Hey friend! Let‘s talk bubble baths

Bubble baths are such a fun way to unwind after a long day. Slipping into a tub of silky bubbles and warm water practically whisks your stresses down the drain. But not all bubble bath products are created equal. Many commercial brands load up their formulas with chemicals that could irritate your skin or worse.

As your home improvement buddy, let me walk you through what to watch out for in your bubble baths and how to make your own safe, soothing bubbles at home. I‘ve renovated my fair share of bathrooms, so trust me – I know how to make bathtime a truly relaxing escape!

Steer clear of these bubble bath ingredients

While scanning ingredient labels, keep an eye out for these concerning chemicals often found in big brand bubble baths:

Sulfates – SLS and SLES

Sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are surfactants that create those luxurious mounds of bubbles. But they can disrupt skin‘s natural moisture barrier and cause irritation, especially for sensitive skin types. SLES may also be contaminated with a potential carcinogen called 1,4-dioxane.

According to a study published in the Journal of Women‘s Health, over 28% of personal care products contained concerning levels of 1,4-dioxane as an impurity from SLES manufacturing processes [1]. Yeah, no thanks!

Formaldehyde

Traces of formaldehyde might be lurking in your bubble bath as a preservative. This chemical is a known human carcinogen that can cause skin reactions like rashes, itching, and swelling [2].

Look out for formaldehyde-releasing preservatives like quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and diazolidinyl urea in ingredient lists.

Parabens

This sneaky preservative gives products a longer shelf life, but parabens are linked to hormone disruption and are generally best avoided. One study detected parabens in 99% of breast tissue samples from cancer patients [3].

While more research is needed, I‘d rather play it safe and look for "paraben-free" on my bubble bath labels.

Artificial fragrances

Have you ever noticed that generic "fragrance" listed as an ingredient? Those mystery scents are usually a chemical cocktail of synthetically created fragrances. Many have been linked to allergic reactions and respiratory irritation [4].

I prefer essential oils for natural (and safer) fragrance in my DIY products. More on that later!

Artificial dyes

No real benefit comes from dyeing bubble baths bright colors with FD&C pigments. In fact, research links artificial dyes to skin irritations and hyperactivity in kids [5].

I always opt for naturally-derived colors like turmeric for golden hues or beet powder for pink tones.

Triclosan

An antimicrobial added to some bubble baths, triclosan has faced scrutiny over antibiotic resistance concerns and its potential as an endocrine disruptor [6].

While the FDA currently approves triclosan use in soap, I prefer to avoid this ingredient when possible.

Healthier bubble ingredients to look for

Luckily, there are plenty of natural, non-toxic ingredients that make fantastic bubble baths without the harsh chemicals:

Castile soap

Castile soap made from saponified oils like coconut and olive makes an awesome gentle bubble bath base. Dr. Bronner‘s is a great creamy liquid castile soap.

Essential oils

Not only do essential oils naturally scent your bath water, many also have therapeutic properties for skin and mood. Try eucalyptus for congestion, lavender for relaxation or tea tree for acne-prone skin.

Epsom salts

Epsom salts ease sore muscles, help reduce inflammation, and gently exfoliate dead skin cells. They won‘t actually make bubbles, but I always add a cup to my baths for the healing benefits!

Natural oils

Plant-based oils like sweet almond, olive and coconut are great for moisturizing skin without harsh chemicals. Try adding a tablespoon to your bubble bath mix.

Oatmeal

Grind up a cup of colloidal oatmeal or quick oats. The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties soothe irritated skin wonderfully.

Sea salts

Sea salts nourish skin with a bounty of minerals while also softening bath water. I like using Dead Sea or Himalayan salts rich in health-boosting minerals.

Baking soda

Baking soda doesn‘t really make bubbles, but it‘s amazing for gently exfoliating and deodorizing skin. Add up to 1 cup to your bath.

Milk

Pour a cup of milk in your bath – the natural proteins and fats are super hydrating for your skin! Powdered milk works too.

Honey

Honey makes a nice antibacterial, hydrating addition to baths. Use about 1-2 tablespoons per bath.

Tips for picking the best bubble bath

Armed with this bubble bath ingredient knowledge, you can start scrutinizing those product labels like a pro!

  • Scan for the nasty ingredients we covered earlier – sulfates, formaldehyde, parabens, artificial dyes and fragrances etc. Avoid products listing these.

  • Seek out bath products highlighting the natural plant-based ingredients recommended above like castile soap, essential oils and herbal extracts.

  • Typically, the fewer total ingredients, the better. This often indicates a more natural formula.

  • Watch out for sneaky trademarked fragrances like "Fragrance X", "Perfume Y" – these still likely contain synthetic scents.

  • Be wary of generic terms like "preservative", "thickener", "foil" – ask for specific ingredients.

  • Look at order – ingredients are listed from highest to lowest volume. Those higher up make up more of the product.

Make bubbles at home with DIY bath recipes

If you want 100% control over what goes in your bubble bath, make your own!

I love concocting my own luxurious DIY bath formulas using nourishing ingredients. Nothing beats a relaxing soak in a tub full of bubbles I created myself.

Here are a couple of my favorite homemade bubble bath recipes to try:

Liquid gold bubble bath

Make your skin silky smooth with this combination of hydrating oils.

Ingredients:

  • 1⁄2 cup liquid Castile soap
  • 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 5-10 drops essential oil for scent (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Mix the Castile soap and oils together until fully blended.
  2. Add essential oil if using and mix again.
  3. To use, pour 2-3 tablespoons under warm running bath water and stir to activate bubbles.

Oatmeal cookie bubble bath

Get your bubbles and skincare all in one with this nourishing formula.

Ingredients:

  • 1⁄2 cup liquid Castile soap
  • 1⁄4 cup colloidal oatmeal
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 drops cinnamon essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Stir together all ingredients thoroughly in a bowl until combined.
  2. Scoop out about 1⁄4 cup of the mixture into your warm bath and swish around to get those yummy bubbles going!

Bubble-free alternatives for sensitive skin

For those with easily irritated skin, bubbles may not be the best option. Luckily there are still plenty of ways to enjoy a luxurious, soothing bath without suds.

  • Bath oils – Add a few tablespoons of moisturizing oils like jojoba, avocado or sweet almond oil right to your bath water for hydrated skin without the need for bubbles.

  • Bath milks – Mix powdered milk with a liquid oil and vanilla or lavender for a creamy, moisture-rich bath.

  • Bath teas – Tie up soothing herbs like chamomile, lavender and oatmeal in a muslin bag and let the aromatic qualities infuse your bath water.

  • Bath melts – These moisturizing discs are packed with cocoa butter, shea butter, oils and essential oils. Simply drop one in your bath as it fills.

  • Epsom salt soaks – 1-2 cups of Epsom salts help ease muscle tension, reduce swelling, and replenish magnesium levels when absorbed through skin.

  • Shower steamers – These aromatherapy tablets release essential oils and soothing vapor when placed under shower stream.

Now that you know what to look for (and what to avoid) in your bubble baths, you can upgrade your bathing routine with truly nourishing products free of harsh chemicals. Scan those labels, make your own custom blends, and treat yourself to relaxing bathtime experiences.

Your skin and your mindset will thank you after a nice soak! If you have any other home improvement or DIY questions, let me know – I‘m always happy to help out a friend. Now go get your bubble on!
