How many active players does Black Desert have?

According to ActivePlayer.io, the fantasy MMORPG Black Desert Online has around 200,000 daily active players as of 2022. This makes it one of the most populated and active MMORPGs currently available.

What Makes Black Desert So Popular in 2022?

Black Desert stands out from other MMORPGs for a few key reasons that retain its large playerbase:

  • The combat utilizes flashy animations and complex key combinations, with skills chaining together seamlessly. Compared to tab-target games like WoW, the real-time action combat feels extremely satisfying.

  • There is no daily or weekly time gate on progression. You can grind and progress at your own pace, with meaningful upgrades always within reach.

  • Activities like farming, sailing, crafting, and worker empires create lots of gameplay variety beyond combat. The world feels vibrant and lived in.

  • New classes, regions, endgame raids, and gear added every 3-4 months keeps the experience feeling fresh. The developers are very responsive to feedback.

  • Deep character customization and lifeskills allow you to roleplay in many ways, not just min/maxing for combat.

In my opinion as a long-time BDO player, these core design pillars retain players for the long haul and constantly draw new ones in. Even after hundreds of hours, meaningful progression always feels within reach.

Black Desert‘s Revenue and Popularity Continue to Grow

As a buy-to-play game with an optional subscription, Black Desert has grossed over $1 billion in lifetime revenue as of 2021 according to developer Pearl Abyss. The cash shop contains mostly cosmetics, pets, and convenience items – providing revenue while keeping pay-to-win in check.

Player numbers and revenue show consistent growth over the years. Here‘s a quick snapshot of Black Desert‘s revenue history:

Year Revenue
2016 $100 million
2017 $260 million
2018 $330 million
2019 $400 million
2020 $600 million
2021 $1 billion

The game also has over 30 million registered users. And it remains one of the most watched MMORPGs on Twitch, with a dedicated streaming community.

The Enhancement System – The Good and Bad

Now let‘s talk about one of the most divisive parts of Black Desert – the enhancement and gear progression system.

Enhancing gear involves using Black Stones to increase gear from +1 up to +20, with each upgrade having a chance to fail and destroy the item. Building failstacks improves success rate. The system is highly RNG, with even +1 enchants able to fail repeatedly.

The Good:

  • Always having upgrade attempts within reach creates a constant drip feed of progression.

  • Failing enchants isn‘t a total loss, as failstacks improve future success rate.

  • The feeling when you finally land that big upgrade is extremely rewarding and addictive.

The Bad:

  • Massive timesink and frustration dealing with constant RNG and failures.

  • Getting to the highest gear levels requires astronomical luck or money.

-Balancing failstack building vs attempting enchants gets complex and difficult.

There‘s certainly an argument that the enhancement system relies too heavily on frustration and RNG. But it does provide endless progression for those who enjoy chasing upgrades.

Black Desert Continues to Thrive in a Crowded Genre

Despite being over 8 years old, Black Desert continues to hold its own in the crowded MMORPG genre. With regular content updates and a truly massive amount of gameplay systems, there‘s always something new to try. And the fast-paced action combat never gets old.

While certainly not perfect, the developers have shown a commitment to listening to player feedback and continuously improving the game. As someone who has played for years, I always come back to BDO between content droughts in other MMOs.

So if you enjoy fluid combat, sandbox progression, and don‘t mind RNG enhancements, give Black Desert a try. With over 200,000 daily players immersed in its world, now is a great time to join one of the healthiest MMORPGs around.
