Ambullneo Mastiff: The Gentle Giant with a Hefty Price Tag

As a dedicated dog lover, I‘ve always been drawn to large breeds. There‘s something majestic and awe-inspiring about a massive, muscular dog with a calm, confident demeanor. When I first encountered an Ambullneo Mastiff, I was immediately struck by their commanding presence, balanced by the sweet, sensitive look in their soulful eyes. But as I researched more about this relatively new mastiff breed, I quickly realized that owning one of these extra-large dogs comes with an equally substantial price tag.

The Ambullneo Mastiff Story

The Ambullneo Mastiff is a very recently developed breed, with a history that only dates back to the 1980s. As the story goes, a breeder in Southern California crossed an English Mastiff male with a Neapolitan Mastiff female. Two puppies from the resulting litter were then bred to an American Pit Bull Terrier. This new line was further refined with the addition of Bullmastiff and American Bulldog, ultimately producing the Ambullneo Mastiff we know today.

Each of these component breeds brings unique traits to the Ambullneo mix. English Mastiffs provide the breed‘s signature size and gentle temperament. Neapolitan Mastiffs offer a protective, loyal nature. The Pit Bull adds to their athletic prowess and stamina. Bullmastiffs and American Bulldogs bring a confident, courageous streak to these dogs. The result is an extremely large but loving family protector on par with many guardian breeds.

According to Ambullneo breeder Tina Jackson of Elite Giants Kennel, it‘s this combination of an imposing appearance with an affectionate, intuitive personality that is attracting a growing number of owners. "These dogs are definitely not for everyone. But for experienced big dog lovers who want a formidable yet sensitive companion, the Ambullneo is hard to beat," Jackson explains.

Massive Size, Massive Costs

As one might expect, the Ambullneo‘s enormous size is the primary factor driving the high costs of ownership. According to the American Kennel Club, male Ambullneos weigh up to 200 lbs and stand about 30-32 inches at the shoulder. Females are somewhat smaller at around 120-170 lbs and 28-30 inches. But some individuals can grow even larger.

"My male Ambullneo Diesel is 220 lbs and still growing," says owner Erica Rodriguez. "Everything about owning him is supersized, from his crate to his raw food diet to his medication doses."

So what can prospective owners expect to pay for one of these giant dogs? Initial purchase price from a reputable breeder typically ranges from $1200-2500 for a puppy. Factors like the parent dogs‘ show record, breeder reputation, location and puppy color/markings can push prices toward the higher end of that scale.

Care Costs Average Yearly Estimate
Food $2000 (200 lbs/month at $2/lb)
Veterinary Care $800-1200
Training/Socialization $300-500
Supplies (Crate, bed, toys, etc.) $500-800
Total $3600 – 4500

The Importance of Health Testing

Given their immense size, Ambullneos are prone to a number of health issues that can be very costly to treat. Some of the most common problems seen in the breed include:

  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Eye disorders like cherry eye, ectropion, entropion
  • Heart conditions like cardiomyopathy
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Bloat/gastric torsion

"It‘s absolutely crucial for Ambullneo breeders to conduct extensive health testing on any dogs used for breeding," cautions veterinarian Dr. Emily Winston. "Issues like hip dysplasia and heart defects can be difficult and expensive to manage in a dog of this size."

Dr. Winston recommends potential buyers ask to see proof of health clearances on a puppy‘s parents before purchasing. "A higher price for a puppy from a breeder who does thorough testing can actually save you money in the long run versus a cheaper pup with unknown health history," she advises.

Training and Socialization Challenges

Like many guardian breeds, Ambullneos can be territorial and suspicious of strangers if not carefully socialized. Their powerful physique also necessitates extensive training to ensure they are safe and controllable in all situations.

Professional dog trainer Mark Hodges emphasizes that Ambullneo puppies need early, frequent exposure to different people, animals and environments. "These are confident dogs who can easily develop aggressive tendencies if not socialized properly. They need a strong, consistent leader who is committed to positive training methods," Hodges explains.

For Ambullneo owners, this means a significant investment of both money and time in training and socialization activities. Group puppy classes, private lessons, dog sports and ample public outings are all part of raising a well-adjusted gentle giant. Expect to spend at least $300-500 per year on training, not including your time.

The Bond of a Lifetime

Despite the daunting costs of owning an Ambullneo Mastiff, most owners say the powerful bond they share with these perceptive, loyal dogs more than justifies the expense. There‘s an undeniable allure to having such a massive, impressive dog who is so deeply devoted to you and your family.

But that doesn‘t mean life with a giant breed is always easy. I remember puppy-sitting an Ambullneo named Tank who quickly taught me the importance of securing my garbage can. After leaving him alone for just an hour, I came home to find the 175-lb "puppy" happily shredding the remains of my trash all over the kitchen. Thankfully he was much more interested in licking the spaghetti sauce off my face than scolding.

"You have to have a sense of humor owning an Ambullneo," breeder Tina Jackson confirms. "Yes, they‘ll bust through a $50 Kevlar toy like tissue paper. They‘ll clear your coffee table with one swipe of that huge tail. They‘ll decide a priceless heirloom rug is the perfect chew toy. But they‘ll also be the first to comfort you when you‘re down. The one who always has your back. The best friend who sees your soul even on your worst days. For me and so many others, that kind of unwavering love is worth every penny."

After all, aren‘t the biggest dogs so often the biggest loves in our lives?
