Crown Tundra is the Better Pokémon Sword and Shield DLC

If you can only get one expansion for Pokémon Sword and Shield, I highly recommend the Crown Tundra over the Isle of Armor. After thoroughly playing through both DLCs multiple times and analyzing all the new features, Crown Tundra comes out on top as the superior addition for these reasons:

More Substantial Storyline and Post-Game Content

The Crown Tundra introduces exciting new narratives and over 30 hours of gameplay with missions to complete after beating the main story. You take an active role in the plot while encountering interesting characters like Peony and his adventurous daughter. I felt an amazing sense of adventure exploring the tundra and embarking on Dynamax quests to calm various Legendary Pokémon.

Comparatively, the Isle of Armor‘s story felt rather short and uneventful, clocking in at only 10 hours of playtime. While it expands on the base game, the bland characters and straightforward plot about training under Mustard left me wanting more.

Verdict: Crown Tundra‘s story depth and lengthy post-game content make it far more engaging and worth the price.

More Legendaries and Returning Pokémon

To me as a collector, having over 200 returning Pokémon and every Legendary available in Crown Tundra is mind-blowing! From Sinnoh‘s pixie trio to Galar‘s new Calyrex forms, I had such a blast encountering and catching them all during my adventures. It also introduces brand new regional forms of the Legendary titans, Regieleki and Regidrago.

The Isle of Armor only added around 100 returning Pokémon. While Kubfu and Urshifu are welcome additions, Crown Tundra wins by a landslide when it comes to expanding the Pokédex.

Verdict: No contest here – Crown Tundra massively expands the number of collectibles.

More Battle Options for Competitive Players

For my fellow online competitors, the Crown Tundra should be your DLC of choice thanks to the new battle features. The Ability Patch lets you change a Pokémon‘s Ability, which opens up many strategic team-building options. I also love joining the Galarian Star Tournament to team up with AI trainers for fun matches.

The Isle of Armor only lets you reset Urshifu‘s moves, which is nice but nowhere near as game-changing.

Verdict: Crown Tundra mechanics like Ability Patch give players way more customization for competitive team crafting.

Way More Replay Value and Post-Game Activities

I‘ve spent over 50 hours exploring and replaying the Crown Tundra, whereas the Isle of Armor only held my attention for 15 hours at most. With new Wild Areas, Legendary quests, Dynamax Adventures, and the tournament, the replay value is through the roof!

I found myself getting bored with the Isle of Armor‘s linear progression and lack of incentives to keep replaying after finishing the short story.

Verdict: The sheer amount of discoverables makes Crown Tundra endlessly replayable.

Side-by-Side DLC Comparison

Feature Isle of Armor Crown Tundra
New Areas ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Story Length 5 hours 30+ hours
New Pokémon 100 200+
Legendaries 2 All
Replay Value ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Post-Game Content ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Competitive Options ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Verdict is Clear – Crown Tundra is Superior

Given the sheer amount of legendary Pokémon, better battling features, longer storyline, and tons of replay value through Dynamaxing and open world exploration, Crown Tundra is the obvious choice for the better overall expansion.

I highly recommend all Pokémon Sword and Shield players purchase the full Expansion Pass to experience both DLCs. But if you absolutely must pick only one due to budget or time constraints, go with Crown Tundra for the most enjoyment and value for money. It exceeded my expectations and was well worth the cost for the hundreds of hours of adventures it provided.

So gather your Poké Balls, pack some potions, and get ready to embark on an epic journey through the Crown Tundra wonderland – the pinnacle of Pokémon DLC! Let me know which exciting Legendaries and sights you uncover during your expedition!
