The Glow Skin in Fortnite Costs Around $1,000
The Glow skin is one of the rarest, most coveted, and expensive skins you can find in Fortnite. Based on sales data, accounts with the Glow skin tend to sell for around $1,000 on average.
Let‘s take a deeper look at why this skin commands such an astronomical price.
Origins of the Glow Skin
First, some background on where this skin came from. The Glow outfit was first introduced in February 2019 as a part of an exclusive promotion with Samsung. It was only available for a limited time to players who purchased select Samsung Galaxy devices, such as the Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, or S10e.
After the promotion ended in 2019, the skin was vaulted and has never been rereleased or made available again. This makes Glow one of the rarest skins in Fortnite‘s history.
Rarity By the Numbers
Due to the short exclusivity window, it‘s estimated that only 1-2 million Fortnite players were ever able to get their hands on the Glow skin.
To put that into perspective, Fortnite has over 350 million registered players as of 2022. So less than 1% of all players own this skin.
Here are some stats on just how rare Glow is:
- Glow accounts for less than 0.5% of all registered Fortnite accounts
- It ranks #2 on lists of the rarest skin based on ownership numbers
- Fewer than 3 million Glow skins are estimated to exist
- Only surpassed in rarity by the Renegade Raider skin
So when you see this skin in a match, know you‘re looking at one of the rarest Fortnite collectibles ever.
Why So Expensive: Supply and Demand
Based on available sales data, the current average price for an account with just the Glow skin tends to be around $1,000. Accounts with the full Glow bundle including pickaxes, gliders, and wraps can sell for up to $1,500.
So what makes this skin so valuable? Simple economics – supply and demand.
Limited Supply: We established above that only 1-2 million accounts have the Glow skin. And that supply gets lower over time as accounts are lost or banned. This shrinking supply increases value through scarcity.
High Demand: The Glow skin is highly coveted among collectors, traders, and hardcore Fortnite fans. Its rarity and status symbol nature create immense demand. There are more buyers than available skins.
When you have an extremely limited supply and tons of demand, prices skyrocket. Hence the immense value of the Glow skin today.
What Drives Demand?
Let‘s dive deeper into why so many players covet the Glow skin:
-
Exclusivity: As it hasn‘t returned since 2019, no way for new players to obtain it. Creates prestige.
-
Status symbol: Owning rare skins like Glow is a flex and shows dedication. Especially for "OG" players.
-
Investment potential: As supply shrinks and demand grows, prices are likely to keep rising over time.
-
Competitive Edge: Some feel rare skins intimidate opponents and give a psychological edge. These are also known as "sweaty skins".
-
Collection: Skin collectors and completionists want to own the rarest items like Glow.
Owning iconic skins like Glow is a way for players to stand out and show off their OG status in the Fortnite world. It‘s human nature to want exclusivity and prestige.
Is the Glow Skin Worth Buying?
For most average Fortnite players, I can‘t recommend spending $1,000+ on a cosmetic skin. That‘s a lot of money for a game accessory.
However, for serious skin collectors, traders, and investors, obtaining an account with the Glow skin is seen as highly worthwhile long-term. Prices will likely continue rising over the next 5-10 years based on all market indicators.
While against Epic‘s Terms of Service, there is a thriving black marketplace to buy and sell rare Fortnite accounts. I do not recommend engaging in this – but many still do.
At the end of the day, skins have value because we assign value to them. The high price of the Glow skin comes down to perception of rarity and status. If enough people want it, prices stay high.
Personally, I think the skin looks amazing and as a collector I‘d love to own an account with it one day. But I‘d only buy from a trusted seller at a reasonable price. In the meantime, I‘ll keep hunting in-game and hoping Epic releases more cool skins for all to enjoy!
