Who Wielded the Legendary Gjallarhorn?

If you‘re a Destiny player, there‘s a good chance you know all about the Gjallarhorn. This infamous rocket launcher is deeply rooted in Norse mythology, bringing a piece of those ancient legends into the world of Destiny. Join me on a journey through the history of the Gjallarhorn, both in myth and in game.

The Guardian God Heimdallr

In Norse mythology, the Gjallarhorn was wielded by Heimdallr, guardian of the gods. As a son of Odin, Heimdallr possessed incredible senses and powers beyond those of most gods and men. His eyesight could stretch for hundreds of miles, allowing him to spot any dangers approaching Asgard, home of the gods. His hearing was so acute, he could hear grass grow in the meadows and wool grow on sheep.

Heimdallr dwelled at Himinbjörg, a cliff where the burning rainbow bridge Bifröst connected heaven and earth. There he kept constant watch, requiring less sleep than a bird. Heimdallr remained ever vigilant, knowing the safety of Asgard and its inhabitants rested on his shoulders.

When Ragnarok loomed – the prophesied apocalyptic battle between the gods and their enemies – Heimdallr was tasked with sounding the warning. His mystical Gjallarhorn, when blown, produced a tremendous blast that could be heard through all Nine Worlds.

The Horn That Signals the End

Why did Heimdallr wield such a powerful horn? As guardian of the gods, it was his sworn duty to alert the deities whenever their mortal enemies, the giants, drew near.

The legends say that prior to Ragnarok, there will be three bitter winters with no summer in between. Wars will break out all over Midgard. Brother will fight brother. Famines and pandemics will sweep the realms. It is after these omens that the giants will seize their chance to attack, with the great wolf Fenrir leading the charge.

When Heimdallr sees the forces amassing and the final hour at hand, he will sound the mighty Gjallarhorn. Its booming notes will echo throughout all of creation. The gods will then rally to the field of Vígríðr as Heimdallr continues to blow the horn with all his might. Only then can the epic battle begin.

The Gjallarhorn‘s purpose is clear. Its piercing blast signals impending catastrophe and serves as a muster call to action for the gods. All who hear its roar immediately know that disaster looms.

Technical Specs of a Legendary Rocket Launcher

Let‘s fast forward from ancient mythology to the world of Destiny. The Gjallarhorn made its explosive debut in the original Destiny game back in 2014, where it quickly gained a reputation as one the most powerful and coveted Exotic weapons.

In Destiny lore, the Gjallarhorn was designed by legendary Guardian Feizel Crux and gifted to heroes of the Twilight Gap battle. The weapon strongly evokes its mythical namesake, from the ornate wolf motifs to the coiled horn design of the launcher.

So what makes the Gjallarhorn such a prized possession? Let‘s dig into the specs:

  • Fires tracking rockets that will seek out targets and curve towards them.
  • Wolfpack Rounds split into smaller homing missiles on detonation for added damage.
  • Typical blast radius of around 7 meters for high damage on direct hits.
  • Reload speed averages around 3.5 seconds with the right perks and gear.
  • Comes with a magazine size of 2 rockets. Can be boosted to 3 rockets with catalyst upgrade.
  • Hits velocity cap of 97 with perks like Clown Cartridge.
  • Excels at single target DPS compared to other rocket launchers.

In the right hands, the capabilities of Gjallarhorn are nothing short of devastating. Combined with top-tier armor mods, this rocket can vaporize bosses in seconds during raid encounters. The tracking and Wolfpack Rounds chew through tough enemies. And with certain buffs active, we‘re talking over 1 million damage per shot.

Weapon DPS Total Damage
Gjallarhorn 63,658 1,590,000
Wardcliff Coil 46,894 1,172,000
Royal Entry 27,986 699,000

(Numbers via Destiny 2 DPS spreadsheet)

It‘s easy to see why the Gjallarhorn has reached legendary status both in the realms of fantasy and gaming. In capable hands, few weapons can match its sheer destructive power.

The Return of an Icon

For longtime Destiny players, myself included, the Gjallarhorn holds a special place in our hearts. It wasn‘t just the firepower that made this weapon so iconic – it was the thrill of finally getting your hands on one.

The Gjallarhorn‘s rarity made it a white whale for Guardians in those early days. With random roll Exotics, you could grind for months and never see one drop. I have fond memories of yelling loud enough to wake my household when I finally scored my own Gjallarhorn.

So you can imagine the community reaction when Bungie announced the rocket launcher‘s triumphant return in Destiny 2. It was part of the nostalgic 30th Anniversary content. I vividly remember loading up the new Dungeon and having moments of sheer bliss mowing down enemies with those signature Wolfpack Rounds.

For longtime players, this was a chance to relive the magic. For newer folks, it was an opportunity to wield a piece of Destiny legend. I can say firsthand that the Gjallarhorn still reigns supreme when it comes to boss melting power.

The Journey to Claim Your Own

If you‘re looking to add this iconic rocket launcher to your arsenal, here are the steps:

  • Speak to Shaw Han in the Cosmodrome to pick up the "And Out Fly the Wolves" quest.
  • Complete some tracking, patrols, and public events around the Cosmodrome.
  • Venture into the new Grasp of Avarice dungeon and clear all encounters.
  • Return and claim Gjallarhorn from Shaw Han.

The whole expedition should take 60-90 minutes. Having a fireteam is recommended for tackling the dungeon portion. After you grab the rocket launcher, you‘ll need to rack up around 400 enemy kills to complete the catalyst and unlock its full capabilities.

For me, part of the joy is knowing I helped avenge the legacy of Heimdallr himself. May the Gjallarhorn blast throughout Destiny realms for years to come! Its mighty roar signals that Guardians are ready to brave the deadliest challenges. Skål!
