Mastering the Art of 3-Betting Out of Position in Poker

Hi poker enthusiasts! Today I want to dive deep into a powerful weapon that belongs in every poker player‘s arsenal – the almighty 3-bet from out of position.

While most players dread being out of position, 3-betting from the blinds can actually be an opportunity to play aggressively and take down pots. Let‘s break down everything you need to know about 3-betting OOP.

What Does "Out of Position" Mean?

First, a quick refresher on position. When you are out of position (OOP) in poker, it means you have to act before the other player(s) left in the hand on all post-flop streets.

For example, if you call from the small blind and the button raises, you are OOP on the button. On the flop, turn, and river the button will get to act after you every time.

Most players want to avoid being OOP since it limits the information you get from your opponents‘ actions. However, 3-betting from OOP can still be very profitable if done correctly.

Many players open from late position with a wide range of hands like JTs, 97s, A5s etc. These hands lose significant value when they whiff the flop out of position.

Building Pots with Speculative Hands

Suited connectors and small pocket pairs flop very well when they hit, but whiff completely when they don‘t. By 3-betting with these hands OOP, you inflate the pot and give yourself a chance to realize their equity.

For example, 3-betting 54s OOP and flopping a straight or flush draw gives you implied odds to continue profitably. Whereas just flatting in position may not give you the right price to chase your draw.

Bluffing for Dead Money

Another reason to 3-bet light is when the blinds are very unlikely to defend. Many players will fold routinely to 3-bets from the blinds, allowing you to pickup the pot preflop with any two cards.

Scanning for these types of players and targeting them for light 3-bets is very profitable. You can turn a small gain preflopl into a big win over the long run.

Preventing Opponents from Leveraging Position

Good regulars love to open from late position to leverage their postflop edge. By 3-betting light from the blinds, you prevent them from seeing cheap flops in position and then playing perfectly against you after the flop.

While 3-betting light has risks, it‘s better than passively calling from OOP every time and allowing these players to consistently outplay you postflop.

Balancing Your Ranges

Lastly, it‘s important to 3-bet light simply to keep a balanced range and avoid becoming predictable. If opponents know you only 3-bet QQ/KK/AA, they can easily exploit you.

As a general rule…

• Against a minimum open, 3x-3.5x is a good size from SB and BB
• Against a full open, 2.5-3x the original raise size plays well
• Size up with your premium value hands to build bigger pots

You also need to adjust your sizing based on your opponent. Against players who call 3-bets very wide, you can use a smaller sizing since they are unlikely to fold anyways.

But against nittier players who fold often to 3-bets, make your light 3-bets larger to force more folds. Pay close attention to their tendencies.

Prime Spots for 3-Betting Light from OOP

Now let‘s look at some of the best spots to put in light 3-bets from out of position:

BB vs Button Open

This is one of my favorite spots to 3-bet bluffs like 76s or 53s. The button has such a wide range that you can often force folds immediately and claim the pot preflop.

Against passive players I may opt for a smaller sizing around 2.5x-3x to entice calls. But against aggros I‘ll pump it up to 4x and force them into a really tough decision.

SB vs Cutoff Open

Here I‘m looking to 3-bet a polarized range for protection. I‘ll either 3-bet strong hands like QQ+/AK for value or total air like 32o as a bluff.

The cutoff opens very wide so I have to protect my SB calling range by applying pressure. A 3x raise gets the job done nicely to force out their weakest hands.

BB vs MP Open

Facing an early position open from MP, the BB is a great spot to 3-bet your strongest hands like AA/KK/AQ for value as they will continue with a wide range.

It‘s also a good spot to 3-bet complete air against tight players that are only opening strong hands from EP. A pot sized 4x raise can take it down pre against their premium range.

Balancing Your 3-Betting Range

To prevent your 3-betting range from becoming too imbalanced and exploitable, you need to ensure you are mixing in:

• Value Hands: Strong holdings like big pairs, AK, AQ that you want action from. Make sure to size up with these hands.
• Speculative Hands: Suited connectors and small pairs that play well postflop but need implied odds.
• Pure Bluffs: Total air hands you can 3-bet and fold to a 4-bet when called.

• 3-betting too frequently and spewing off your stack without picking good spots. Make sure it‘s +EV!
