Who is Older: Yone or Yasuo? A Deep Dive into the Brothers‘ Origins

As experts on League of Legends lore know, Yone and Yasuo share one of the game‘s most famous sibling rivalries. But who is the elder brother? Let‘s analyze their backstories and dig into the meaning behind their tragic duel.

The Warrior Brothers of Ionia

Ionia is a land deeply shaped by tradition and spirituality. For centuries, its people have practiced swordsmanship as a method of sharpening the mind and body. As young men, Yone and Yasuo followed this path under a renowned master.

Though brothers, the two took divergent approaches to their training according to their Universe biographies:

“While Yasuo was impulsive and arrogant, Yone was disciplined and patient. As Yone trained in the village‘s renowned sword school, his skill with the dual blades drew admiration from his peers.”

Even in youth, their personalities created conflict as Yone tried to guide his younger sibling:

“When other children teased Yasuo, Yone was there to defend him. But what Yasuo lacked in patience, he made up for in determination.”

As we‘ll see, these differences only grew over time, leading the once-close brothers down a tragic path.

Yasuo – The Impulsive Wind Warrior

As a “six or seven” year old, Yasuo joined his village‘s prestigious sword school. His aggressive style immediately clashed with the structured teachings of his elders. Even then, his passion could not be denied:

“He made up for his lack of poise with grit and resolve, and over the years his practice paid off.”

While respected for his skills, Yasuo‘s individualism concerned the traditional masters. His brother Yone became a model student, but Yasuo followed his own way, for better or worse.

Yone – The Disciplined Elder Brother

Yone was likely a few years older than Yasuo, and treated his role as elder brother seriously. The Universe tells us:

“As the first son of the village‘s best-regarded swordmaster, Yone took it upon himself to guide his younger half-brother down the true path.”

Unfortunately, Yasuo resisted Yone‘s disciplined example, preferring to act on his emotions. This impulsiveness would ultimately cost Yasuo far more than he ever imagined.

The Wind Techniques that Changed Everything

As Yasuo‘s skills advanced under his master‘s guidance, he learned techniques for magically channeling the power of the wind:

“Yasuo showed the potential to be the greatest swordsman the school had ever produced. His aggressive style was tempered by his master’s teachings, and gradually he learned to wield the wind itself to aid his techniques, enhancing his abilities.”

But this growing prowess worried the elders, who forbid using the wind arts without their permission. Their caution proved wise, as we‘ll soon see…

A Fateful Decision with Tragic Consequences

During a crucial mission for his village, Yasuo ignored the elders‘ warnings and chose to unleash the forbidden wind magic:

“When a band of Noxian assassins infiltrated the village…Yasuo defied his master’s orders and unleashed the full power of his wind techniques to defeat the enemies.”

To his horror, the uncontrolled power killed not only the assassins, but his own master in the crossfire. This master – Elder Souma – was Yone‘s mentor too, and his brother demanded justice.

A Duel Between Brothers

Elder Souma‘s death represented a grave betrayal of Ionian tradition. Remaining loyal, Yone made the painful choice to confront his brother and learned the wind arts had killed their master:

“Yone fought with courage and honor, but…deep down, he knew his brother was not to blame. Still, his duty was clear, and gradually he overcame Yasuo‘s defenses.”

In the heat of battle, a single strike of Yasuo‘s blade cut Yone down. Though victorious, Yasuo had never felt more defeated.

The Hunted Exile

Despite their bond, Yone‘s dying words damned Yasuo by revealing only he could‘ve known the deadly wind techniques. Yasuo pleaded innocence but no one else survived to confirm or deny his guilt.

Now branded a traitor, fratricide, and murderer, Yasuo wandered friendless and alone:

“For years he drifted through the land he once called home, a shell of the man he once was, seeking atonement for the death of his brother.”

Yet even exile could not quell Yasuo‘s skill and determination. In time, he mastered the wind and his own inner demons.

Yone‘s Vengeful Resurrection

Death was not the end for Yone, as we learned in the Spirit Blossom saga. Fuelled by rage and regret, he rose again as a spectral demon hunter sworn to destroy evil spirits:

“Upon his death, he found himself hunted by a malevolent entity of the spirit realm, now manifest, that dogged him relentlessly until he was forced to confront it with steel. The battle lasted days, but Yone stood victorious over the creature.”

Ironically, saving others by slaying demons now gave Yone‘s afterlife purpose – while also prolonging his resentment toward his brother.

When Brothers Duel Again

In an epic encounter during the Spirit Blossom festival, Yone crossed blades with Yasuo once more. Neither could find the heart to kill the other, leaving their relationship unresolved:

“In the clash between past and present, guilt and regret, no victor emerged.”

Although tensions remain, it seems their shared love as brothers still burns beneath the surface.

What‘s in a Name?

Their names reveal much about the two siblings:

  • Yasuo means “peaceful” or “tranquil” in Japanese, though his temperament is quite the opposite.
  • Yone contains the kanji character for “reason” or “logic”, befitting his orderly nature.
Name Meaning Personality
Yasuo Peaceful, tranquil Impulsive, arrogant, emotional
Yone Reason, logic Disciplined, logical, composed

Unresolved Mysteries

Many fans speculate about Yasuo and Yone‘s relationships and families outside what is confirmed canon. Let‘s analyze some popular theories:

  • Yasuo x Ahri – These two are frequently shipped, but have no romantic history in the lore.
  • Dawnbringer Soraka – Her voice lines imply she may be Yasuo‘s daughter, but this connection is unproven.
  • Yasuo‘s Wife – A wife named Sara appears in one skin‘s lore, but is not part of his core canon story.

The threads left hanging give writers plenty of room to further develop these champions and their ties to others. We can expect more stories revealing their pasts in the years to come!

Brothers, Yet Divided

At their core, Yone and Yasuo demonstrate how sacred bonds can break under the weight of duty, honor, guilt and vengeance. Their tale remains irresistibly fascinating, as brothers divided by a tragedy neither wanted, but which both played a role in creating.

While we may never see a full reconciliation, there is hope the two will find solace and continue protecting Ionia together against future threats. For no matter how heated the rivalry, family is forever.
