A Brief History of Shinies: Born to Sparkle

Shiny Pokémon first appeared in 1999 with the launch of Pokémon Gold and Silver on the Game Boy Color. Game Freak programmers Hideki Sonoda and Shigeki Morimoto worked to develop these ultra-rare alternate colorations that could randomly appear in the wild.

At odds of approximately 1 in 8192, finding a Shiny felt like strikeing gold! They had no competitive edge in battle, existing purely to surprise and delight players. When encountered, Shinies arrived with a flurry of stars and shiny sound effects, cementing their status as prized collectibles.

The most famous early Shiny was the Red Gyarados at the Lake of Rage – an in-game guarateed encounter that gave us a taste of Shinies‘ vibrant potential. Fans were captivated.little did we know this was just the beginning of sparklepuff proliferation!

Over successive Generations, Shiny rates became increasingly generous:

In 2000, the Pokémon TCG Neo Destiny expansion introduced Shiny Pokémon to the card game under the name Shining Pokémon. As soon as I cracked those first booster packs as a kid and saw the dazzling holofoil backgrounds, I was hooked!

The blinding shine evoked those iconic in-game sparkles, bringing Shinies to vivid life. And their rarity took collecting to the next level:

Unlike standard holofoil cards (about 1 per pack), Shining Pokémon appeared as secret rares beyond the normal set size. Print runs were exceedingly limited, estimated at only 1 Shining in every 72 packs!
