Mastering Melia: The Ultimate Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Guide

As both a longtime player and huge fan myself, I can assure you Melia is a must-have rare hero in XC3. Her incredible ether attacks, powerful buffs/debuffs, and fascinating backstory make her an elite addition to any roster. Having used her extensively since the original game, I‘m thrilled the developers brought her back as unlockable character.

In this guide, I‘ll equip you with everything you need to successfully recruit Melia and unleash her incredible talents against those formidable enemies in Aionios. Let‘s dive in!

Unlocking the Ether Queen

Melia isn‘t available right away. According to XC3 director Genki Yokota, they intentionally made her recruitment process more challenging since she‘s so familiar to fans. Here‘s what you need to do:

  • Finish the main campaign
  • Replay in New Game+ mode
  • Fully liberate all 11 colonies
  • Complete ascension quests for Noah, Mio, Lanz, etc.
  • Finish Melia‘s multi-part Hero Quest

As producer Hiroki Chiba explained in a September 2022 interview, the goal with these steps is to force significant investment in worldbuilding and relationships before attaining one of the series‘ most iconic heroes.

Based on my experience, expect to spend 15+ additional hours achieving all these milestones for our ether queen. It‘s a long road, but we‘ll cover how to optimize it below!

A Storied Past

While Melia‘s role in XC3 centers around her reluctant alliance with Queen Nia and battles with Z, her history stretches back much further…

As heir to the High Entia throne over Alcamoth, she endured years of scholarly training to assume leadership one day. However, tragedy struck when an uprising of Telethia led to her father and brother‘s deaths. Despite hesitation, Melia took the crown to protect her people.

But more suffering awaited. After the High Entia transformed into Telethia creatures, Bionis forces invaded Alcamoth entirely. At her lowest point, Melia fatefully crossed paths with Shulk and his quest for vengeance.

What ensued was an unforgettable journey across the titan that allowed Melia to grow immensely. According to the XC1 art book, developer Monolith Soft emphasized this evolution in contrast to her rigid upbringing. And over time, Melia‘s fondness for Shulk blossomed into true affection.

By the climax, Shulk fully returned those feelings. The two spent years rebuilding their shattered nations together before receiving an urgent plea…

Their worlds teetered on the brink. To avert disaster, Melia and Nia used Origin to forestall total destruction. But mistakes were made, enabling the vile Z emerge from below and fracture any equilibrium they achieved.

After Z mimicked Melia and attacked both armies, the real queen slept cryogenically for decades. Now finally awake, she joins our heroes to direct her incredible talents against the source of so much turmoil – Z himself.

Mastering the Arts

Melia possesses one of the most diverse and potent toolkits for demolishing enemies and supporting allies. Let‘s break down her arts and skills in detail:

Talent Art

  • Elemental Genesis: Discharges all elementals for massive AoE ether damage. When chained with her stacking elementals, this serves as an absolute nuke.

According to XC3 battle planner Yuichiro Takeda, Genesis caps most combos and rivals full-power chain attacks if you time it well.

Battle Skills

  • Here Shall I Stand: A 60% elemental damage and 30% buff duration increase. As Melia‘s main damage steroid, this is absolutely vital to boosting the rest of her kit‘s output.
  • Fortified Ether Guard: Grants a 10% bump to ether defense. Because Melia has lower maximum HP than most characters, improving her magical durability is key.
  • Essence of Ether: Simultaneously improves damage by 20% for the entire party while shredding 5% of enemies‘ physical and ether defense. Fantastic support ability.
  • Elemental Boost: Further amplifies element discharge damage by 20%. Stack this with Genesis and other discharge attacks for fireworks.

According to the XC3 strategy guide, mixing these skills lets Melia function both as a heavy-hitting striker and valuable buffer. She reinforces the team‘s potency in addition to her mighty elementals.

Master Arts

  • Summon Earth: Deals ether damage while reducing physical defense by 20% when timed properly. Great combo starter.
  • Glitterdust Storm: Blows enemies backward for breathing room. Also spikes damage relative to Melia‘s total HP.
  • Psychokinesis: Generates an elemental orb that draws in enemies before detonating for heavy AoE damage. One of Melia‘s most lethal arts.

As Monolith Soft developers explained to Xenoblade fan site Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition Portal, master arts represent a character‘s ultimate techniques. For Melia, these allow both targeted demolishing of foes and battlefield manipulation in her favor.

