Comparing the Top Master Duel Structure Decks

There are 5 viable structure decks to choose from in Master Duel as of January 2023. I‘ve created a table below to rank them across key factors:

Power Level – Magician of Pendulum clocks in with a top tier S ranking thanks to its ability to quickly swarm the field and make powerful Synchro, Xyz, and Link plays. It has one of the highest skill ceilings of any structure deck.

Ease of Use – The Magician strategy does require learning Pendulum summoning mechanics which can be tricky for brand new players. But it‘s easier to pilot than many meta decks.

Cost to Improve – A few UR staple additions like Ash Blossom and some Extra Deck upgrades will maximize Magician of Pendulum. But it‘s very playable right out of the box.

Overall, Magician of Pendulum strikes the best balance of power, complexity, and affordability in my experience. Let‘s look at why it‘s so strong.

• Potent spell/trap support – Staples like Solemn Strike, Time Pendulumgraph and Duelist Alliance provide disruption against opponents as you build your board.

• Easy Extra Deck access – Between generic Synchros like Ignister Prominence and Xyzs like Tornado Dragon, you can counter many opponent‘s boards.

• Powerful consistency skills – Skills like Draw Sense Low Level, LP Boost α, and Secrets of Dark Magic help with draw power and searchability.

Opening Combos

A typical opening move is to use Duelist Alliance to search Dragonpit Magician, use Dragonpit‘s Pendulum effect to destroy and search Oafdragon Magician, then Pendulum Summon Oafdragon and Harmonizing Magician from hand. This enables summoning Power Tool Dragon for a search while getting Harmonizing‘s effect to grab Black Fang Magician from deck. Going into Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon with Power Tool opens up a negate, or you can tune Black Fang with Oafdragon into Ignister Prominence to pop a card.

Adding Timestar Magician from the Extra Deck plus Chronograph Sorcerer in deck enables Rank 7 Xyz like Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon. There are so many routes Magician can take in setting up boards turn 1.

Mid-Game Power Plays

Once your Pendulum scales are set up, your next turns can swarm the field for game. Some examples:

• Pendulum Summoning Dragonpit, Oafdragon, and 2 other monsters lets you make Chaofeng, Phantom of the Yang Zing to lock out opponent‘s Spell/Traps.

• Bring back Harmonizing to search Black Fang again, tune into Cloudcastle, revive a Level 9 Synchro like Vermillion Dragon Mech or Trishula.

• Overlay Dragonpit and Oafdragon into Tornado Dragon to pop a threat or Number 11: Big Eye to steal a monster.

Pendulum summoning 2+ monsters every turn means you regularly make these comeback plays while controlling the duel.

Winning Matchups

I‘ve used Magician of Pendulum to great success against meta Master Duel decks like Tri-Brigade, Eldlich, Sky Striker and more. Here are some key tips:

• Against Tri-Brigade, make Chaofeng on turn 1 to stop Fraktall and Revolt. Use Tornado Dragon and Ignister to remove their threats.

• Sky Striker struggles with Time Pendulumgraph destroying their Spells/Traps and shutting down their gameplan. Big Eye also steals an important monster like Raye.

• Eldlich has no answer to your ability to summon multiple big bodies each turn. Time Pendulumgraph and Solemn Strike stop their backrow cards.

Very few opponents expect to face the Magician deck, giving you an edge in tournaments. It‘s underestimated but has the tools to stand up to Meta.

Improving Magician of Pendulum with Key Upgrades

While playable straight from the structure deck, I recommend the following UR and SR upgrades to push Magician of Pendulum to its full potential:

• 1-2x Chronograph Sorcerer – Level 6 Tuner that enables Power Tool Dragon and other Synchro combos.

• 1-2x Timegazer Magician – High scale Pendulum Monster with a powerful recursion effect.

• 1x Electrumite – Prevents bricking and sets up draw/search power. Arguably the deck‘s best card.

• 3x Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring – Shut down opponent‘s key search and draw effects. Useful hand trap.

• 1x Enlightenment Paladin – Spellcaster boss monster that pops cards and enables OTKs.

• 1x Selene, Queen of the Master Magicians – Link climbing into Accesscode Talker to close out games.

Even budget builds can compete by maxing out on Solemn Strikes for disruption and focusing the Extra Deck on Rank 7 Xyz plays. But the cards above give Magician of Pendulum the tools to thrive in Plat and higher competitive Master Duel rankings.

Magician of Pendulum is My Recommended Structure Deck

After extensively playing all of the structure decks available in Master Duel, Magician of Pendulum stands out as the strongest option and my top recommendation for new players. It has high skill potential but is simple enough for beginners to pilot. Powerful combo ability, versatility in the Extra Deck, and useful disruption makes Magicians competitive against Meta decks.

While Dinosmasher‘s Fury is cheaper to build and Cyber Style easier to play, Magician‘s higher power ceiling gives it the edge. I‘ve personally used a budget version of the deck to climb from Gold all the way up to Platinum rank in ranked duels. With the right tech choices and practice, Magicians can win local tournaments and compete on the top tables.
