Why Do I Have 20 Estus Flasks in Dark Souls?

The Estus Flask – your handy reusable heal-over-time potion refilled at bonfires. It‘s your primary means of survival when exploring the dangerous realm of Lordran in Dark Souls. But why can you eventually get up to 20 uses of this trusty flask? Let‘s uncover the secrets and mechanics involved in kindling and upgrading your Estus Flask capacity.

A Quick Primer on Estus

For any newcomers to the Souls series, here‘s a quick overview of how Estus Flasks function:

  • Drink to rapidly replenish your HP (health) during or outside of combat
  • Refilled automatically whenever you rest at a bonfire
  • Number of uses determined by the kindling level of the bonfire
  • Healing effectiveness can also be reinforced with special items

So having more Estus charges and making each sip more potent is key to surviving longer against brutal enemies and bosses!

The Origins of Your Flask

A little history and lore on this iconic healing item. Your starting Estus Flask is gifted by Oscar, Knight of Astora when you first awake in the Undead Asylum.

Its emerald green contents come from the Ashen Estus, originally Flame-born lifegem water linked to the ancient Lords. In Dark Souls, this liquid bestows some of the bonfire‘s rejuvenating flame unto the Undead.

And once you leave the Asylum, resting at bonfires across Lordran will refill and refresh your Flask. But the power of these watchfires can be enhanced…

Kindling for Increased Uses

The first way to upgrade your Estus Flask is through Kindling. Most bonfires begin with only 5 charges.

But by spending a humanity point and selecting "Kindle", that watchfire‘s kindling will be strengthened, increasing the Estus uses it grants by 5.

So the process goes:

  • 5 uses -> Kindling costs 1 humanity -> 10 uses
  • 10 uses – > Kindling again costs 1 humanity -> 15 uses
  • 15 uses -> Kindling a third time costs 1 humanity -> 20 uses (max)

Rite of Kindling – Boosting Beyond 10

Here‘s the catch though – normally kindling a bonfire only works once to reach 10 uses, even if you have humanity to spare.

To increase beyond 10 Estus requires finding the Rite of Kindling after defeating Pinwheel in the Catacombs. This key item permanently enables kindling most fires twice more up to the max 20 uses.

But not all bonfires are equal…

Special Bonfires – Firelink and Anor Londo

Certain special bonfires are already strengthened to provide 10 Estus uses by default:

  • Firelink Shrine – Your safe haven hub, always at 10 uses
  • Anor Londo – A majestic city watched over by the gods

With the Rite obtained, these can be fully kindled to grant 20 Estus Flasks. Most standard bonfires unfortunately only empower up to 10 though.

Reinforcing with Shards

In addition to kindling, you can further improve your Estus Flask with these special items:

  • Estus Shard – Boosts the total number of Flask charges
  • Undead Bone Shard – Makes each sip more potent at restoring HP

Reinforcing this way incrementally increases the effectiveness of each Estus Flask use.

Let‘s look at the max potential with fully kindled standard bonfires and reinforced Estus:

Bonfire State Uses Healing Per Charge Total Healing
Not Kindled 5 Moderate Low
Kindled to 10 10 Moderate Moderate
Kindled to 10 + Fully Reinforced 10 Very High Very High

As you can see, both kindling and reinforcing have a big impact!

Comparison to Other Souls Games

The original Dark Souls is quite generous with its max Estus capacity. Here‘s how flask mechanics differ across the series:

Game Max Estus Uses Upgrade Items
Dark Souls 20 Kindling, Rite of Kindling, Shards
Dark Souls 3 15 Estus Shards
Elden Ring 14 Golden Seeds, Sacred Tears

So don‘t take that 20 use capacity for granted! It can be much lower in later games.

Community Perspectives on 20 Estus Use Balance

Within the Souls community, there has been debate around whether 20 Estus uses makes the game too easy compared to the intended challenge.

Some argue having so much healing trivializes zones and bosses by allowing more mistakes. Others counter that the game was designed around 20 uses, and limiting arbitrarily increases difficulty.

As a longtime fan, I believe the developers intended and balanced around 20 Estus being achievable. It rewards exploration to find the keys to unlocking your Flask‘s full potential. 20 uses shine against end-game bosses like Ornstein and Smough where the challenge remains high.

But others enjoy additional difficulty from self-imposed restrictions, which brings us to…

Advanced Estus Management

Once memorized, veteran players will often limit their Estus usage to heighten the challenge, or demonstrate skill:

  • Speedrunners may use only 1-5 flasks in a whole run
  • Challenge players may cap usage per life or per boss attempt
  • Flawless victories demand no Estus use at all!

For my first playthrough, having 20 Estus to learn bosses was a huge benefit. But now I enjoy testing my abilities with reduced healing just to keep things spicy!

Fond Memories of My First Blind Run

Thinking back to my early Dark Souls days, I distinctly remember the first time finding and kindling a bonfire to 10 Estus for the first time.

Refilling up to 10 brilliant green charges was an incredible feeling after struggling through levels with only 5 uses. It opened up new possibilities to push further into dangerous areas I had hit a wall in before.

Later getting the Rite of Kindling felt like breaking the game, solidifying 20 Estus as a rite of passage reward for conquering the Catacombs and their nefarious Skeleton Wheels.

Upon returning to Firelink Shrine and kindling fully to 20 for the first time, I knew I had finally unlocked the game‘s full potential. I‘ll never forget that moment!

In Summary

Hopefully this provided helpful insights into the origins, functions, and strategies around your Estus Flask and why 20 uses is possible. Here are some key tips to recap:

  • Kindle bonfires with humanity to increase uses in increments of 5
  • Find the Rite of Kindling to exceed 10 uses
  • Reinforce with Shards for more charges and potency
  • Timing upgrades wisely balances challenge and progression
  • Remember 20 uses is a luxury only the first Dark Souls provides!
