Dead Island 2 Skill Cards Ultimate Guide

As a zombie survival professional with over 500 hours spent perfecting my Dead Island 2 slayer builds, I‘ve broken down everything there is know about skill cards – the critical element that can elevate your gameplay from mundane to masterful.

Skill Cards – Your Combat Foundation

Before we dive deep on ideal card loadouts, let‘s establish a foundation of how skills function in Dead Island 2‘s visceral melee combat system. As you gain XP and level up, you unlock skill slots that correspond to:

Abilities: Movement and attack skills
Survivor: Defense and sustainability
Slayer: Single target and area damage
Numen: Fury mode enhancing skills

You equip cards to these slots to craft your playstyle – extreme glass cannon, unkillable tank, balanced skirmisher, or sadistic crowd crusher.

But first, an important rule of thumb I‘ve learned from playing with all the slayers: your Abilities and Survivor cards form the core of your build. Get those right first before optimizing for damage.

Now let‘s break down the cards that will take your skills from zero to hero.

Best Ability Cards

Ability cards enhance your movement and offense to hit harder, faster, time dodges/blocks better – whatever you need to send zombies flying in ragdoll chaos.

Ground Pound is arguably the most important. Having an AOE slam attack is crucial mob control, and the impact damage and force builds fury rapidly. I run this in every build.

Dash Strike complements Ground Pound perfectly as a mobility attack to blitz into crowds or pursue runners. Vital card.

Drop Kick seems basic, but having that launching double footed explosion solves so many crisis situations. And it hits HARD once upgraded.

Between Scream disabling mobs and Flying Kick executing lone stragglers, you‘ve got a versatile attack portfolio. I could run these 5 abilities exclusively and still top damage meters through the core gameplay loop they enable.

Top Survivor Cards

What good is pummeling zombies if you can‘t take a few dozen hits yourself? These survival skills separate the legends from the one-and-done scrubs.

Safety First is hands down the most reliable way to restore health mid-fight once you master timing blocks. Very consistent regen.

Rallying Cry removes annoying debuffs AND refills your health bar rapidly. Too useful not to run!

Safe Space adds insult to injury by damaging zombies around you when popping heals. Great for sticky rescues.

My personal favorite is Short Fuse – taking hits charges fury, incentivizing aggressive relentless play rewarded with satisfying explosive payoffs.

Those four survival cards will enable you to sustain long enough to massacre entire armies of zombies over time. But to truly rake in the kill counts, you need…

Most Powerful Slayer Skills

This is where your death dealer transformation begins. By the end game, slayer skills contributing flat damage, crits, procs and bonuses will contribute over 50% of your overall DPS.

Heavy Hitter‘s massive damage boost to heavy attacks melts even elite zombies in a few clean hits. Well worth the health tradeoff.

For sniping problematic zombies in the backline, nothing beats Skull Skewer – detonating heads with precise aim leads to extremely satisfying kills.

Corpse Bomb simplifies mob management by clearing out piles of bodies effortlessly through chained explosions.

And Unrelenting enables juggling combos against knocked down targets before they can recover. Lovely synergy for uninterrupted beatdowns.

Numerous other excellent slayer cards exist too – the ones you end up running depend heavily on weapon choice, team composition, and encounter specifics. But those four will consistently pump up the carnage.

Ideal Numen Cards

While slayer skills provide raw damage, numen skills enhance fury mode potency for temporary bursts of overpowered insanity.

Seismic Stomp makes maiming enemies extremely rewarding, with corpse explosions spam clearing out mobs while building fury to continue chains.

The infamous Glass Cannon enables absolutely ridiculous crit damage at low health for highlight worthy monster flattens. Very risky glass cannon playstyle card!

I often just default to Seismic Stomp for the reliable AOE fury building. But watching Glass Cannon deletion compilations never gets old.

Character Specific Innate Skills

While most cards work for anyone, some special innate skills give specific characters unique advantages.

Ryan wrecks with Retaliation boosting force after blocks and dodges, enabling fearsome counter attacking.

Dani‘s Bloodlust refunds tons of health rapidly slaying chaining targets during executor combos.

Jacob‘s Feral stacks increasing bonuses by attacking quickly, rewarding high intensity claw flurry play.

And Amy‘s precision shooting becomes even deadlier picking off Divide and Conquer isolated zombies.

Each slayer has specialties thanks to their innate cards that are worth learning. But generally the universal cards make up the bulk of your build.

Sample Skill Setups

While part of mastering Dead Island 2 means constantly refining your skill loadout, here are some templates to get you started:

Extreme Glass Cannon

  • Abilities: Ground Pound, Dash Strike
  • Survivor: Short Fuse
  • Slayer: Heavy Hitter, Skull Skewer, Unrelenting, Glass Cannon
  • Numen: Seismic Stomp

Focused solely on delivering the highest burst potential and chasing frag highlight reels. You explode zombies or they explode you – no in between.

Main Tank Anchor

  • Abilities: Scream, Drop Kick
  • Survivor: Safety First, Rallying Cry
  • Slayer: Clear Sightlines, Volatile
  • Numen: Born Survivor

With max defense and disruption tools, the tank anchors the team by controlling crowds so damage dealers secure kills. Highly team oriented build.

Adaptable Skirmisher

  • Abilities: Ground Pound, Drop Kick, Dash Strike
  • Survivor: Safety First, Rallying Cry
  • Slayer: Clear Sightlines, Serial Killer
  • Numen: Seismic Stomp

Solid balance of offense and defense makes this extremely adaptable without particular specialization – great all round build!

Zombie Eradication 101

  • Abilities: Drop Kick, Scream
  • Survivor: Safety First, Safe Space
  • Slayer: Corpse Bomb, Volatile
  • Numen: Born Survivor

Simple yet effective loadout for beginners prioritizing survival fundamentals – drop kick to get some space then finish off clumps with explosions!

The key is finding a skill synergy matching your playstyle and weapon choice. I‘m continually finetuning experimental builds at max level, so stay tuned for more optimal setups as the Dead Island 2 meta evolves!
