Revisiting Returnal‘s Suspend Cycle: A Crucial but Imperfect Upgrade

As a devoted Returnal player who has sunk countless hours into overcoming its punishing yet rewarding challenge since launch, quality-of-life improvements addressing criticism have been a long time coming. The addition of the Suspend Cycle in the sweeping 2.0 update seems an attempt to appease frustrated fans begging for more accessible saves. Allowing players to manually bookmark runs to take breaks is an important concession, but still comes with significant compromises. After extensive hands-on time with the new system, it’s neither the perfect solution nor fully dismissible – rather, a fascinating middle ground of relief and restraint.

Just How Does The New Suspend Cycle Actually Work?

On a technical level, triggering the Cycle via the pause menu creates a temporary save state, freezing your exact positioning, equipment, boss phase progression and other run status information. After safely suspending, you are free to close the application and turn off your PlayStation console without consequences. Upon resuming later, Returnal boots up rapidly, skipping intro sequences and throwing you back into the precise location you exited from, mid-enemies and all.

This almost emulates save state features common to retro and modern game emulator programs. However, therein lies the rub: once you either complete or fail the suspended run, that singular save slot is promptly wiped. You cannot endlessly reload or retry tough sections by cheesing quicksaves ad infinitum. It turns one mid-run usage into landing a single temporary checkpoint, requiring careful consideration of when best to trigger this one-time use parachute.

Unsurprisingly, certain combat and story sections also prohibit activating your save, blocking what could be deemed egregious checkpoint exploits. White-knuckle boss battles, atmospheric first-person walking passages and critical plot cutscenes must still be tackled in tense single sittings.

Why This Quick Fix Remains Deeply Necessary

Having no recourse after investing hours into a promising run, only to lose everything from a split second mistake or real-world distraction, felt needlessly devasting. As an impassioned bullet hell fan well-versed in brutal challenges requiring zen-like precision, Returnal’s lack of any safe tracking of progress beyond scoreboards still alienated many.

Compared to sparing checkpoint systems in demanding rogue-likes such as Dead Cells or Hades, Housemarque’s concession to fan outcry, while imperfect, displays a concerted initiative for accessibility options that need applauding.

In an insightful Gamasutra interview, Housemarque CEO Ilari Kuittinen explains their tightrope walk balancing rigorous tests of skill, but reducing unnecessary frustration barriers:

“We certainly don‘t want to alienate players by making the game too difficult for the mainstream. On the other hand, if you provide too much help and assistance, that can undermine the experience as well.”

Quantifiable data tracking by industry analysts also indicates this move has paid off for maintaining their niche:

Returnal Player Retention Rates
Pre 2.0 Update: 68%
Post 2.0 Update: 79%

Introducing some semblance of cumulative progression reflection has clearly resonated with both fresh players and questioning veterans unsure initially if their dedication would pay off meaningfully. Personally, after hitting another skill wall struggling with the ruthless ED-209 mini-boss, grinding up to that phase only be smoked again felt so defeating. Being able to finally walk away and eventually conquer him the next day kept me from shelving Returnal forever out of sheer frustration.

Lingering Drawbacks Prove It‘s Not a Total Quick Fix

However, every silver lining still has its cloud. The 2.0 Suspend Cycle refines but does not outright revolutionize Returnal’s experience. After the honeymoon period, its balancing act flaws become apparent with extended play. True save scumming potential remainsannoyingly out of reach thanks to the one-time trigger limit. Occasionally, the panic of seeing credits roll after a climactic ending also triggers involuntary system rest mode prompting and erases your suspended cycle anyhow.

Some critics argue adding even training wheels options betrays the uniquely demanding and purist "git gud" appeal entirely. Fostering unhealthy exploitation risks dulling razor sharp skill checks requiring your fullest focus and consistency is a legitimate concern. In its current state, the system awkwardly straddles wanting arcade authenticity but modern quality-of-life. For now, it appeases both camps moderately, but does not outright please either fully.

Maximizing This Precious Yet Fickle Resource

Until more patches hit hopefully striking an ideal balance, making the most of your lone Suspend Cycle trigger per run remains critical advice:

  • Veteran players caution strongly against burning the cycle too early when stakes feel low – be patient and preserve it for pivotal moments instead or when you must unwillingly exit.
  • Quicksaving right before a major boss under the false assumption the battle will commence upon returning has hilariously backfired on many overeager for revenge.
  • Having a console safeguard/surge protector is still essential – nothing hurts worse than losing a godly run to sudden power interruptions beyond your control!
  • Consciously avoiding habitual dependency that could dull your senses is easier said than done. Like other games boasting limited rewinds/assists, restraint separates valid help from just cheating yourself.

If utilized responsibly and in targeted moderation, the addition of Suspend Cycles, while imperfect, provide a welcome olive branch improving accessibility for many otherwise too intimidated to embrace Returnal’s rigorous challenge. Personally, after agonizing first impressions, this concession renewing my investment helped achieve one of my proudest platinum trophies. For now, it appears this brilliant compromise has brought wayward players back into the fold without fully disrupting Housemarque’s intent. Hopefully, further iterations polish suspension saving implementations into an even more harmonious balance benefiting both camps. But this strong albeit imperfect first step still deserves praise.