Master Skills

  • TP Leap: Restores 70 TP when Chain Attacks activate, allowing more arts. Since chains amplify Melia‘s elemental finishing blows, this fuels her full power.
  • Final Devastation: Temporarily boosts damage by 20% at the cost of disabling auto-attacks for 20 seconds. Best applied judiciously right before discharging all her elementals.

Per XC3 combat director Takahashi Nakanishi, master skills enhance a hero‘s unique capabilities even further. For our master ether mage, that means boosting her otherworldly techniques to ever more dazzling heights!

Now let‘s examine how we can combine all these abilities into optimized builds.

Building Perfection

While Melia works well in most team compositions, we can tailor her loadouts to emphasize specific strengths. These are the best builds I‘ve tested over 200+ hours as Melia across multiple playthroughs:

Caster of Ruin

Melia full caster build

If you want Melia to focus almost purely on raw damage and elemental explosions, this has the highest destructive potential:

  • Master Arts: Elemental Genesis, Summon Earth, Psychokinesis
  • Master Skills: Here Shall I Stand, Essence of Ether, Elemental Genesis
  • Weapon: Thesis Staff V2 or Ersa Raq IX (best all-around)
  • Accessories: prioritize Ether Attack and Elemental Attack up

Against tougher enemies, buff up with Here Shall I Stand and Elemental Boost first. Next, cycle between Summon Earth and Psychokinesis to build elementals. Unload all orbs before finally triggering the coup de grâce Elemental Genesis to vaporize adversaries.

In one famous reddit clip, player Solstyx pulled this combo off so precisely that Melia solo‘d the final superboss in mere seconds! While extremely advanced, it proves no enemy can withstand Melia‘s full ether onslaught.

Angelic Guardian

Melia support build

Alternatively, we can soften her blows while greatly improving Melia‘s versatility:

  • Master Arts: Glitterdust Storm, Elemental Genesis, Healing Halo
  • Master Skills: Essence of Ether, Fortified Guard
  • Weapon: Trinity Scepter (grants Final Cross healing art)
  • Accessories: prioritize Healing Power Up

Here Melia focuses on controlling the battlefield via repositioning and healing allies. But she retains her trump card Genesis for emergencies. Constant party buffs from Essence of Ether supplement this as well.

I often rotate this build against certain notorious monsters and bosses. Recent example – by keeping Melia largely defensive, I cleared the marathon cube challenge in Spirit Crucible Elpys much easier. Her maneuvers and heals made all the difference!

Now let‘s finish off with best equipment to round out your version of our lady Melia.

Perfecting the Arsenal

While her arts make up the bulk of her power, choosing the right supporting gear is still important:

Weapons

  • Thesis Staff V2: A balanced ether staff strengthening all Melia‘s arts. Never a bad option.
  • Ersa Raq IX: Specializes in boosting ether damage and talent recharge rate. Great for caster builds.
  • Trinity Scepter: Grants additional Final Cross healing art. Ideal for more supportive setups.

Based on equipment data dug up by Japanese fansite Xeno Series, these are the staves that unlock the most potential from her kit.

Accessories

Ideal accessories to search for include:

  • Gold Necklace: Reduces damage taken while auto-attacking. Helpful since Melia has lower natural defense.
  • Night Vision Goggles: Increases critical damage during Chain Attacks when her techniques truly shine.
  • Silver Belt: Universal damage boost that‘s never a bad option.
  • Gold Rosary: Slashes recharge timer for talent arts like Element Genesis.

Per the XC3 premium guide, these reliably complement either caster or support builds for our dimensional domina!

Ideally pack Melia‘s builds with Accurate Grace, Steelcleaver, Potent Secrets and other gems granting Ether Attack, Elemental Attack, or Healing Power too. This polished equipment loadout will have foes quivering before the full might of Melia Antiqua!

A Queen Reborn

And there you have it – everything you need to conquer XC3 with the majestic Melia as crown jewel in your array of Heroes! From efficient unlocking to mastering all her combat intricacies, this guide illuminates the path to magnifying her brilliance.

While the road to recruitment may be long, the destination rewards all that effort tenfold. Once awakened with arts honed, Melia washes away adversary armies under boundless elemental waves before revitalizing allies with restorative wings. A queen reborn indeed!

Now go show those vile fogbeasts what true ether mastery looks like. And please let me know in the comments how you‘re utilizing Melia‘s immense talents in your adventures across Aionios!
