What Happens When You and Lydia Must Part Ways?
My friend, if you‘ve been adventuring across the lands of Skyrim with the brave warrior Lydia as your stalwart companion, you‘ve likely grown quite fond of her sarcastic quips and tank-like presence wading into battle at your side. But alas, there may come a time when you and your housecarl must part ways to seek separate paths.
Fear not, for Lydia can never truly leave your side as Dragonborn. Let‘s delve deep into the mysteries of where Lydia goes when dismissed, how to prevent her untimely demise, and why she remains one of the most beloved followers for us gamers even when we must say goodbye.
Lydia‘s Significance as a Follower
As housecarl to the Thane of Whiterun, the noble Lydia holds a unique station amongst followers. She is bound by oath to serve you, summoning her to your side early in many Dragonborn‘s adventures.
While Lydia has no detailed backstory within Skyrim, the Elder Scrolls wiki [1] speculates she hails from a respected family dedicated to public service. Personally, I‘ve found Lydia‘s sarcasm and no-nonsense attitude provide memorable companionship on the road. She frequently comments on locations we travel to and situations we face, often with wry humor.
With expertise in heavy armor and one-handed weapons, Lydia excels at charging headfirst into the fray and serving as a damage sponge so squishier mages and archers can operate safely. Her tank role is invaluable, and I for one have greatly benefitted from Lydia watching my back.
Where Lydia Goes When You Part Ways
When you dismiss Lydia, she‘ll return to wherever she calls home to await your summons once again. By default, this means returning to her post in Dragonsreach as a housecarl of the jarl.
If you purchased Breezehome in Whiterun and use it as a player home, Lydia may return there instead to keep a watchful eye over your property. Other locations Lydia may retreat to include:
- Jorrvaskr in The Companions headquarters
- Proudspire Manor in Solitude if purchased
- Honeyside in Riften if purchased
- Severin Manor on Solstheim if you own the Dragonborn DLC
Wherever Lydia goes, she‘ll sandbox around that location indefinitely until you reunite and recruit her again.
Rejoining You After Parting Ways
When you seek Lydia out again, she‘ll be eager to get back to adventure. According to fans online [2], if you spent sufficient time fighting alongside Lydia before parting ways, she may even present you with a random enchanted weapon or piece of armor when spoken to again!
I myself was pleasantly surprised when Lydia gifted me a shiny Elven Shield of Peerless Health when I returned to her after many in-game months away. It seems her way of saying "no hard feelings!"
Keeping Lydia Alive and Well-Equipped
Lydia is a capable warrior, but not indestructible. On higher difficulties, enemies can overwhelm and kill her if you‘re not careful. But fear not, there are ways to keep Lydia fighting fit for end-game challenges:
- Provide Lydia with the best heavy armor you can smith/enchant
- Give Lydia health/stamina regeneration enchanted rings
- Choose vampiric drain-focused destruction spells that heal Lydia in combat
- Always keep healing potions on quick slots to use on Lydia
I recommend periodically checking Lydia‘s inventory and equipping any better gear you‘ve acquired. The difference high-level armor makes is significant!
Making Lydia Essential
On PC, you can use console commands to make Lydia essential, preventing any death scenarios:
- Open console by tilting ~
- Click Lydia to get her NPC ID
- Use
setessential <ID> 1to make her essential
For example, setessential a2c8e 1 would make everyone‘s favorite housecarl unkillable.
What if Lydia Dies?
If Lydia falls in battle while following you, any inventory items she was holding will remain on her body. Unfortunately spells like Raise Zombie only temporarily revive NPCs like Lydia.
On PC, clicking Lydia‘s body and using resurrect will bring her back to life. But console players will find Lydia‘s death permanent without modding.
Losing Your Items
This is why Lydia‘s death can be devastating – losing unique quest rewards and artifacts forever! I strongly advise frequently checking Lydia‘s inventory and storing any sentimental or rare items elsewhere.
My rule of thumb is to only let Lydia carry vendor loot I intend to sell soon. That way if the worst happens, I‘m not losing priceless daedric relics.
Bidding Lydia Farewell
When you and Lydia must part ways, know it need not be forever. Reunite with her at any time to pick up your companionship where you left off!
If you require a different sort of follower for a time, Lydia harbors no hard feelings at being dismissed. Here are some popular alternatives to fill Lydia‘s tank role:
| Follower | Skills | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Mjoll the Lioness | Heavy Armor, Two-Handed | Riften |
| Argis the Bulwark | Heavy Armor, One-Handed | Markarth |
| Vorstag | One-Handed, Block, Archery | Markarth |
But few can match Lydia‘s dry wit – she remains one of my favorite followers. I hope these insights help you and Lydia adventure together in good health and good humor! Never be afraid to say goodbye, but always remember to come back.
