Is an RTX 3060 Ti worth it in 2026? Absolutely.

If you‘re a gamer looking for a new GPU that delivers excellent 1080p and 1440p performance at a reasonable price, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is hands down one of the best options out there. Even in 2024, the 3060 Ti remains a very worthwhile purchase. Let‘s dive into why.

TLDR: With performance on par with the RTX 3070, impressive ray tracing abilities, DLSS support and an MSRP of just $399, the 3060 Ti hits the sweet spot for high fps 1080p and 1440p gaming. It‘s overkill for esports titles and can even handle some 4K. Despite ongoing limited availability, if you can grab one near MSRP the 3060 Ti is absolutely worth it in 2024 and beyond.

What Makes the RTX 3060 Ti So Great?

The RTX 3060 Ti first launched in December 2020, targeting high frame rate 1080p and 1440p gaming. Right from the outset, it delivered excellent performance for the price. But what exactly makes this card so good?

Powerful GA104 GPU – It uses the same GPU as the RTX 3070, the GA104. Nvidia simply disabled some cores to differentiate the two. Still, with 4864 CUDA cores and fast 8GB GDDR6 memory, it provides great 1080p/1440p muscle.

Superb Gaming Performance – In terms of fps across top games, the 3060 Ti sits around 10-15% behind the 3070 and 30-40% above the 3060. Here‘s an extended look at how it handles both 1080p and 1440p gaming:

As you can see, 1080p gaming is a breeze with fps well above 60 in even the most demanding titles. 1440p is very doable as well if you don‘t mind optimizing settings in some games. According to Tom‘s Hardware, the 3060 Ti averaged 87 fps at Ultra settings across a suite of games at 1440p.

Excellent Ray Tracing/DLSS – With dedicated RT and tensor cores, the 3060 Ti also enables settings like ray traced reflections, shadows and DLSS in supported games while maintaining very playable frame rates, especially with DLSS.

For example, Hardware Unboxed found the 3060 Ti averaged 57 fps in Control at 1440p max settings with ray tracing on and DLSS set to Quality. That‘s mighty impressive for a $399 card. DLSS is a game changer.

Competitive Pricing – Considering its performance level, Nvidia priced the 3060 Ti very competitively at just $399. As we‘ll see though, pricing and availability didn‘t quite play out as expected.

How Does the RTX 3060 Ti Stack Up Against the Competition?

The graphics card market looked quite different when the 3060 Ti launched in late 2020. Top competitors at the time included:

• AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT – Faster than the RTX 2070 but slower than the 3060 Ti. Lacked ray tracing and DLSS.

• Nvidia RTX 2060 Super – RTX features but significantly slower performance and higher price.

• AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT – Faster than the RTX 2060 but slower than 3060 Ti, no ray tracing or DLSS.

AMD has since launched their RDNA 2 cards, with the closest rival being the Radeon RX 6600 XT which has an MSRP of $379.

In terms of average fps across various games and resolutions, the 3060 Ti is about 10% faster than the 6600 XT according to testing by Tom‘s Hardware and others. The AMD card does have some advantages like more VRAM (8GB vs 12GB) and better mining performance. But for pure gaming, the 3060 Ti remains the leader between the two.

Nvidia also offers a compelling platform with advanced features like DLSS, great drivers and developer support. So the 3060 Ti still holds up very well against AMD‘s new offerings.

Availability and Pricing: The Big Catch

Now for the bad news. While Nvidia announced an excellent $399 MSRP for the 3060 Ti, availability has been extremely limited since launch and ongoing supply chain issues continue to constrain production.

In December 2020 reviews went live, but general availability was basically non-existent until early 2021. And units that did appear sold out in minutes.

Even once supply improved, prices at most retailers have remained well above the MSRP due to huge demand from gamers and miners:

As you can see, prices have only recently started approaching the official MSRP after over two years. But paying $100+ over MSRP is still the norm at most major retailers. Deals can sometimes be found, but you need to be extremely vigilant.

The key is that if you can manage to snag a 3060 Ti near MSRP (ideally under $450), it‘s absolutely worth it. But with inflated pricing, the value proposition diminishes.

Should You Buy the 3060 Ti in 2024?

Given its impressive 1080p and 1440p gaming capabilities, support for ray tracing/DLSS and performance that matches or beats the competition, the RTX 3060 Ti remains one of the best mid-range graphics cards on the market, even in 2024.

If you‘re building a new high-performance gaming PC and manage to find one at a reasonable price, it will serve you well for many years.

However, with next-gen RTX 4000 series and Radeon RX 7000 cards expected later this year, upgrading to the 3060 Ti makes less sense if you already have a decent card like an RTX 2000 series or RX 5000 series GPU. It may be prudent to wait for the next generation at this point.

But for those starting fresh with a new build, as long as you can get your hands on one without overpaying too much, the RTX 3060 Ti is a gaming beast that will not disappoint!
