What is the difference between binding of Isaac rebirth and Repentance?
For fans of the classic roguelike Binding of Isaac, this question comes up a lot regarding the new Repentance DLC. As the latest expansion pack, Repentance adds a huge amount of new material and changes to the base Rebirth game. For players new and old, understanding the differences can help decide if Repentance is worth picking up.
As a hardcore Binding of Isaac enthusiast myself, I‘ll cover what exactly Repentance offers compared to Rebirth and previous versions. There‘s a ton of new items, features, and details that even after 100+ hours I‘m still discovering in Repentance. While Rebirth still holds up incredibly well on its own, Repentance takes the Isaac experience to new heights for players who want even more craziness.
Do you need Rebirth to play Repentance?
The first key fact – Repentance is an expansion DLC, not a standalone game. You need to own Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and the previous DLCs (Afterbirth and Afterbirth+) in order to play it. Repentance won‘t work by itself.
So if you want to jump into Repentance, you need to buy and install Rebirth first. Think of Repentance as building on top of Rebirth rather than replacing it.
Repentance vs. Rebirth – What‘s New?
I‘ve put over 600 hours into Rebirth over the years. Even so, Repentance adds so many new items, features and details that it almost feels like an entirely new game. The devs really went all out to cram this expansion with content for hardcore fans.
Here‘s an overview of some of the major additions compared to Rebirth:
-
Over 130 new collectible items – Trinkets, pills, passive items, actives. Brings the total count to over 700 compared to Rebirth‘s 534.
-
Around 100 special trinkets – New effects to mix up runs even more.
-
25+ new bosses – Fresh challenges like The Beast, Mother, Clog, Singe, and more.
-
New Hard mode – Enhanced gameplay with faster enemies, cursed rooms, and more danger.
-
4 player local co-op – Play with up to 4 players, not just 2. More chaos and fun.
-
Jacob & Esau character – Control both brothers at the same time for a new strategic experience.
-
Tainted characters – Alternate versions of every character with new abilities. Around 34 in total.
-
Greedier mode – A tougher take on Greed mode with new waves and items to unlock.
-
100+ new achievements – Tons of new goals and milestones to hit.
-
Extra challenges – Designed to test your skills in specific ways.
-
Graphical updates – Visual enhancements and engine improvements.
And so much more that would take dozens of paragraphs to fully list out. Repentance packs almost as much new material as Rebirth itself while integrating the Antibirth mod and all previous DLC additions.
| Rebirth | Repentance | |
|---|---|---|
| Items | 534 | 700+ |
| Trinkets | 82 | 180+ |
| Bosses | 33 | 58+ |
| Characters | 16 | 34 |
| Challenges | 32 | 46 |
As the numbers show, Repentance expands Rebirth‘s already substantial content into an even bigger beast. I‘m still finding new item synergies and secrets even after double digit playthroughs.
Core Gameplay – Same Addictive Roguelike
Importantly, while Repentance packs on new material, the core gameplay remains addictively fun. The binding of Isaac formula of procedurally generated dungeons, hoards of bizarre enemies, and 100,000+ item combinations is still fantastic after all these years.
Repentance retains the best parts of the Rebirth experience while upping the insanity. I feared new items and characters might throw off balance, but so far the devs have done an excellent job integrating additions while maintaining tight gameplay. Hard mode also lets you ramp up the challenge once you‘ve mastered the basics.
So if you already love Rebirth‘s gameplay, Repentance just gives you way more of that awesome roguelike action. And if not, the base Rebirth game is still a must-play masterpiece.
Repentance DLC Price – Well Worth it For Fans
Considering the sheer amount of quality content added, Repentance‘s asking price of $15 is more than fair in my opinion. 5 huge new levels, 30+ bosses, 100 new items, an entirely new Hard mode, and tons more unlocks.
The Binding of Isaac consistently provides more entertainment per dollar than almost any other game series for me personally. I‘m happy to pay for meaty expansions that support the developers and allow them to keep making Isaac bigger and better.
Obviously Repentance is aimed at hardcore Isaac fans who have played Rebirth extensively. But for players who want even more, it delivers tremendously. The hundreds of hours of new gameplay, secrets, and replayability are well worth the price for entry for fans.
Verdict – Must-Have For Isaac Diehards, Great For Newcomers Too
While Rebirth remains an incredible game, Repentance takes the Isaac experience to new heights. As a diehard fan myself, it‘s easily the best version of the game to date, with an almost absurd amount of new stuff to discover across many playthroughs. It reminds me of the leap from vanilla WoW to the Burning Crusade expansion back in the day.
For players new to Isaac, I think starting with Rebirth and then expanding to Repentance is ideal. But Repentance is also a great entry point since it contains all previous DLC packs. Just be ready for an absolutely massive amount of items and secrets to uncover that could take over your free time.
So in summary, The Binding of Isaac: Repentance gets my highest recommendation. It retains everything that makes Isaac so addictively fun while packing an insane number of additions that will take even veterans hundreds of hours to fully experience. It‘s a must-buy for fans hungry for more Isaac madness.
