What is Sub-Zero‘s Real Name? An In-Depth Look at the Iconic Mortal Kombat Character

As an avid gamer and Mortal Kombat fanatic, Sub-Zero has always been one of my personal favorite characters. His ice cold powers, mysterious backstory, and iconic costume make him instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with the legendary fighting game franchise. But what lies behind the mask? Let‘s take a frosty dive into the intricate history and lore behind one of MK‘s most beloved fighters.

A Cryomancer‘s Legacy: The Lin Kuei Warriors

To understand Sub-Zero, you first need to know a bit about the Lin Kuei. This elite clan of Chinese assassins trained generation after generation of stealthy killers, including the cryomancer bloodline that would eventually produce Sub-Zero.

Cryomancers possess the innate supernatural ability to freeze objects and create weapons made of solid ice. This cryokinesis makes them exceptional and deadly warriors. Power over ice also gives rise to the codename "Sub-Zero" which is bestowed upon the clan‘s top cryomancer agent.

According to Mortal Kombat lore, the Lin Kuei were formed in China over 4,000 years ago. Historians first chronicled them in 1516, but they likely existed even earlier. The Lin Kuei operated secretly for centuries, playing a role in major historical events like the Opium Wars.

Fast forward to modern day, and the Lin Kuei had expanded into an international network of clandestine assassins. Their reputation for stealth and efficiency was unmatched. Contract killing was their specialty.

It was under the Lin Kuei‘s cold tutelage that the first Sub-Zero was born.

Bi Han – The Elder Sub-Zero

In the 1992 tournament depicted in the original Mortal Kombat, the identity of Sub-Zero was a mystery. It wasn‘t until Mortal Kombat II that Sub-Zero unmasked himself, revealing his Chinese heritage and ice-based abilities.

This Sub-Zero‘s real name was Bi Han (Chinese: 必寒). He was a cutthroat member of the Lin Kuei and their top cryomancer assassin. Wielding his powers for evil, he had no qualms about killing for money and personal gain.

According to MK co-creator John Tobias:

"Sub-Zero was the consummate assassin with no ethical code about killing. His name and outfit were indicative of his merciless, cold-blooded nature."

Bi Han‘s outfit was designed to amplify his icy motif. The minimalist uniform and iconic facial covering were inspired by Asian mystics, ninjas, and icicles. According to designer John Vogel:

"Form follows function was definitely a big part of creating Sub-Zero’s look. How can we make this guy look freezing cold and badass?"

In combat, Bi Han used razor-sharp icicles and cryokinetic blasts to disable and destroy his enemies. He could freeze opponents in place, shatter their bodies, or pierce them with frozen projectiles. His spine-ripping Fatality cemented his vicious reputation.

During his MK1 participation, Bi Han successfully assassinated the Great Kung Lao and helped the sorcerer Quan Chi retrieve an ancient map. But in MK1‘s climatic final battle with Scorpion, he met his demise at the vengeful ninja‘s hands.

Bi Han‘s soul descended into the Netherrealm, becoming the wrathful wraith Noob Saibot (his name spelled backwards). But his legacy as Sub-Zero would live on through his younger brother Kuai Liang.

Kuai Liang – The Younger Sub-Zero

Following Bi Han‘s death, the Lin Kuei‘s leadership passed to the robotic cyber-ninja Sektor. Under his command, Lin Kuei warriors were forced to undergo cyberization – the involuntary transformation into cyborgs.

Sektor demanded the reluctant warrior Kuai Liang submit to cyberization and assume his brother‘s code name. But Kuai Liang refused and defected from the Lin Kuei instead. He aligned with Raiden‘s forces of light in Mortal Kombat 3 in order to bring down Shao Kahn‘s Outworld forces.

Kuai Liang sought to use his gifts for good, upholding the honor of the Sub-Zero title and fighting corruption. As MK co-creator Ed Boon stated:

“Kuai Liang tries to do the honorable thing and not just be this cold-blooded assassin.”

Much like his brother Bi Han, Kuai Liang possesses cryomantic abilities – but he uses them to fight evil rather than enable it. As the new Sub-Zero, Kuai Liang also obtains an iconic costume change. Gone were the stealthy dark colors – now he dawned an outfit proudly displaying his Lin Kuei heritage in light blue and white.

As a kombatant, Kuai Liang balances grace and ruthlessness. His elegant Tai Chi and Shotokan styles accentuate his precisely controlled powers. And while he is a force for good, he will still FINISH foes with bone-chilling Fatalities when necessary.

Over the course of the games, Kuai Liang has taken on Shao Kahn, Shinnok, and other threats alongside allies like Raiden and Liu Kang. He even mentored an apprentice, Frost, to pass on his cryomancer legacy before she turned on him.

Recently in Mortal Kombat 11, Kuai Liang played a pivotal role in manipulating time to stop Kronika from erasing history. His cunning and leadership were crucial to saving Earthrealm from total destruction.

Now respected as an honorable warrior, Kuai Liang brought nobility back to the Sub-Zero mantle. He is living proof that anyone‘s destiny – no matter how dark – can be changed for the better.

Behind the Mask: Facts About Sub-Zero

Across over 30 years of games, comics, movies and more, Sub-Zero has cemented his status as a Mortal Kombat icon. Here are some interesting tidbits about the kold-hearted kriomancer:

  • Both Sub-Zero brothers were portrayed by Daniel Pesina in MK1 and MK2. This started the trend of them being played by the same actor.
  • In the 1990s MK live action show, Sub-Zero refused to kill innocent people and left the Lin Kuei.
  • The scar on Kuai Liang‘s right eye was given to him by Kano before the events of MKX.
  • Sub-Zero was almost cut from MK2 due to palette swap criticisms, but fan demand brought him back.
  • His alternate "Kold War" costume is a reference to Cold War-era Soviet uniforms.
  • The Lin Kuei were inspired by the historical Chinese Tong assassin groups.
  • In MK Mythologies, Quan Chi killed Sub-Zero‘s mother and aunt when he was a child.
  • Kuai Liang briefly wore the codename Tundra early in his MK3 introduction before assuming the Sub-Zero title.
  • Ed Boon‘s favorite Fatality is Sub-Zero‘s spine rip where he freezes the head then tears out the spine and skull.

The Legacy of Sub-Zero

It‘s incredible to see how this Cold War assassin has grown into an honorable Earthrealm defender over decades of Mortal Kombat lore and gameplay evolution. Looking back, Sub-Zero has made an icy impact as one of MK‘s most recognizable and cool characters.

As a fellow gamer, I‘ll always remember the first time I pulled off Sub-Zero‘s brutal spine rip Fatality and how I‘ve eagerly anticipated every new appearance and chapter featuring this iconic kombatant.

Whether as the vicious Bi Han or the nobility of Kuai Liang, Sub-Zero continues to wow fans with his frigid fighting style and cold-blooded persona. There‘s something so satisfying about freezing an opponent and shattering them into shards with that final icy blast.

In a way, Sub-Zero also represents the duality in many of us. His story shows that someone‘s past and destiny are not always fixed – that redemption is possible if you stay true to your beliefs. Not bad for a character that originally started as a mere color swap!

So next time you boot up Mortal Kombat on your console or mobile device, be sure to choose Sub-Zero and appreciate the decades of creative vision and refinement that went into crafting this beloved kombatant. Test your skills with his lethal combos, chill foes to the bone, and relish pulling off that wicked spinal column trophy.

Because when you get down to it, Sub-Zero‘s real name may be Kuai Liang – but his true name is legend.
