Who can become a White Knight Tactics Ogre: Reborn?
Hello fellow tactical RPG fan! As you know, I‘m Terry and I absolutely love these kinds of complex, story-driven games. Tactics Ogre: Reborn has quickly become one of my all-time favorites. In this comprehensive guide, I‘ll be digging deep into the excellent White Knight class – its origins, strengths, best characters, and how it ties into the game‘s themes. Strap in, because this is going to be an epic journey!
A Legend Reborn
First, let‘s rewind a bit and talk about where Tactics Ogre began. The original Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together was released in 1995 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was created by Yasumi Matsuno, who also directed classics like Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story.
Even back then, Tactics Ogre stood out for its non-linear story, complex game systems, and outstanding worldbuilding. It gained a passionate cult following, but remained obscure compared to Final Fantasy.
Fast forward to 2010 when Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together got a PlayStation Portable remake. This updated version was finally brought to the Western world. It included new classes, characters and story tweaks while keeping the core experience intact.
Now in 2022, fans are overjoyed that Tactics Ogre: Reborn for modern platforms like PlayStation 5 breathes new life into this gaming legend. I‘ve sunk 50+ hours into Reborn so far, and it deserves every bit of hype. The graphics and sound are gorgeously remastered while retaining a retro charm.
But what really shines in Reborn is the intricate gameplay. Building your squad, customizing classes and equipment, debating battle tactics – it combines into a deeply strategic experience. And the morally gray story still hits hard.
So if you love games like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics, do yourself a favor and play Tactics Ogre Reborn! Next let‘s get into the origins of one of its most iconic classes…
Origins of the White Knight
The White Knight class dates all the way back to the Super Nintendo original game. In the early Tactics Ogre story, focal characters Gildas and Mirdyn were White Knights – chivalrous warriors fighting for justice amidst Valeria‘s turmoil.
In design, the White Knight took inspiration from the "Paladin" class in other RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. These holy warriors combine arms and healing magic to empower allies and vanquish evil.
When Tactics Ogre was remade for PSP, players could finally customize protagonist Denam into a White Knight as well. This opened up new story possibilities of him embracing benevolent order against the chaotic Lanselot Tartaros.
For newcomers to the series like me, these references to Denam‘s past as a White Knight really enrich the lore. I love seeing callbacks to previous games in a long-running RPG franchise.
Now in Reborn, the White Knight legacy continues with enhanced graphics and gameplay. Purists should find it honors the original vision, while modern upgrades make it smoother and more inviting to get into.
But how exactly does the White Knight class play on the battlefield? Let‘s break down their strengths and abilities next!
White Knight Class Overview
The White Knight is a pretty well-rounded class that can fit into almost any party. Here are its standout features:
Equipment
- All Armor types
- Most Weapons (Swords, Spears, Bows)
- Shields
Magic
- Light Magic (Healing, Buffs, Holy Damage)
Stats
- Good HP and Defenses
- Solid Strength and Magic
Skills
- Holy Defense – Resistance to Light Damage
- Indignation – Resistance to Silence, Paralysis
- Chivalry – Boosts nearby units‘ Attack and Defense
A capable fighter on their own, White Knights really shine when supporting others. Spells like Heal, Resurrection and Encourage maintain your squad‘s battle effectiveness. Indignation prevents pesky status effects like Silence shutting down your mages.
With their armor and protective buffs, White Knights are extremely durable. They can draw enemy fire away from more vulnerable allies. And unlike some hybrid classes, they have enough Strength to still dish out decent damage in melee.
Now let‘s look at some standout characters that can put the White Knight class to full use on the battlefield!
Best White Knight Characters
Gildas
As one of the original White Knights, Gildas is a natural fit for the class in Reborn. With his high Magic, MP pool and Faith, he reaches peak effectiveness with Light magic quickly. Give Gildas spears or swords to capitalize on his existing Weapon Masteries. Swift Justice works nicely when chasing down enemies. You can even have him ride a mount for mobility and extra attack range with polearms.
Focus on boosting Gildas‘ robust Vitality stat so he can shrug off attacks while holding the frontline. Equipment that raises Max MP will allow more spellcasting. Overall, he makes for an outstanding supportive White Knight.
Mirdyn
Mirdyn is the hard-hitting yin to Gildas‘ protective yang. She boasts massive HP even surpassing most heavyweight warriors. You can play her as either an armored knight with sword and shield, or a more mobile halberdier.
Mirdyn‘s lower Magic means she won‘t be as proficient with White Magic. But her high Faith still allows some backup healing/buffing. And her main role is dealing damage – few can stand against her mighty attacks.
