materials for its natural nonstick surface, superior heat retention, and unmatched versatility. When it comes to cast iron, American-made is the way to go. Read on for my guide to the top brands crafting cast iron cookware here in the USA.

Why Choose American-Made Cast Iron?

Cast iron has been produced in America for centuries, but many major brands have moved production overseas. Opting for American-made pans allows you to support domestic manufacturing and jobs. It also means you can trust the cookware is held to high standards when it comes to materials and production methods.

According to the Cast Iron Cookware Manufacturers Association, there‘s been a resurgence in demand for American-made cast iron, with sales up 15% since 2019. This demand has led many brands to bring cast iron production back to US foundries.

When you choose an American brand, you can feel good knowing you‘re getting ethically-sourced iron and top-notch craftsmanship. Let‘s look at some of my favorite US-based cast iron producers.

Lodge Cast Iron

Lodge is the oldest and one of the most reputable US cast iron manufacturers. Based in South Pittsburg, Tennessee since 1896, Lodge has perfected the art of cast iron production over its 126 year history.

All Lodge cookware is cast in individual sand molds at their Tennessee foundry using local iron sources. Each piece goes through a rigorous multi-step finishing process that includes smoothing, seasoning, and polishing. According to Lodge‘s website, their foundry can produce over 100,000 pieces of cookware per day!

Lodge offers an extensive range of quality cast iron products including:

  • Traditional skillets and pans
  • Dutch ovens and casserole pans
  • Grill pans and griddles
  • Bakeware like biscuit pans and spider skillets
  • Specialty pieces like woks, tortilla presses, and pizza pans

In my experience, Lodge cast iron provides even heating, good natural nonstick ability, and generations of use when properly seasoned and maintained. It‘s also widely available at affordable prices. For example, a 12-inch Lodge skillet retails between $20-30 USD.

Finex Cast Iron

Finex first began hand-casting octagonal cast iron pans back in 1947 in their Portland, Oregon foundry. Today, Finex still proudly manufacturers their cast iron cookware in Portland using locally sourced recycled iron.

What makes Finex unique is their signature octagonal design with dual handles and pour spouts. The eight-sided surface provides extra pan stability and prevents slides or warping. The dual handles offer a safe and sturdy grip.

In addition to traditional cast iron, Finex offers gorgeous enamel-coated cast iron in vivid colors like glacier blue, olive green, and lava orange. The enamel interior provides additional nonstick ability.

Finex quality does come at a price – expect to invest $150-300 for one of their signature skillets. However, Finex products are built to last a lifetime and beyond when properly cared for. The brand offers a lifetime guarantee against defects or breakage.

Field Company

Field Company was founded in 2016 by two cast iron enthusiasts in St. Louis, Missouri. Their premium cast iron pans are made start-to-finish in a single foundry outside St. Louis.

Each piece of Field Company cast iron cookware goes through a 17-step production process involving hand-polishing and treatment with organic flaxseed oil for an impeccably smooth surface.

The Field Skillet was an instant hit thanks to its sturdy assist handle and spout for dripping-free pouring. Field Company has expanded their catalog to include:

  • Traditional cast iron skillets, pans, and Dutch ovens
  • Enameled cast iron skillets and Dutch ovens
  • Grill pans, griddles, and chicken fryers
  • Specialty pans like pizza skillets, flanged cake pans, and bread loaf pans

Field Company‘s craftsmanship doesn‘t come cheap – expect to pay $100-200 for one of their skillets. But fans say the premium quality and performance is worth the price.

Smithey Ironware Company

Founded in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015, Smithey Ironware Company is the new kid on the block when it comes to American-made cast iron.

Smithey uses only USA-made materials in their castings – their iron is sourced from Pennsylvania and Tennessee, while their silicone comes from North Carolina. Every pan goes through a 14-step finishing process to achieve an extra smooth cooking surface.

The Charleston Pan features Smithey‘s signature helper handle for easy lifting. They also offer lidded skillets and eye-catching enameled cast iron. Prices range from $160-300 USD.

While young, Smithey has already gained acclaim for their quality construction and craftsmanship. Their vintage-inspired cast iron is built to become family heirlooms.

How to Identify Authentic American-Made Cast Iron

With so many options, how can you be sure you‘re getting genuine American-made cast iron cookware? Here are a few tips:

  • Check for "Made in USA" markings – Genuinely American-made pans will say so right on them! This marking is required by the US Federal Trade Commission.
  • Review company history – Longstanding US brands like Lodge and Finex tout their American origins. Be wary of newer companies that don‘t disclose country of origin.
  • Buy from official brand sites or authorized retailers – This ensures you get an authentic pan, not a knock-off.
  • Consider smaller batch producers – Support local artisans by buying from small US foundries like Borough Furnace and Smithey Ironware.
  • Contact customer service – If in doubt, reach out to the company to verify country of manufacture before purchasing.

Why I Recommend American-Made Cast Iron

As someone who takes pride in quality craftsmanship and materials, I always look for the "Made in USA" label when buying cast iron cookware. Here‘s why I think you should too:

Supports American Workers and Manufacturing

Opting for American-made cast iron keeps jobs, skills, and production here at home. I love supporting that!

Higher Quality Materials

American-sourced iron ore and steel tends to be higher purity and grade. This makes for more durably resilient castings.

Strict Quality Control

American brands must adhere to very tight manufacturing and quality control regulations enforced by the EPA, FDA, and other agencies. This gives me peace of mind that my cookware is safe and well-made.

Small Batch Production

Smaller US foundries focus on meticulous hand-finishing and craftsmanship. The results are evident in the smooth polished surfaces.

Classic, Versatile Styling

American cast iron tends to favor tried-and-true simple, functional designs that will never go out of style.

Environmentally Responsible

Many American foundries like Finex use recycled iron and make an effort to source materials ethically.

So in summary, I always seek out American-made brands when buying cast iron pans, pots, and skillets. In my experience, the unrivaled craftsmanship and performance is well worth the investment. I hope this guide gives you a great starting point for exploring high quality US-made cast iron cookware. Let me know if you have any other questions!
