Is Koraidon a Bike? Examining Pokemon Scarlet/Violet‘s Cycling Legendary

No, Koraidon cannot actually be ridden like a bicycle, despite its rather convincing wheeled design. But how exactly does this mysterious Legendary Pokemon function? What is the secret behind its bike-like appearance? Let‘s find out!

The Wheels are Just for Show

While Koraidon‘s two large disc-shaped protrusions may resemble bike wheels or propellers at first glance, they sadly do not act as such. During normal movement, Koraidon runs along on four sturdy legs, with its wheel-like ornaments hovering inches above the ground, not making contact.

I can confirm based on my own experience adventuring with Koraidon that it does not bike around trails – those wheels are decorative! Koraidon has no problems sprinting swiftly on all fours without needing to utilize its circular attachments at all.

Koraidon‘s Stats and Abilities Hold Up as Legendary

Despite not living up to the "bike Pokemon" idea, Koraidon still possesses formidable attributes befitting its status as a Legendary. At Level 100, it boasts excellent Attack and Defense scores of 170 and 145 respectively, on par with previous generation mascots. With Dragon/Fighting as its type combination, very few Pokemon can safely switch in against it.

Its signature move, Collision Course, hits brutally hard coming off that towering 170 Attack stat. Koraidon‘s wide movepool of boosting, priority, and coverage moves make it a threat in competitive play as well. While not deemed "broken", it has more than enough tools to make its presence felt.

All in all, Koraidon has the stats and battle capabilities expected of a region‘s Legendary Pokemon, if not surpassing some recent ones. It fills the role admirably from a gameplay perspective.

Riding Koraidon Transforms It Into a Noble Steed

Players cannot ride directly on Koraidon‘s wheels, but they still can mount it as a high-speed partner. After completing Paldea‘s intro segment, Koraidon adopts a different stance better suited for carrying a rider on its back.

With this transformation, Koraidon serves as an all-terrain mount rivaling previous ride Pokemon like Gogoat or Sharpedo. It can briskly run across land, surf through waters, and even climb up clifftops and fly through the skies!

The saddle-shaped section on its back provides a place for trainers to comfortably sit as they control Koraidon‘s movement. A loyal Legendary steed, but not quite a bicycle.

The Wheels Aid Koraidon in Other Ways

So if not for riding or running, what exactly is the purpose of Koraidon‘s ring-shaped protrusions? According to official sources, they help stabilize Koraidon and provide propulsion when swimming or scaling steep surfaces.

The wheels essentially act as flippers in water, letting Koraidon pivot and propel itself smoothly while swimming. They also keep Koraidon balanced as it climbs up sheer cliffsides and other precarious positions.

So while useless for cycling on land, the wheels still grant valuable amphibious benefits – a creative way to explain the bike-like aesthetic!

Koraidon‘s Character and Lore Among Legendaries

How does Koraidon fit into the grand tradition of Legendary Pokemon over the generations? As Scarlet/Violet‘s cover mascot, Koraidon draws parallels to similar ancient, powerful beasts like Groudon/Kyogre or Yveltal/Xerneas.

However, Koraidon exhibits a surprisingly docile, friendly nature when interacting with players. It happily accepts sandwiches from the protagonist early on, establishing an amiable bond right away. This sets it apart from more feral-seeming predecessors.

I enjoyed Koraidon‘s loyalty and charm over the course of my journey. It felt like a steadfast companion, not just an intimidatingLegendary to collect. Those sandwiches really won it over!

The Design Process Behind Koraidon‘s Unique Aesthetic

According to interviews with developers GameFreak, Koraidon underwent an extensive design phase to achieve its distinct bipedal, vaguely draconic appearance. Concept art shows quadrupedal forms were considered initially before adding the wheels.

The designers felt large ring-shaped protrusions on its torso helped convey Koraidon‘s cyclical longevity and harmonious personality. The contrast between the tough dragon-like body and almost comical wheels creates visual interest.

As GameFreak‘s art director noted: "We wanted to see how far we could push the bike concept on a creature design…to a point of absurdity while still retaining an awe-inspiring form."

Estimating Koraidon‘s Value as a Unique Legendary

Given its immense rarity as a one-per-game Legendary Pokemon, just what could Koraidon‘s price tag be? Previous event-exclusive Mythicals like Mew and Celebi have sold online for $200-$400 in recent years.

As a brand new Legendary, obtainable only by progressing through Scarlet/Violet, Koraidon likely commands an even higher premium. Listings for legit, uncloned Koraidons could easily exceed $500+ given its uniqueness!

Of course for regular players, the true value of their Koraidon lies in the irreplaceable bond formed while adventuring together. But collectors and completists pay big money for exclusive Legendaries!

In Closing

While not the rideable bike some expected, Koraidon still succeeds as an intriguing Legendary Pokemon with competitive strengths and a charming personality. Its unorthodox wheeled design creates a unique aesthetic that GameFreak leveraged into an amphibious advantage.

My own time with Koraidon proved an enjoyable experience – sandwiches bring you a long way! So even without being a working bicycle, Koraidon earned its place among the pantheon of Legendary Pokemon. Just don‘t try pedaling those wheels!
