What is the difference between IV 0 and 100 Pokémon Go?

As an avid Pokemon Go player and gaming geek, I‘ve powered up my fair share of Pokemon with IVs ranging from terrible to perfect. While we all chase those elusive 4-star 100% IV ‘hundos‘, how much does IV perfection really matter compared to 0% IV ‘nundos‘ in battles and gameplay? Grab your phone and put on your Trainer hat as we dive deep into the world of Individual Values.

What are IVs in Pokemon Go?

Each Pokemon in Go has 3 separate Individual Values (IVs) that range from 0 to 15 for the Attack, Defense, and Stamina stats. IVs help determine a Pokemon‘s baseline combat abilities before considering factors like level, moves, and types.

Higher IVs increase the potential power ceiling for a Pokemon. For example, let‘s look at two theoretical Dragonite with identical Fast and Charge moves:

As you can see, the perfect IV Dragonite caps out over 400 CP higher thanks to those maxed out IVs. That extra power can mean winning key matchups that the 0% IV Dragonite would lose.

But keep in mind IVs are just one piece of the puzzle…

How Much Better Are 100% IVs in Battle?

While the IV gap seems massive on paper, in actual battle simulations the difference is much smaller. According to extensive research by sites like GamePress and The Silph Road, perfect IVs provide around a 5-15% performance edge over the same Pokemon with 0% IVs in metrics like:

• Damage Dealt: 100% IVs do about 5-10% more damage on average
• Time to Win: 100% IVs win raids ~10% faster
• Estimator: 100% IVs last ~10% longer by TTW estimators
• Survival Time: 100% IVs faint ~10% later on average

Now these may seem tiny, but an extra 5-10% damage here and there can mean victory or defeat against Raid bosses with massive HP pools. But for many matchups, your battle team composition, levels, and movesets matter far more.

As a rule of thumb from personal experience, I‘ve found 100% IVs add about 10% to a Pokemon‘s performance capabilities. Nothing crazy, but still enough to be noticeable!

Why Are 0% IVs So Incredibly Rare?

Landing those perfect 100% IVs from a Raid or Egg hatch feels great. But dedicated Pokemon professors know that 0% IV ‘nundos‘ are far more elusive – some estimate 5 to 10 times rarer!

Unlike hundos, nundos can ONLY be found in normal wild spawns with random IVs. Raids, Eggs, Research, and Lucky Trades have IV floors that prevent 0% IVs as seen in this IV distribution chart:

With 1 in 4096 baseline shiny odds, experts report 0% IV odds could be as high as 1 in 65,000! Having caught over 20,000 Pokemon myself, I‘ve found only one true nundo. So if you manage to build a zero IV collection, I tip my hat to you fellow Trainer!

How Should You Use High and Low IV Pokemon?

When is it worth powering up and evolving Pokemon with less than perfect IVs? Here are my guidelines:

• 100% IVs – Max out as the ideal investments for Raids, PvP, Gyms. Satisfying to show off!

• 75-90% IVs – Worth powering up if high level or have the ideal moves. Get almost hundo power at a discount!

• 0-74% IVs – Use for less important evolutions, Pokédex filler, or trading fodder.

• 0% IVs – Ultimate collectors item! Build specialty Great or Little League teams that reward low Attack.

And two universal tips:

1. Never power up FIRST – always evolve first to maximize later CP gains
2. Check moves first – moves matter far more than IVs, learn before investing!

How Appraisals Show IV Percentages

Instead of visible IV numbers, the in-game Appraisal system gives a quick glimpse into your Pokemon‘s IV percentages:

• No stars = 0-49% IVs
• 1 star = 50-64% IVs
• 2 stars = 65-79% IVs
• 3 stars = 80-94% IVs
• 4 stars = 98-100% IVs

I wish the app showed us the exact IVs rather than ranges for better decision making. But for now it‘s a handy shortcut to quickly ID the big differences between low and high IV specimens.

What Influences IVs?

