Can I use my PC with Apple TV?

Apple TV offers several ways to connect with and use content from a Windows PC. While the experience is not as seamless as on Mac, there are options like AirPlay, Home Sharing and third-party apps that allow you to mirror screens, access media libraries and stream games from a PC to Apple TV.

Ways to Connect PC and Apple TV

Here are some of the main ways you can use your PC with Apple TV:

1. AirPlay

AirPlay allows you to wirelessly mirror your PC‘s screen or extend your display to Apple TV. You can mirror your entire desktop or only one monitor if using a multi-monitor setup. Specific apps like QuickTime Player, PowerPoint etc. can also be AirPlayed independently.

To use AirPlay, your PC and Apple TV must be on the same Wi-Fi network. On Windows 10/11, open the Action Center and click Connect to enable AirPlay. Select your Apple TV and choose to mirror or extend your display.

2. Home Sharing

Home Sharing lets you access your iTunes media library on Apple TV. Enable Home Sharing in iTunes on your Windows PC. On Apple TV, sign in with the same Apple ID under Settings > Users and Accounts > Home Sharing. Your PC‘s media will now be available in the Computers section on Apple TV.

3. Apple TV App

You can install the Apple TV app on Windows 10/11 from the Microsoft Store. Sign in with your Apple ID to gain access to Apple TV+ originals, channels and more. Streaming and downloading for offline viewing is supported.

4. Steam Link

Steam Link app allows you to stream games from a Windows PC to Apple TV. Just download the app on your Apple TV, pair it with your PC on the same network and launch games on your computer to play them on your TV.

Using Home Sharing between PC and Apple TV

Follow these steps to set up Home Sharing between your Windows PC and Apple TV:

  1. On your Windows PC, open iTunes and enable Home Sharing in the Advanced menu. Sign in with your Apple ID when prompted.

  2. On your Apple TV, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Home Sharing.

  3. Sign in using the same Apple ID you entered on iTunes.

  4. Your PC and Apple TV must be connected to the same home Wi-Fi network.

Once linked, open the Computers app on your Apple TV to access shared movies, TV shows, music and more from your iTunes library. Anything purchased via your Apple ID will be available.

Watching Apple TV+ on a Windows PC

To enjoy Apple original movies and shows on a Windows laptop or desktop, here‘s what to do:

  1. On your Windows 10 or 11 PC, open the Microsoft Store app.

  2. Search for "Apple TV" and download the Apple TV app.

  3. After installing, open the app and sign in using your Apple ID credentials.

  4. Browse or search for Apple TV+ exclusives like Ted Lasso, Severance, See etc. and click on a title to start streaming.

  5. Downloading for offline viewing is also supported.

The Apple TV app experience is very similar to what you get on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. You can access TV channels, movies and shows purchased from iTunes as well.

Tips for Streaming PC to Apple TV

Here are some tips to improve performance when streaming or mirroring your PC display to Apple TV:

  • Use a wired Ethernet connection to your Apple TV instead of Wi-Fi to prevent lag and buffering issues.

  • Adjust your PC‘s display resolution to match the Apple TV‘s output (1080p or 4K). Higher PC resolution causes scaling issues.

  • Close any CPU or GPU-intensive applications on your PC when streaming games or mirroring screens.

  • If experiencing latency or choppy video, check your router settings and internet bandwidth. Prioritize the Apple TV for best results.

  • For AirPlay, use the AirPlay 2 protocol on Windows 10/11 for the most efficient streaming experience.

  • Position your PC and Apple TV closer together if possible, and avoid obstructions between the devices.

Steam Link on Apple TV: Playing PC Games

Steam Link allows you to stream your PC gaming library to Apple TV. Here‘s how to set it up:

  1. Install Steam on your Windows PC and log into your Steam account.

  2. Download the Steam Link app on your Apple TV from the App Store.

  3. Open Steam Link on Apple TV and select Add Computer. Choose your PC.

  4. On your PC, launch a compatible game through Steam. It will now show up on your Apple TV.

  5. Choose the game title on your Apple TV and your PC will automatically stream the game to your TV.

Pair an Xbox, Playstation or MFi controller to your Apple TV to easily control the PC game. Ensure your PC and Apple TV are connected to the 5GHz Wi-Fi band for minimum lag.

Playing Media from PC on Apple TV

In addition to Home Sharing, you can play photos, music and videos stored on your Windows PC on Apple TV in a few different ways:

  • Via AirPlay: Open media files in apps like QuickTime Player, Photos or iTunes on your PC and AirPlay to Apple TV.

  • Media Server Apps: Install third-party media server software like Plex or Kodi on your PC and access libraries on Apple TV.

  • From External Drives: Copy files to a USB drive and plug it directly into your Apple TV.

Ensure your media files are in formats supported by Apple TV, such as MP4, MOV, M4A, MP3, JPG. Using a wired network connection helps avoid buffering issues when streaming high bitrate files.

Compatibility with PCs

Apple TV can be used with Windows laptops and desktops with the following:

  • Intel or AMD processor

  • Windows 10 version 1803 or later

  • Minimum 2GB RAM

  • HDMI port, USB port

  • iTunes 12.10 or later

  • Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac compatible router

For full 4K HDR streaming, an HDMI 2.0 port supporting HDCP 2.2 is required. Always use the original cables that came with your Apple TV for stability. Performance is best with newer PCs as AirPlay 2 and Home Sharing require adequate processing power.

PC vs Mac – Which Works Better?

While most functionality is available using a PC, the experience of using Apple TV is better with a Mac since the integration is tighter. Streaming is smoother, apps like Music and TV sync seamlessly via iCloud, and you don‘t need separate apps for AirPlay and Home Sharing. Gaming with Steam Link is also more reliable on Macs.

However, Windows users can still enjoy Apple TV+ shows, access their iTunes libraries, mirror screens and stream games. For the best experience, use a wired network connection and make sure your PC meets the minimum hardware requirements. The convenience may be worth the small trade-offs for many users.
