Is Xenoblade Chronicles 3 a AAA Game? Not Quite, But Still a Must-Play

After analyzing Xenoblade Chronicles 3‘s budget, development team size, production values, and more, I don‘t believe it fully qualifies as a traditional AAA console game. However, it delivers one of the most immense and engrossing JRPG experiences on the Nintendo Switch. Any RPG fan owes it to themselves to play this excellent adventure.

Evaluating Xenoblade 3‘s AAA Credentials

The term "AAA game" refers to games produced by major publishers with very large budgets and development teams. Some key criteria:

  • Budgets over $50+ million on average
  • Teams of hundreds of developers
  • Target platforms are PC, PlayStation, and Xbox
  • Top-tier graphics, acting, and production values
  • Heavily marketed worldwide

When looking at Xenoblade Chronicles 3:

  • Development team – Over 400 Monolith Soft developers worked on it according to producer Genki Yokota. This meets AAA team size expectations.
  • Graphics and production values – As a Switch exclusive, its graphics don‘t match Xbox/PlayStation AAA levels, but are excellent by Switch standards. The sweeping soundtrack and voice acting also impress.
  • Marketing and hype – Nintendo marketed it heavily at E3 2021 and its social channels, but didn‘t receive the marketing blitz of say, God of War Ragnarok.
  • Platform – The Switch install base can‘t match Xbox/PlayStation. Switch games rarely achieve over 10 million sales typically seen by AAA franchises.
  • Genre – Most AAA games are shooters or action adventures. While RPGs like Cyberpunk 2077 meet AAA criteria, JRPGs rarely do.

Based on these factors, I don‘t consider Xenoblade Chronicles 3 a true AAA console game on par with the latest installments of Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty. It doesn‘t quite have the technical achievements, mainstream appeal, or mass market sales potential those games aim for.

However, these classifications aren‘t definitive rules. Among Switch releases, Xenoblade 3 certainly ranks among the most ambitious and high-quality in terms of scope, production values, and content.

Why Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is Worth Playing

Regardless of genre or technical classifications, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 provides one of the most outstanding and memorable RPG experiences I‘ve had in years. Here‘s a deeper look at why it‘s absolutely worth your time:

A Massive World Brimming with Content

Xenoblade Chronicles 3‘s world is simply jaw-dropping in scope and density. As producer Koh Kojima revealed, it‘s over 5x larger than previous Xenoblade games with huge diversity in landscapes. Lush forests, scorching deserts, and sprawling snowfields are just a few of the biomes you‘ll traverse. Players can easily sink 60-100 hours into exploring the world and completing side quests alone.

That massive scale never feels empty or repetitive either. Vibrant settlements and lush wildlife populate the landscapes. There‘s visual spectacle around every corner.

Satisfying Real-Time Combat

Xenoblade 3 executes real-time combat exceptionally well. Chaining together auto-attacks, Arts skills, and powerful Talent Arts to topple larger foes provides great strategic depth. The interplay between your frontline fighter and ranged Healer adds fun team dynamics. I also love how enemies roam and live in the open world rather than appear out of thin air.

Late game enemies require masterful use of combat mechanics like Interlinks that let you control two characters at once. But thoughtful progression systems prevent combat from ever becoming overwhelming.

Combat Element Description
Auto-Attacks Landing auto-attacks builds Talent Gauge needed for powerful Arts
Arts Special skills with cooldowns that inflict major damage
Talent Arts High-powered moves fueled by Talent Gauge
Interlinks Fuse two characters together to control both simultaneously

Storytelling That Sticks With You

On the story front, the tale of six soldiers caught in the tragedy of war kept me invested from start to finish. Political tensions between rival nations, thought-provoking themes of life and death, and quiet character moments punctuate the grand spectacle. The writers handle heavy moments with grace and humanity.

Side quests also feature full voice acting and narrative arcs that made me care about side characters. The excellent localization and performances (especially in the English dub) bring the entire experience to life.

Rewarding Progression and Customization

Leveling up characters and tailoring them to your playstyle proves very addictive. The soul-like Gem crafting system that lets you socket stat bonuses and abilities into weapons/armor offers tons of flexibility. Mastering Interlink combos with the cast of 10 unlockable heroes provides fun team building opportunities.

While combat starts simple, the layered character building and party customization options unlocking over time add tremendous depth without becoming overwhelming.

A Technical Showcase of the Switch‘s Power

On a technical level, developer Monolith Soft has done wonders pushing the aging Switch hardware to its limits. Sweeping vistas and snappy combat run smoothly despite the massive game world. Character models showcase impressive detail. Mechanical enemies like Tirkin and technology like Mustasha shine with stylish art direction. The soundtrack stands toe-to-toe with some of the best JRPG music.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 certainly rests outside the bounds of traditional AAA development. But as a Switch exclusive, it stands head and shoulders above its peers with one of the most expansive and engrossing worlds on the platform.

The Verdict: A Can‘t-Miss JRPG Experience

After analyzing its scope, production values, content quality, and reception, I believe Xenoblade Chronicles 3 falls just short of full AAA status defined by franchises like Assassin‘s Creed. Budget constraints and its handheld-only platform hold it back from matching the technical benchmarks expected of AAA.

But those classifications hardly matter when the sheer artistry, care, and vision poured into the game shine through. Despite not having the AAA badge, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 provides one of the deepest RPG experiences out there and immediately enters the conversation for best Switch game.

Any RPG fan owes it to themselves to visit the grand world of Aionios. The memorable journey rivals even the top AAA single player epics. For me, it stands tall as a masterpiece in interactive storytelling and worldbuilding that won‘t be leaving my mind any time soon.
