What Happened to Former High School Cheerleader Eric Ortiz After His Devastating Brain Injury?
Eric Ortiz was a rising talent in competitive cheerleading, renowned for his athleticism and charisma. But in April 2016, the 18-year-old‘s bright future was devastated in an instant by a traumatic car accident. Ortiz suffered a severe brain injury that left him in a coma, unsure if he would survive. What followed was a grueling yet inspiring multi-year recovery journey that demonstrated the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
Eric Ortiz: A Promising Cheerleading Star on the Rise
By his senior year at St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Kentucky, Eric Ortiz was already making a name for himself in the competitive cheerleading world. He first joined the St. Xavier cheer squad as a sophomore in 2014. It quickly became apparent that Ortiz was no ordinary cheerleader.
With his muscular 5‘9" frame and seemingly gravity-defying athleticism, Ortiz brought immense talent and energy to the team. His teammates and coaches raved about his work ethic, positive attitude, and natural leadership abilities.
Ortiz helped lead the St. Xavier Tigers to back-to-back first place finishes at the National High School Cheerleading Championships in 2014 and 2015. His daring tumbling passes and soaring basket tosses thrilled crowds and judges alike.
“Eric was one of the most gifted cheerleaders I’ve ever coached,” said John Smith, Ortiz’s high school cheer coach. “He had limitless potential in the sport.”
As a senior, Ortiz was fielding scholarship offers from a number of top colleges with elite cheer programs, including the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville. The future looked exceedingly bright for Ortiz to continue cheerleading competitively in college and achieve his dreams in the sport.
A Devastating Car Crash Changes Everything
But in an instant, Ortiz’s entire future was thrown into jeopardy. On April 23, 2016, just weeks before high school graduation, 18-year-old Ortiz was riding in a friend‘s car traveling down a road in Louisville. According to police reports, the driver suddenly lost control at high speed, causing the vehicle to skid off the road and directly into a utility pole.
Ortiz, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the front passenger window on impact. When paramedics arrived on scene, they found Ortiz unconscious and unresponsive in a nearby yard. He was quickly transported to the University of Louisville Hospital in critical condition.
Doctors determined Ortiz had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), likely from forcefully hitting the pole or ground after being thrown from the vehicle. He also sustained facial fractures, lung contusions, and other serious injuries. The violent crash left Ortiz clinging to life.
Traumatic brain injuries like Ortiz’s affect over 2.8 million Americans each year. They can have devastating and lifelong impacts.
To manage Ortiz’s severe brain trauma and swelling, doctors placed him in a medically induced coma in the ICU. For weeks, he remained unresponsive on life support as doctors monitored his condition, unsure if the teen would survive the extensive damage to his brain. His tight-knit family kept vigil, praying for any signs of improvement.
Touch-and-Go Recovery Begins with Small Milestones
Finally, in late May 2016 – over a month after the harrowing accident – Ortiz showed the first faint signs of responsiveness. He opened his eyes briefly, wiggled his toes and fingers on command, and responded to basic verbal cues from doctors. While very small victories, these moments gave hope that Ortiz’s brain was beginning to heal.
In the following months under intensive hospital care, Ortiz’s condition continued to slowly improve:
-
June 2016 – Ortiz follows objects and people with his eyes when stimulated. He is able to slightly move legs and arms on command. Doctors note increased brain activity on neurological tests.
-
July 2016 – Can now grasp and release objects like a tennis ball when placed in his hands. Muscle coordination and control increasing with regular physical therapy. Responds to more complex verbal commands.
-
September 2016 – Ortiz exhibits increased cognition and focus during cognitive therapy activities. Speech is extremely limited, but he can say basic words. Muscle strength has improved enough to sit upright with assistance.
-
November 2016 – 6 months after accident, Ortiz is moved out of ICU as doctors note significant neurological improvement. He is still unable to walk unassisted, but takes steps with a walker and full body support. Speech remains very halting and slurred.
While Ortiz’s recovery was promising, doctors emphasized he still had a very long rehabilitation process ahead to regain basic mobility and speech. But his youth and strong physical health prior to the accident improved his outlook.
Intensive Therapy and Milestones on the Road to Recovery
Ortiz continued to tackle recovery milestones through intensive daily rehabilitation therapy over the next year:
-
February 2017 – Ortiz walks short distances using a walker, but still requires a wheelchair for movement and stability. Speech has improved with therapy but remains difficult to understand for those unfamiliar with his patterns.
-
May 2017 – During a visit to his high school, Ortiz is able to complete a few seated cheerleading moves in his wheelchair – an emotional moment and victory. Balance and coordination have progressed enough to walk unassisted for very short periods.
-
August 2017 – Ortiz attends physical therapy 5x a week to build strength and relearn how to move his body. He is able to slowly walk up stairs holding a handrail. Speech is becoming more coherent through regular speech therapy. Memory improved but focus wanes easily.
-
November 2017 – 18 months after accident, Ortiz is discharged to return home with his family, a major milestone. He will continue outpatient therapies. Balance challenges remain but he can walk with a cane for short distances. Speech has improved markedly but still impacted.
The road to recovery was long and difficult, requiring intense physical, occupational, and speech therapy multiple times per week. Ortiz tackled it all with fierce determination and a positive mindset. He continued to beat projections, showing the inner strength of his spirit and athletic background.
Life After Brain Injury: Continued Recovery and Forward Progress
Since returning home in late 2017, Ortiz has continued intense therapy and treatments to help regain function and manage lasting impacts of his traumatic brain injury. Though daily life activities remain challenging, his mobility has improved steadily through diligent physical therapy:
-
Ortiz can now walk unassisted for moderate distances with improved balance and stability. He utilizes a wheelchair when leaving home for farther excursions. Fine motor skills like writing and typing still require ongoing occupational therapy.
-
Speech is still halting and punctuated by lengthy pauses, but Ortiz can verbally communicate his needs and have back-and-forth conversations. Regular speech therapy focuses on redeveloping vocabulary and sentence structure.
-
Memory, focus and cognition have all improved remarkably over 5+ years of targeted therapies and brain rest. But his processing speed remains delayed and mental fatigue sets in quickly. Doctors believe more gains are possible over time.
Ortiz’s neurologist remains very pleased with his progress and recovery trajectory given the initial dire prognosis after the accident. He still requires regular monitoring and medical care for his brain injury. But his inner drive keeps him actively pursuing new goals:
-
Ortiz graduated high school in 2019 after a year of home studies. He enrolled in online college with plans to pursue sports medicine. He dreams of helping other injury victims recover.
-
Ortiz often does motivational speaking, sharing his story of resilience and recovery with students and injury support groups. He hopes to become a peer mentor.
-
He actively follows cheerleading and is learning adapted cheer techniques he hopes to teach others with disabilities.
Now over 6 years removed from the tragic car crash that nearly took his life, Eric Ortiz continues to impress everyone around him with his positive spirit and perseverance in the face of immense challenge. He is the embodiment of strength and resilience.
