Why is Slaking so overpowered?

To put it simply, Slaking has the stat distribution of a legendary Pokemon without the limiting battle mechanics that legendaries adhere to. With base stats exceeding even pseudo-legendary Pokémon, Slaking is a normal-type tank that requires very careful counterplay. Its gargantuan Attack and HP enable it to hit devastatingly hard and withstand tons of punishment. Were it not for its Truant ability limiting its action, Slaking would easily be banned from competitive play for being overpowered. But thankfully, Game Freak‘s excellent game balance reigns in this behemoth.

Slaking‘s Stats Are Legendary

With a base stat total of 670, Slaking has higher stats than any other non-legendary Pokemon. To put this in perspective, this total surpasses the mighty Dragonite and Tyranitar who sit comfortably at 600. The next closest non-legendary is Regigigas at 670, but its Slow Start ability reduces its stats for five turns making it far less of a immediate threat. Slaking has no such drawback, able to bring its full might to bear immediately.

HP 150
Attack 160
Defense 100
Sp. Atk 95
Sp. Def 65
Speed 100
Total 670

As you can see from its stat distribution above, Slaking specialized heavily in physical offense with brute force Attack power backed up by impressive HP and Speed. Very few Pokemon can take hits from its signature move Giga Impact. According to damage calculators, even resisted Giga Impacts from Slaking will inflict over half the health bar of Pokemon like Skarmory and Hippowdon.

To put into perspective how insane base 160 Attack is, it‘s as high as the Attack Forme of Landorus and Tornadus, two legendaries banned to Ubers. This blows away the Attack stat of pseudo-legendaries like Tyranitar and Garchomp who clock in at a mere 134 base Attack.

Truant Keeps It Balanced

So how does Game Freak rein in the sheer power of this offensive monster? By saddling Slaking with the ability Truant, which causes it to loaf around every other turn. This essentially halves Slaking‘s effective stats to compensate for its unbridled strength. 335 effective base stats is still very high, but counterplay becomes much more manageable.

Without Truant, Slaking would surely dominate every tier with little counterplay. Proper timing would enable it to blast through entire teams. Thankfully, Truant forces players to think carefully about when to use Slaking rather than just spamming attacks. Switching Slaking out during its loafing turns is essential to optimize its power.

Making Truant Work For You

While Truant limits Slaking‘s capability for relentless offense, savvy players have developed strategies to work around this ability. Common techniques include using Slaking as a switch in on death fodder, utilizing entry hazards and weather damage to hurt opponents while Slaking rests, or pairing Slaking with a slow tank or Truant user like Regigigas.

Jonathan, a 4-time VGC National Champion, recommends switching Slaking in whenever the opponent is forced to switch or setup: "The key is timing it for when your opponent is vulnerable. You don‘t want to give free turns."

Proper team support is mandatory with Slaking. Entry hazard setters like Froslass and weather inducers like Abomasnow complement it well. With smart switching and positioning, Truant can be worked around. But it demands skillful and careful play.

Countering the Giant

While Slaking has the power to annihilate unprepared teams, adequate counterplay does exist. Bulky fighters like Hippowdon can repeatedly strike Slaking on its Truant turns while phazing with moves like Whirlwind. Clefable has the bulk and speed to tank a hit and launch off super effective Doubleslaps.

Faster attackers are also an excellent check on Slaking. Powerful psychics like Azelf and Medicham can outpace Slaking and aggressively keep up damage and status effects even as Slaking loafs. Having your own Truant user also provides an opportunity to trade off attacks with Slaking.

Proper team building requires accounting for Slaking. Packing multiple sturdy tanks that can wear down its HP while idling is essential. Utilizing entry hazards cleverly pressures Slaking as it switches in and out. A speedy revenge killer can pick off a weakened Slaking late game before it has another chance to go on the rampage. Preparation goes a long way to taming this monster.

Slaking Demonstrates Excellent Game Balance

Slaking is a testament to Game Freak‘s knack for ability balancing. It has the stats and movepool of a boss-level legendary Pokemon without the drawback of being restricted to one copy per team. Were it not for Truant cutting its action in half, competitive Pokemon simply wouldn‘t be able to handle this normal-type wrecking ball.

For comparison, let‘s examine Turns, a giant monster in the game Monster Sanctuary. Turns hits incredibly hard and can stun enemies with shockwave stomps. But it is incredibly slow, allowing quicker enemies to strike multiple times before it can retaliate. Slaking‘s ability functions very similarly to reign in overwhelming force.

Slaking is an example of brilliant game design. It isn‘t overpowered, but it demands respect. Teams must account for its presence when planning. Containing its rampages mid-game after Truant wears off is crucial. Slaking exemplifies power checked by purposeful limitations. Game Freak nailed it.

The next time Slaking demolishes your team, don‘t be frustrated. Appreciate the masterful stat distribution and ability effects that balance this behemoth. With knowledge, preparation, and skill, you can tame this titan. Just be wary of letting it go on an unchecked rampage once Truant‘s effect wears off!