The way you obtain a Pokemon determines its possible IV ranges:

• Wild spawns – Totally random 0-15 for each IV
• Raids – Minimum 10/10/10 IVs (67-80%)
• Eggs – Minimum 10/10/10 IVs
• Research – Minimum 10/10/10 IVs
• Trades – Random IV reroll, Lucky 12/12/12 minimum

So your best odds for perfection come from Raids, Eggs, and Lucky Trades rather than wild catches. But certain techniques can help narrow the odds…

Useful Niche Applications for 0% IVs

Alright, you may be wondering who in their right mind would want a 0% IV Pokémon? Fair question! While useless for Raids and Gyms, they do have some niche applications:

• Great & Little Leagues – Low Attack IVs can allow you to "power up" other stats more
• Trading – Finding 0% and 100% IV trading partners unlocks Lucky chances
• Collections – Pure nundo and hundo collectors go crazy for ‘em!
• Minimum CP – Hit CP caps for PvP leagues or Gym placement
• Trick Room – Move faster under Trick Room in the core games
• Living Dex – Fill all IV combinations for each species
• Nostalgia – Remember the wild west early days before IV floors

So don‘t discard that 0% Magikarp just yet! With some creativity they can enable unique strategies.

Changing IVs in Main Games

In the core Pokemon RPGs for Nintendo consoles, there are ways to influence or alter a Pokemon‘s IVs that don‘t exist in Go:

• Breeding – Pass down IVs from parents, target specific stats
• Bottle Caps – Max out IVs to 31 in all stats
• Hyper Training – Max out Level 100 Pokemon‘s IVs

But Niantic has (so far) chosen to keep IVs permanently fixed once caught. I‘d love to see them add some IV manipulation items from the main games to provide alternatives to the IV lottery!

Legendary Pokemon with God-like Power

As a hardcore fan depuis ‘96, I‘m fascinated by the lore and backstories behind Legendary Pokemon. These rare and powerful monsters are woven into the fabric of the Pokemon universe and command exceptional strength:

• Arceus – Mythical godlike creator of the Pokemon universe
• Mewtwo – Genetically engineered by Team Rocket to be the ultimate weapon
• Rayquaza – Halted the ancient clash between Groudon and Kyogre
• Dialga – Controls the flow of time itself as a temporal Pokemon
• Giratina – Banished to the Distortion World for its overwhelming violence
• Kyogre – Expanding the oceans with torrential downpours swallowed civilizations
• Zekrom – Legendary dragon wielding catastrophic lightning storms

Game Freak rightfully gave these legends the stats and movepools to live up to their epic mythology! Their demigod-level powers place them on a tier far above other Pokemon. I hope Niantic continues bringing more of these icons into Go!

The Hunt for 100% IVs

According to various Reddit and Silph Road analyses, the odds of catching a 100% ‘hundo‘ seem to be around 1 in 1000 under normal conditions. Given the base 1 in 4096 Shiny odds, that‘s still lucky!

Of course, your chances improve dramatically through Raids, Eggs, and Research encounters. Out of my 2788 total catches, I‘ve found wild hundos at a rate of ~1/1400. But from 547 Raid bosses, my perfect IV rate increased to ~1/270.

So while 100% IVs remain elusive, don‘t fret if your Mewtwo trio doesn‘t have perfect 15 ATK. Grab a few more Raikou from Research and your odds will steadily improve! Patience and persistence pay off in the long run.

IVs in Context

At the end of the day, IVs are just one piece of the puzzle when building your battle teams. Factors like Levels, Movesets, and Typing ultimately play bigger roles:

• Levels – Directly influence CP and HP. Scales faster than IVs.
• Movesets – STAB, type coverage, damage, and utility. Make or break battles.
• Typing – Massive impact on weaknesses, resistances, and matchups.
• IVs – Provide about a 10% gain from 0% to 100% IVs.

You can take down the toughest Raid bosses without perfect IVs as long as your levels, counters, and dodging are on point. And in PvP, IVs are just one aspect of gaining an edge.

So while max IVs are certainly nice, don‘t discard lower ones as useless. Extract some value through evolution, then recycle into the candy grinder when you eventually find that perfect specimen!
