Demystifying the Art of 5-Betting in Poker

Hey friend! Have you ever been completely stumped when facing a 5-bet? Those rare occurrences when the action gets raised and re-raised several times preflop, culminating in a 5-bet that puts you in a really tough spot?

I feel your pain. Early in my poker career, I would just freeze up and dump my hand when I got 5-bet. It seemed like an automatic indicator of AA/KK and I was just lost.

But over the years, through continuously studying advanced theory and crunching the numbers, I‘ve gained a much deeper understanding of 5-betting strategy.

And today I want to pass that knowledge on to you!

In this guide, we‘ll cover:

  • Optimal 5-betting ranges based on position
  • The art of 5-bet sizing
  • Defending against 5-bets and continuing correctly postflop
  • When to 5-bet in tournaments vs cash games
  • Exploiting recreational players who overfold to 5-bets

And plenty more 5-betting wizardry.

So get ready to master this advanced poker concept and gain a big edge over your opponents!

When Should You Consider 5-Betting?

Let‘s start by looking at a common spot where 5-betting comes into play:

6-max 100bb effective stacks:

BTN open-raises to 3bb. SB 3-bets to 10bb. BTN calls. You are the SB – should you consider 5-betting?

Because you close the action by 3-betting from the blinds, your range can be slightly wider here compared to 3-betting from the BU.

Against an early position open, super strong hands like AA/KK/AK are clear 5-bet jams. But adding in hands like QQ/JJ and AQs/AJs is reasonable too given the dead money already in the pot.

Here‘s a standard 5-bet/jam range from the SB in this spot:

AA, KK, AK
QQ, JJ, AQs, AJs

77-88, ATs, KQs

You‘ll notice I included some weaker suited broadways and pocket pairs like 77-88 as bluffs. We can do this because:

a) Dead money in the pot gives us good immediate odds.

b) Our opponent‘s continuing range is fairly wide from the BU.

Let‘s quantify this by looking at the equity of 77 against a BU calling range:

Equity Realization Table

You can see 77 has 34.5% equity here against a BU calling range of {22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q2s+, J8s+, T8s, 97s}.

Based on the Minimum Defense Frequency (MDF) formula:

MDF = (Pot Size) / (Pot Size + Amount to Call)

The MDF here is (13bb / 23bb) = 56.5%

This means we need at least 56.5% equity to defend optimally by 5-bet jamming. And 77 has 34.5% equity – so it‘s an easy bluff candidate.

You can do similar equity math on your end to build optimal bluffing and value 5-bet ranges against different opponent tendencies.

This is just a taste of the in-depth strategic analysis you can do with 5-bets. Let‘s keep leveling up our knowledge!

5-Betting by Position – Opening Ranges & Strategies

Now let‘s look at complete 5-betting ranges based on our position and the opener‘s position.

These visually illustrate how 5-betting frequency changes in different spots.

5-Betting in the Blinds

5-betting ranges from blinds

A few key notes:

  • Wider value range against EP openers
  • Wider bluffing range against BTN/CO openers
  • High frequency from the SB where we close action

5-Betting from UTG to the Hijack

5-betting ranges UTG to Hijack

Things to notice:

  • Very narrow value range of just AA/KK/AK
  • Minimal bluffing frequencies given OOP
  • Much tighter overall since we don‘t close action

5-Betting the Button vs the Blinds

5-betting ranges BU vs blinds

Key takeaways:

  • Strong value range, adding in hands like AQs/JJ
  • Still limited bluffing frequencies OOP
  • Wider against SB who squeezed than BB

Study these ranges carefully from both sides – ask yourself if you‘re 5-betting or calling enough in these common spots.

But remember -Ranges are just a starting point. You still need to make exploitative adjustments!

Exploiting Recreational Players with Light 5-Bets

The recreational player pool has lots of leaks we can exploit with light 5-bet bluffing.

Fish tend to make big mistakes like:

  • Folding too much to 3-bets and 4-bets
  • Calling too wide from the blinds
  • Not 3-bet bluffing or 4-bet bluffing enough

This allows us to profitably 5-bet light against them.

For example, against a passive fish from the blinds I may 5-bet hands like:

  • A5s, K8s, Q9s, JTs, T9s, 98s
  • Small PPs like 22-66

I balance these bluffs with value bets of AA/KK/AK/AQ.

But I‘ll avoid triple barreling without the nuts because they tend to call down too light. Max value on earlier streets is key.

The beauty of light 5-betting is it allows us to scoop so many pots preflop against weaker opposition. They simply fold way too much!

And recreational players won‘t adjust and start 5-bet bluffing themselves – so we get to just print money with this tactic.

Determining Optimal 5-Bet Size

One key skill is learning how to size your 5-bets effectively. Let‘s take a closer look at this important aspect…

5-Bet Sizing by Stack Depth

5-bet sizing

You can see some general guidelines for 5-bet sizing:

  • At 50bb deep, bet around 3x the previous raise size
  • At 100bb deep, bet around 2.5x the previous raise
  • At 200bb+ deep, use a smaller 2x sizing

The deeper stacks call for a smaller sizing because there‘s greater implied odds available. A larger 5-bet risks folding out opponents‘ continuing range when they can call wider.

5-Betting for Value vs Bluffing

When using a 5-bet for value, you generally want to size down slightly compared to a bluff.

For example at 100bb deep:

Value 5-bet: 2.5x (Looks stronger)
Bluff 5-bet: 3x (Applies maximum pressure)

This makes your value range look more credible since it appears you want calls with strong hands.

Mastering 5-bet sizing takes practice, but will pay dividends by maximizing your long term EV!

Final Thoughts

Whew, that was quite an info dump on the intricate world of 5-betting! Here are the key lessons to take with you:

  • 5-bet ranges differ greatly based on yours and your opponent‘s position. Study the fundamentals.

  • Use equity tools to build optimal bluffing ranges based on MDFs and equity realization against calling ranges.

  • Size your 5-bets appropriately based on factors like stack depth, value betting vs bluffs.

  • Exploit fish by 5-betting wider for value and as bluffs when they underdefend.

  • Remember to balance passive and aggressive lines postflop after 5-betting, don‘t become too predictable.

Got all that? Great! Now get out there and start leveraging the power of the 5-bet to dramatically increase your winrate. You‘ve got this!
