The mysterious High Table that oversees the criminal underworld consists of 12 seats occupied by the highest-ranking crime lords around the globe. To sit at one of these seats is to control an entire criminal territory or organization. For instance, the character Aurelio represents the Italian Mafia‘s seat at the table.

"9" refers to the Ruska Roma – the elite team of nine deadly assassins who serve as the High Table‘s personal security force and clean-up crew, clad in distinctive gold armor. Led by Zero, the Ruska Roma are a clear threat anytime they show up to hunt John. Their special skills and unquestioning loyalty make them significant adversaries.

Ranking the Most Lethal John Wick Characters

8. Ernest

The hulking bodyguard Ernest lacks finesse but makes up for it with raw power and tolerance for punishment. He tosses John Wick around like a ragdoll in their fight outside the Director‘s museum. Ernest just refuses to go down despite taking John‘s best shots.

7. Cassian

Cassian proves himself John Wick‘s equal, nearly killing the legendary hitman multiple times. He matches John‘s tactical thinking and physical skills, surviving even a stab to the aorta. Their intensely competitive dynamic highlights Cassian‘s prowess.

6. Sofia

As manager of the Moroccan Continental, Sofia has her own personal army of desert warriors. Her decision to back John Wick brings critical armored vehicles and firepower to bear against the High Table. Sofia is not to be underestimated within her domain.

5. The Shinobi

This unnamed Shinobi bodyguard surprises John multiple times with his blinding speed and knowledge of pressure points. He turns John‘s own pistol against him by precisely striking nerve clusters. The Shinobi‘s unconventional fighting style catches even Wick off guard.

4. Ares

The Chief Enforcer of the New York Continental, Ares matches John Wick blow for blow even without weapons. She uses her smaller size to maximum advantage, attacking from unexpected angles with ruthless efficiency. You do not want to break the rules on her watch.

3. Zero

As leader of the Ruska Roma assassins, Zero is instantly recognizable in his gold mask and armor. He pushes John Wick past his limits in their intense knife fight within the Continental, showcasing lethal skill with blades and hand-to-hand combat.

2. Caine

Described as a "master of assassination," Caine goes toe-to-toe with John Wick as his mentor and friend. According to the Director, only Caine has ever matched John‘s skills in a fight. Their brutal knife duel in Chapter 4 cements Caine as nearly John‘s equal in every regard.

After seeing him decimate legions of elite hitmen across three films and counting, I have zero doubt – John Wick stands alone as the apex predator of this fictional world. Even past his prime, John‘s speed, pain tolerance, tactical thinking and indomitable willpower are unmatched. He is the Baba Yaga, the vengeful ghost you pray you‘ll never encounter.