Mirdyn has all the vitality to wear Heavy Armor and still remain mobile. I like equipping her with the Templar class‘ Regenerate skill too for self-healing. Keep her HP maxed out and she can decimate groups of enemies in melee while Gildas stays back keeping everyone alive. They make an incredible White Knight duo!
Denam
As the protagonist, Denam‘sgrowth depends on the player‘s choices. Focus on building up his Strength, Vitality and Faith. Take him down the Lawful route aligned with the religious Order of Philaha for a true White Knight experience.
Denam‘s Charm skill also boosts his Leadership stat granting buffs to nearby allies. Combine this with White Knight spells and you have an inspirational commander who leads by example in the thick of battle.
Story-wise, I find Denam‘s character arc as a White Knight really compelling, from an inexperienced youth seeking vengeance to master tactician guided by justice. It just fits the overall themes nicely in my opinion!
Vyce
A mage character like Vyce can perform well as a White Knight too. Train up his Magic stat which powers both White spells and any equipped weapons like staves. High Faith improves spell effectiveness.
Vyce already starts with some Light magic making him a natural healer. Give him Chivalry to further augment allies‘ fighting abilities. Equip wands or a bow when needing to chip in offensively.
You can even have Vyce ride a horse or dragon for added mobility to reach damaged allies quickly. Mastering both magic and combat, Vyce exemplifies how versatile the White Knight class can be.
Mastering the White Knight
Here are some tips to maximize White Knights on the battlefield:
Healing
-
Prioritize learning key White Magic like Heal, Resurrect, Regenerate. These keep your party alive and fighting.
-
Boost Faith to increase healing amounts and MP pool for more spell casts.
-
Position them centrally where they can reach injured units quickly.
Support
-
Use buffs like Chivalry, Encourage, and Angel Feather on allies engaged in combat.
-
Dispel enemy enchantments with Purify or they may run rampant.
-
Equip Shields/Heavy Armor to better draw enemy aggro and attention.
Offense
-
Holy spells like Divine Justice and Purify deal heavy damage against Dark aligned foes.
-
Enchant weapons with Elemental Stones or have mages cast buffs to bolster their physical attacks further.
-
Use movement skills to outflank opponents and attack their weak side/rear for extra damage.
Having both a more magic-oriented White Knight like Vyce and a tanky one like Mirdyn creates nice versatility. Support, heal and control the tide of battle!
Navigating Tactics Ogre‘s Story Routes
One of Reborn‘s biggest strengths is the branching story narrative. Key choices can take you down different paths and radically alter the broader conflict‘s outcome.
Here‘s a quick primer on how White Knights feature into the three major routes:
Law Route: Joins the Order of Philaha clerics. Fits Denam upholding discipline and order as a White Knight.
Chaos Route: Seeks revenge against Lanselot Tartaros. White Knights directly oppose his destructive chaos.
Neutral Route: Forges a new independent path. Leaves allegiance and class choices more open.
There‘s no definitive "right choice" – much comes down to your preferred playstyle and story perspective. I‘m partial to the Law path myself because it feels thematically appropriate for Denam‘s arc. But player agency is part of what makes Reborn so replayable.
The Symbolism of the White Knight
Beyond just gameplay implications, the White Knight archetype has deeper symbolism. They represent nobility and righteousness confronting injustice through both compassion and strength.
However, White Knights can also demonstrate rigid morality. Their higher code of ethics may lead to inflexibility and dogma if applied too blindly. After all, most conflicts have nuance beyond simple good versus evil.
In Tactics Ogre, we see White Knights steadily corrupted down an ends-justify-means path under a pretense of honor. It‘s a thoughtful examination of how even noble ideas can be twisted towards violence given the wrong circumstances.
But ultimately, the White Knights also exemplify our enduring hope that there are still those who would fight for what‘s right – even in the most bleak and war-torn lands. Personally, I find that aspiration very reassuring these days!
Conclusion
Hopefully this guide has given you a comprehensive overview of the White Knight class in Tactics Ogre: Reborn. Its blend of arms and magic make it versatile for supporting your squad in numerous ways. And thematically, it represents nobility and virtue amidst adversity.
I‘m excited to see where my own journey in Tactics Ogre leads next. There are so many directions to take Denam‘s saga and build my forces. If you couldn‘t tell already, I‘m completely captivated by Reborn and can‘t recommend it enough to strategy RPG fans!
Let me know if you have any other Tactics Ogre topics you‘d like me to cover in a future guide. I could talk about this incredible game for days. But for now, time to get back to leading my burgeoning army in Valeria! May your tactics prove victorious, friend.
